For the first time in ages I am happy, I have conquered my Winter Blues by going for long walks in the countryside, and going out on the pull every fortnight, however after visiting my doctor today he has prescribed me with anti-depressant called citalopram 1 a day 10mg!
Why? Well he seems to think that the problems I have been having like
constantly yawning
constantly wanting to go to the toilet
Feeling lethargic
Is to do with depression and anxiety! I thought I was over the worst, I am getting long term counseling soon and I feel I'm through the worst of it!
Do you think the doctor is right prescribing me antidepressants, even tho I feel much better? I am in two minds whether to take them or not. It's true I am constantly tired, lethargic and sluggish and also constantly need to pee
I've had my thyroid checked out it's clear, diabetes is clear, iron is ok, everything is fine.
I thought I was over the worst as well
What would you do? Take the antidepressants, as you know I've always been anti anti-depressants but it seems anxiety is still playing a big part in my struggling to beat depression

Sometimes the side effects only last for the first month or 2 of taking a new medication. If you can, hold out and see if the benefits of the meds outweigh any drawbacks. Getting out and exercising, I think, helps tremendously. I have to do some type of exercise every day or I feel bad physically and mentally.

Hi Wolfie I can not see what harm it would be if you tried them and if they work great and if they do not, well now you know, I was on several anti depressants and none of the worked on me but I was put on anti psychotics and they work like a charm and the amount I am taking is very small, I was given antidepressents for years and years and all to no avail, but the anti psychotics are like a total different thing I am very happy, not overly so just happy and that is some thing I haven't been for years. I like you was real Leary about the anti psychotics as it seems to tell every one that I am psychotic, and if that is the case I do not care it works and it is just a medication. and I for one am darn grateful my doctor thought of it for me.

Thank you dear friend, as usual wonderful advice and I will start taking them if they don't work I will go back and find something that does, I have come this far in conquering depression I want to nip it in the bud, trouble is people with thyroid problems are more prone to depression.

i am right with you. i was prescribed anti depressants, for just about the same reasons, other then needing to pee. i dont know about my thyroid yet.
i agree if you feel better its weird that your doc did prescribe you with something. i think a lot of doctors are to quick to give a person pills to "help" get rid of something that could be helped with natural things.
if you are REALLY against it then i would just say keep up with what you are doing.. but i you think they could help try them for a month or so, and see if it does help you. i never realized how different depression and anxiety is.

I don't see the harm in taking the anti-depressant for a short time, wolfie. I am not familiar with that particular one, but you should trust your doctor -unless you find reason to think this is the wrong course for you. Carefully gauge your body's reaction when you begin taking the anti-depressant. They say it usually takes about a week before they are really effective, and if you feel OK with taking them for a time it should be just fine. Maybe once you begin your counseling you won't need them at all anymore. Good luck!

I am hoping the counseling will be sometime soon, plus I have that anger management course in April which won't be long, so I will take them and together hopefully the combination of the therapies will get me right back to where I was the bright happy wolfie x

No one can tell you what to do, we can only give our personal opinions, as well as experiences. So, on that note, here is mine....
I am currently on an anti-depressant. I was prescribed it because I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder. I started out as a normal healthy young woman and due to stress, I became a mess one winter. I had a two week long panic episode, where I was not sleeping, felt panicy and like you, made frequent visits to the bathroom.
When they first wanted to put me on these pills, I was so against them. I was always told that pills like these messed a person up when they started taking them but at that point I needed something. So, I decided to go for it. It's been about 5 or more years and I am still on them. They help me stay calm and happy. Yes, I have my bad days but for the most part they really do help me.
However, if you are feeling good and feel like you can cope without them and you feel like you don't need them, then maybe you should consider just talking to someone. That helps too. Keeping a journal helps, as well as staying healthy, eating good and getting the proper amounts of sleep. Regular excercise is important as well.
However, before I go I just want to say that there is nothing wrong with taking these pills if they help you to feel better. It is a proven medical fact that there are chemicals in the brain that sometimes get out of wack and these pills help to get them back on tract. One thing I have learned is that there are more people than you think suffering with this and who take anti-depressants. Sadly, there are probably more people that do, rather than don't. So, don't feel there is something wrong with you if you do decide to take them....

