Why do people do this?

We got some snow today for the second time this season. Here in Pennsylvania snow is not at all uncommon. So why is it that some people still can't figure out to either learn to drive in it or stay off the road.
I know accidents can happen to even the most experienced driver's but there were so many accidents and stuck vehicles coming across the scanner today. Several of them involving 2-3 vehicles all winding up stuck in the same spot together, a couple jack knifed tractor trailers, and a bunch of vehicles that simply slid off the road.
Schools were all closed down. It was obviously piling up fast so why did all these people think they HAD to go out in it?! If you live where it snows, do people do that kind of thing there too, like some sort of universal stupidity? LOL

We don't have snow here but, we have really bad storms. It always seems like there are more cars out there during a storm than there is on a sunny day. It's like everyone has to leave their nice safe home and go out and see if they can weather the storm. There are always so many accidents!

Maybe it's some kind of ego boost thing...like if they make it back they'll be super heroes and if they get stuck they'll have a great story to tell.

ROFLMFAO omg I dont even drive and I can relate! I live in Western NY so snow is definately something ppl in this area should be familiar with, including how to drive in it :-/ Blows my mind how a little snow makes ones driving skills go completely out the window...Mind you I'm from Canada and we get nailed with rotten winter weather all the time so I'm use to ppl REALLY knowing how to handle it but now I live not far from Buffalo and they get nailed all the time too so I dont understand how it is so many ppl can't handle the winter weather LOL...

It's like some people still think it's a novelty..."Let's go drive stupid and see if we can get stuck!" Yeah, sounds like fun! *eyes rolling* LOL

I also don't know why people drives during the snow time. I think people should stay inside so as that accidents are not made or they are not stuck in between the road. It is better to stay at home than to stuck in the road. I think may be people might be going out to buy somethings or to visit their friends or families houses. I also think it would be nice to spend time at their home than to be in snow and have accidents sliding off the road or hitting another vehicle in snow.

It took 3 of us saying "NO" to keep my stepson home tonight. He was just sure he had to go out. I had to call his dad at work so he could tell the kid the roads weren't fit for driving unless it was absolutely necessary. Those are the kind of people I have a problem with.

These things happen because people do not think before they take action. Honestly a lot of people are like well I drive in this kind of weather all the time, I can handle it today. Well today may be the day that they don't think they need to pay attention at all times.
I'm telling you some people just don't use their brains!!

I think most of people would like to stay at home during this kind of awful weather, but if they need work, go to hospital or have some emergent issues, they must go out even the weather is bad. But I think if their speed slow down and pay more attention during their driving, there would be no problem. LOL

It would definitely be safer if they drove slower if they really HAD to go out!

The world is full of ignorant people!! If the schools are closed then they are obviously telling you to stay off the roads. Stay home and stay safe! Happy Holidays to you!

I have experienced that myself not with snow but with rain. In Florida, we have the same problem. If it rains, you can expect a hundred people on the roads throughout have slid off the roads, rear ended someone or something else. It really does irritate me to no end! Because of Florida's coastal location when I lived there we were prone to torrential downpours during hurricane season, instead of staying out of the rain, they decide to speed through it and then taht causes accidents. If you can't see 15 feet in front of you the chances of you hitting something are pretty high, yet they speed regardless or are careless with their driving. Ugh!

I've only lived in PA for 2 1/2 years, this is my third winter here, and I've wondered the same thing, why drive in it unless it is an absolute emergency situation? It's not like it sneaks up on you, it's on the radio, tv, weather channels, do people actually not watch or listen? You know it's coming, tomorrow afternoon or evening, ok fine, go to the store, go rent movies, or run errands today! What gets me the most is those people do not even consider that other people (police, firemen, emt's) are putting their own life in harms way by having to rescue their butts! I for one, don't drive in snow, I moved here from the South!

LOL I know! I mean it's not like snow storms pop out of nowhere!
"What gets me the most is those people do not even consider that other people (police, firemen, emt's) are putting their own life in harms way by having to rescue their butts!" Exactly! That's the worst part of it all!
I was born and raised here and i still try to not go out in it.

