Does it take fossil fuels to make plastic?

It seems like I remember hearing that years ago. And we really use a lot of plastic! I use microwave bowls and those inexpensive ziploc storage bowls all of the time. And what about baggies for sandwiches? or stuff we throw into the freezer? And look at all of the plastic bottles. Almost every product we buy in the store nowadays comes in plastic from water to mayonnaise. I guess if we want to "go green" we should go back to using glass?

Another friend posted about going back to storing things in glass jars, and I threw out a lot of my older plastic. It sure gave me more cupboard space. I like the idea. I keep hearing that even if not heated, plastic leaches harmful chemicals into those things that are stored in it. I do not know. I know that I reuse as much plastic as I can. If you are using more of the storage bowls, you are using less of the baggies and plastic wrap, so I guess that is better. We are pretty sold on a convenience lifestyle.

I reuse as much plastic as I can and I don't use anymore plastic than I have to. If I use plastic storage bags I wash them and reuse them, just as I reuse almost everything else. I take cloth bags with me to the grocery store so I do not get the little plastic bags. I reuse glass jars and and plastic cartons that cottage cheese comes in, etc. And I recycle everything I can.

Well if we went back to glass, we would burn more gas due to the additional weight of transporting all of the products. We have got to recycle. Stop using disposable containers so much, forget sandwich bags, get a plastic container and use that for sandwiches. Buy a lunch box. Instead of those 20 oz bottles of water, buy a water cooler and get those 5 gallon jugs, that you return and are reused. We have to think more

It does take fossil fuels to make plastic. To go green you can use only glass, recyclable paper or aluminum foil (its recyclable) storage items.

Yes. It takes oil and natural gas to make plastic and glass. So many products are oil based now. Going green might require you to hollow out an old fallen log to use for holding liquids...lol

We do use a lot of plastic in our everyday living. Things we take for granted even. But even to produce glass, I would think it would take some type of fossil fuel to make it. Not sure, but that's what I think.

Most plastics have traditionally been made out of the by products of fossil fuels. They have now developed a few ways to make plastic out of other items that are biodegradable, and thus not as bad for the environment. And they are figuring out ways to recycle the old plastics so they don't end up so much in land fills. Now if we would only take those plastics in to recycle.

I think so that fossil fuels are used to make plastic and other stuff.fossil fuels are decomposed and are transmitted into various items.i have heard so.

But is glass any better?? I think people should recycle!! Glass takes 1 million years to degrade in the landfill. Plastic is NEVER. So neither are really better, but our area recycles plastic, so I choose that over glass. Too bad most people just don't care.