Well.. I can't say what might be best for someone else.. but I always try to avoid medications, when I can.. Especially all those long term ones.. I truly believe there are many natural remedies for many things.. exercise and fresh air being two of the top ones.. along with a good solid natural diet of the more veg and fruits the better, peanuts.. oatmeal.. and good water and juices maybe. But especially the exercise and fresh air.
- I used to suffer from depression years ago, and the help I got was well, not from people.. but from the Lord who put a face or description to my long drawn out mourning (as I learned it was) and he also healed me of many hurts received early in life.. and I also learned I had to break down and overcome some habits in my thinking, so I began the habit of replacing all negative thoughts with a positive one, after imagining a big X over the negative one. And that's how I trained myself to think positive, as the bible says we can, and have every reason to.. Even if you're not inclined to the spiritual aspect, retraining the thoughts (burning new well worn neural pathways) works very good.
- good luck! and blessings..!

Wolfie I don't know why Doctors are so fast in handing out Anti depressants like that
I am on high ones yes but I fought against them but then I had no choice as my whole Life fell around me after 40 years (will not go into details) and to this Day I will not accept the Illness, I have tried coming of them with the permission and work of my previous Doctor who was very good, but she had to put me back on them after a 4 months as I was not able to cope
What you are explaining is actually your Body relaxing from all that you have been through and the relief that it is over
Do you think you need them Sweetie? If you think you do then go on them for a bit but if you feel strong enough to deal with it then don't

My main concern is that they hamper the results when I go for my urodynamics in 6-8 weeks, I guess I worry too much, I have got this far without them. I might be causing myself more problems if I do take them and it's a slippery slope. I am seeing another GP on Tuesday, although from the Same practice to see if she is any different, I just wish I could find a doctor with compassion who will listen to me and understand me. The only time I had a wonderful doctor was over in Wickford he was a wonderful man and even agreed to see me out of his catchment area until my ex ruined that for me! He was soooooooooo caring and now all I get are doctors who treat me like a number and I'd get more help from the local Tom Cat xxxxx

Have you tried any homeopathic remedies that you may be more apt to using? It's truly up to you ... Only you can make this decision no one else. What do you feel is right for you ? I can only say that you will know what is best for you.

I have been on antidepressants with the advice from my doctor. She gave me a prescription for them and I only took them for about a month and went off of them because they just upset my stomach and gave me diareah. when I told her about it she just told me to keep taking them and I would, in time, start to get over the side effects. So I tried for another month and I couldn't take the nasaus feeling anymore and went off of them. the side effects were worse than the depression. I was always sick on them. She wouldn't give me a lowere dose because then they wouldn't help me for my depression. If you don't feel depressed why take them at all? I certainly wouldn't. your body can also come dependant on them and then you don't feel good after you go off of them. Or does your doctor want you to stay on them long term? I don't know that they would help your being tired but then again, I'm not a doctor so I can't say for sure. Maybe you just need some vitamins.

hi,don't worry.calm down.in my opinion, you do not need to count on the pills.
trust yourself and you are the best.
But on the other hand, nowthat you've realized what your confronting, try your best to restrain the impulse intendedly, such as yawn or other things.

Seratonin production is my problem we feel. Winter sucks big time for me. I know sunshine really does lift me up. You sound like you think you done well but the doctor doesn't. Did you argue this out with him at all? Was you on meds anyway? Go back to the doctor. Know the doctors plan, how long for, expectations and all. There should be a means to an end with this if you normally manage without meds. I mean, I go med free then winter comes. This year I had a winter break in the sun and got away with not having a deppression noteworthy of visiting the doctor but we have had frost and severe cold for 2 months now and I feel it's time to go the doctor and get back on the meds... I know we don't want pills but don't beat yourself up over them, just ensure you understand the doctors goal and that you meet him on this by discussion.. Best of luck as I know how you feel over winter.

I take an antidepressant because my accident messed up that part of my brain, and when I don't take them I'm unbearable. LOL In your case, I would take them only when I felt the need to. If you feel that you are getting better with the anxiety and depression then good for you. If you feel like a day is unbearable and you don't know how you're going to deal with it, then take the antidepressant. That's my advise: take it when you feel the need. I don't know what else to tell ya.

Hello dear wolfie. I am glad that you are now feeling much better and have been through the worst of it. I think that I would not take any pills prescribed by the doctor for too long, but one more week to help solidate the good case. I do not think that it is a good idea to always take the pills as an aid if you are really feeling much better from it. Take care and stay healthy, my dear wolfie.

It sounds like he should be giving you anti-anxiety pills instead of anti-depressants. There is a difference. :-)
