Scared of clowns?

December 13, 2007 6:34am CST
I've never been scared of clowns myself, I actually love them and even more "scary" looking ones I still like. (pennywise.. icp, many more in films) But why don't your children like them? My son is 18months old and is very curious about them but at times he won't go near one. It's just a normal stage but I honestly don't see what's creepy about them. My wife doesn't like them but she just says they "look" intimidating... Have you ever been scared of clowns? ~Joey

I dont know whats intimidating in clowns, but i think i agree with your wife.Maybe its the fact that they got this permanent smile, that one kinda makes you think that they are hiding something or that they are laughing against you. However, i dont know of any kid hat is afraid of clowns. They always adore clowns, they can stay near them like metal to the magnet :)

Many kids are scared of people in masks and especially adults dressed up. It doesn't matter if the costume is scary or benevolent--it is still an adult with face paint on and crazy clothes and that is different and can be scary. You should have seen my youngest react to my friend's daughter in full face paint for Halloween. She was the bride of Frankenstein (her face all white with black around her eyes and her mouth). My youngest (18 months at the time) took one look at her and ran back to me crying and didn't want to go in the house. My friend said even her youngest daughter was afraid of her sister. But the costume wasn't that scary--she just didn't look normal. I'm not "afraid" of clowns but they creep me the heck out. I don't really have any logical reason to feel this way but I do. And I know it started because of a movie (darn evil clown movies). I watched Poltergeist when I was 7 or 8 and the scene where the clown drags the kid under the bed was forever burned into my head. I had nightmares for weeks and hated the people that let me watch it (I was at a neighbors house). I've never had a single clown item since then. Then again, I also refuse to have large dolls in my room because it feels like they are watching you even though I know that isn't true. It's just freaky.

Oh the dolls is something which I can relate to, they don't scare me but at times they do freak me out. My son did something similar, although he just hid himself away from it. Thanks for your great response! :) ~Joey

I have never actually been scared of clowns as a child, they were never funny to me, I hated circuses and would never want to go to one, I never had a clown come to my birthday party, it was the last thing I wanted. However when I saw that film IT by Stephen King, with Stephen King, it was highly sinister and whilst it didn't scare me it more or less depicted clowns as scary rather than funny. To see a bloke dressed in a funny wig, nose and balloon trousers I'd expect the men in white coats to come and collect him LOL!

Lol... Well I don't find them funny either, it's just something which appeals to my nature. I don't think one would scare me either, I can say for sure but

Oh yes, I remember you mentioned that.:P To be honest, I seldom meet clowns. And I seldom go to circus. But clowns can indeed be scary if they don't smile.

No I have never been afraid o clowns. I do know people who are. I then got to thinking about it and some clowns do look scary, specially to a little kid. I read the book "IT" and have never looked at a clown the same way again, hehe.

eww clowns freak me out. I dont know why though, I used to like them and think of them as fun but once i got a clown from the gas station by my house and the head spun around slowly when you turned the crank and it played music. But one night we were playing with the Oujia Board and the head started spinning around really fast and the music was all distorted. I haven't even looked at clown since.

Yeah, that is pretty funny, isn't it? I am not scared of clowns at all and I did enjoy them a lot when I was a little girl. But, I don't really understand others being scared of them at all. I can understand kids being scared of them because of all those make-ups they always have on. That could be a bit scary for a child, I would think.

Well i don't have children but me myself i'm afraid of clowns. Maybe because all of those freaky scary movies and the way they are dressed even if i know the clown personally. It always has something creepy just like dolls. It gives me goosebumps when i see a clown

Hi joey:) I never have liked clowns. Ever since I was a little girl I was always afraid of them. I remember crying every time I came close to them. I would hide behind who ever I was with. When my son was small, he too was scared of them. I'm not sure why, just creepy to me.

When I was a little girl I was always afraid of clowns. Now the only way I would be afraid of a clown would be if It was a doll and It was dark in my room at night and I wake up to see it and It's not mine. That's the only way I would be scared. And if it has some sharp teeth I would be afraid of too! LOL, But a lot of kids are afraid of clowns, they just look plain weird. Maybe kids see them as people who turned white and they're walking around like that making weird noises and telling funny jokes.

I have never been a fan of clowns. I don't think they scare me though. Well, maybe, with a few exceptions such as the clowns in the US government. Now those guys and gals are scary. lol

Maybe cause they just dont know what to think about them.. cause its the first time they have seen someone in makeup and weird clothes like that, its just not normal to them, and they are probably a little confused as to why the person is looking like that i bet! My daughter is scared of santa, cause the beard i guess! I have heard that most kids are scared of him untill they realize that santa gives them presents and candy lol. then they are all good around them. We are taking my daughter to see santa tonight and i bet i will have to sit on his knee with her. LOL

i know when i was at college there was a girl on my course who freaked out at the sight of clowns....one time we set her up and hid a picture of a clown in her work folder, she saw it ran out the room, hit the wall and passed out....was funny but i did feel bad about it afterwards. personally i dont find them that scary, but you know i hate horror movies n stuff, so in that context i wouldnt like them

I never found clowns to be funny at all. With all the horror movies depicting them as "evil" I don't think that helps their case..lol. I was having a sleepover at a friends house. We were in the kitchen making popcorn ( I think I was 8 or 9 ) and there was a window above her sink. Well, long story short a man in a clown mask popped up in the window and scared the dickens out of both of us. There must be something "creepy" about them if so many people have unexplained fears from clowns. I am not really "scared" by them anumore, but they aren't my favorite thing either.