Though we haven't had any snow here yet where I live. This happens even when it rains. It is like people forget how to drive when the road is wet or with snow. I would assume that most people were probably going to work, since I am sure they don't call work places off when it snows. But that is the norm with accidents with rain or snow.

Yeah people act stupid like that here too. I live in west virginia and its like they dont know how to drive in it. Even though we usually get a lot of snow at least once during the winter. About 2 weeks ago we got probably a couple inches of snow. We had to go out and had not one problem. But these other people...it was basically the same thing you said. There was people flying around turns and then putting their cars in the ditch. People that drive like that should just stay off the roads. They shouldnt put theirself and others in danger by driving like that.

No they shouldn't be putting others at risk. It's one thing if a person wants to be stupid and risk their own lives but what about the other people on the roads and the rescue workers that are going to have to come out to help them. Around here it's pretty much all volunteer rescue crews so these people have to go out in their personal vehicles to get people out of ditches and what not.

My husband has to drive in it because of his job, but he is a good driver in snow and his theory here in Ohio is that, the first few snowfalls we have, the people drive really slow, (even when the roads are dry) and then after they are used to it, then they drive faster, but they don't drive in the snow itself correctly.
Like here is a great example, even I know this: there is a little snow on the roads, you approach a somewhat big hill, (probably very tiny hill considering you are in Pa), and as they are going uphill, they start braking.. I couldn't believe when he told me that is what happened our first snowfall this year..lol

LOL well I'm sure we don't have any "real mountains" but you'd be surprised the kind of hills we do have...either way braking going up a hill seems stupid...although braking going down an icy hill isn't too smart either lol

Well I have been to Pa a few times, so your hills are practically mountains to me, lol We are expecting 6-8 inches of snow today and my husband had to go into work. He didn't have time to tell me any crazy drivers stories yet, but I am very positive I will get an earful when he gets home..:)

Oh yeah this is a big thing here in Rhode Island, the state is so small and we have people who think super driver because I came from Rhode Island and the accident rate rivals states twice or size.

I don't go out. I stay at home. Period. I hate driving on snow. I know if I go slow enough and take my time, I'll get to where I need to go, but everyone else is the problem. They don't know how to drive or they are the ones blazing down the road doing 50 on a sheet of ice. Later on, a few miles down the road, they are also the one scratching their head as they look at their truck which is upside down in a ditch. Bet they are wondering why they're upside down.
I stay at home. The weather guys here are pretty good about predicting it and if there is a slight hint of snow, I got to Wal-Mart and stock up on canned food, cat and dog food and stop by the feed store and pick up horse food. I don't leave unless it's a medical emergency and I have yet to have one of those come up.

LOL I feel like such an airhead..it took 718 postd for me to figure out who you were! If you hadn't mention horse food I bet I still wouldn't have put it together and now it seems so obvious!
I stay home too. If I need something I plan ahead and get it before things start. Last Sunday I did get caught out in the ice because I didn't want to miss out on something and regretted it later. I made it home by driving really slow but I was the one in the ditch/creek in our driveway with everyone else scratching their heads trying to figure out how I did it....It was quite easy actually. I got stuck coming up the hill, put the car in park and got myself unbuckled so I could grab the baby and climb out the passenger door since the driver's door handle broke. I was standing in my seat when the car decided it didn't want to stay put. After banging my knee trying to get back under the steering wheel and getting it stuck in reverse because the shifter is broken, the car landed in the creek.

I really don't have a good answer to your question, but I can totally relate. I used to live down south (Texas) and we'd get a good snow every 4-5 years, perhaps. Not only did a snowfall seem to bring out every idiot under the sun, they all seemed to want to drive around in it. In ADDITION to which, it also seemed like snow on the ground somehow offered them license to ignore all traffic signs... as a result of which there were often MORE accidents as a result of "dumb behavior," than there were as a result of those who genuinely lost control of their vehicles. Go figure!
