I had someone recommend helium.com to me. Can anyone talk about the site? Are there other places like that out there? Which is best and why?

I write in Helium but I'm fairly new there and still trying to get the feel of the site.
However, I also write in Associated Content, and Hub Pages, as well as other smaller sites. AC is a very good one. I enjoy working in there, even though I can't receive offers, because I'm in England. I like their presentation, and I have quite a few reads, which pays me a little pin money. Hub Pages is good too, but the rewards programme is different. I have accumulated forty eight fans and rising, in there, and received lots of comments on my work.
I hope this helps you. Brightest Blessings.

As a professional freelance writer, I am a huge fan of Helum. I have been with Helium for over a year, and while it has had its growing pains, management continues to improve the site. Money can be made if one is diligent and writes many articles that rank in the top 50 percentile.
Some writers have confused Helium with a blogger site; it is not. Those "writers" don't do well on Helium.
As to Associated Content, I began writing there, too, but found out too late that AC does not pay a writer who lives outside of the United States.
Constant Content is an excellent site; the pay is good, the site is easy to use (a bit strict but that ensures consistency in grammar), and the site pays you regardless of where you live.
But back to Helium -- this site is a great place for a professional writer to keep their writing muscle exercised, and for a beginner to learn the ropes. The support, the shared knowledge, the contests, and the pay (albeit very small at first) are all legit.
I am a Site Steward for both the Helium Photography and the Camera Channel; if you have further questions, visit my About Me page, and send me a note. I answer all my emails.

I write at Gather, which is more of social site, and it is fun. I am really pumped, I put an article on Helium. I have a friend who is mentoring me, and then another friend had suggested it. I can see some earning potential through the Marketplace area. I just wish I had more time, because there are some areas I would like to write to. Others say that they do not make much money on there, but I like what I did with my first article.

I like what you did with your first article too! Helium is a good environment for people who like to have a little nudge. At first I thought I'd dislike the whole competitiveness and rating bit, but there is a support structure inherent in it too. Again, congratulations!

I dont have anything against helium, and i do write for them once in a while. I have to be honest though I really do prefer Associated content. The reson for this is because AC pays you up front for an article. I usually get around $5 per article, and you also get a commision based on how popular your article actually is. i know thought that during the summer months they were pying a lot of money and accepting a lot of articles while now it is a little harder to get published. You should also check out constant content. i have not written for them but have heard good things.

Getting five dollars out of AC isn't a good alternative to getting lifetime income from Helium. I earn 4-500 dollars every single month and my articles will earn for ever. AC can keep their five dollars. I am worth more than that ! LOL

I think Helium is a terrific site, along with Triond, and Associated Content. Each of these three shines in a different way and so it is just a personal choice which is best, but in my opinion Associated Content is a bit more complicated to use and therefore is probably not the best one to start with although overall it may be the best one of its kind for experienced users. Helium is more community-based, and Triond is better for people who prefer to work on their own. My own first preference is for Triond, principally because they allow us to delete and/or rewrite an article if we look back and find we have made mistakes or just want to remove it for whatever reason.
In my experience the earnings are roughly the same for each of these 3 sites. If it is important to you to illustrate your articles with your own photos, then AC is the place to be.

Hi estherlou
I guess everyone's experience of Helium is different. Personally, I wouldn't recommend Helium to anyone as I don't think it's the most productive way to make money from your writing. The thing is when you're with one program, you sometimes tend to think it's the ONLY way you can earn an online income. And that is so not true.
There are a lot of people/sites out there looking for writers, that pay more than Helium does. Try freelancewriting.com, sift through craigslist.com, check out jobs.problogger.net, and visit the 'Content Creation' section of DigitalPoint forums (forums.digitalpoint.com).
These are just a few sites. There are more out there. But Helium, I'm afraid, isn't one of them (in my opinion).
take care and good luck...

no it is not, I joined and got i cent for my article, I never went back again,
if you want to exploit yourself then go there.
I research and I write articles for websites and I get anywhere from 4.00 to 16.50 per article for research and my own stories sell from 50.00 to 300.00 a piece
