Fresh fruits, veggies, and herbs have a much better flavor than either canned or frozen. They are also healthier and better for you. They do take a bit longer to prepare, though. More and more people use canned or frozen varieties becuase they are so much easier and faster to prepare. I try to use fresh ingredients whenever possible - or even use some that I have canned myself out of my garden. We live in the country and usually have a very large garden, so I am able to grow a lot of my own produce, and even sometimes give some to family and friends, or sell the extra. Do you use fresh fruits and veggies instead of the frozen or canned alternatives?

We use fresh as much as possible. There are some times of year when the fresh ones are insanely priced though, so I also use quite a few frozen fruits and vegetables through the winter. The rest of the year, it's pretty rare for me to use anything canned.

I'm working toward that. Gardening is still new to me, but I dried a lot of my tomatoes and herbs and have been using those. We have frozen mulberries and black raspberries. I also have a lot of chopped and frozen hot peppers from my little container garden last summer. This summer I want to add a couple more things - squash will be one, not sure on the 2nd yet.

Yes for the most part fresh veggies and fruit are fairly inexpensive here too. Broccoli and cauliflower can get a little pricey sometimes, but it is usually still cheaper than the frozen varieties. We try to use fresh as much as possible. There are a lot less preservatives that way!

I always use fresh vegetables with the exeption of peas corn and kidney beans. Those I buy frozen or in cans. It is true that fresh ingredients are sometimes more expensive but I plan my meals around the specials in the grocery store. Sometimes cauliflower is .99 a head instead of 2.49. Well that week I will have cauliflower in different dishes, such as stir fry and as a veggie. When I ived in a house I always grew a small garden. Not enough to freeze stuff but enough to pick a handful of asparagus and steam it up or pad out in my pj's and pick a tomato for my breakfast. I think some people realize what they are missing. I live in a big city now and one community group has organized a day in a park each week where people who grow stuff can come and set up a stall and sell their excess produce.(That is only possible in the summer hough)
In the summer there is also a farmer's market in the parking lot of one of the big shopping centres selling local produce. This is so good for the environment. Here the average journey for fruits and veggies is 1500 miles. Think of all the fuel costs that are saved if people buy locally.

It is wonderful to be able to have your own garden! I love it. We grow some of our own fruits, the majority of our vegetables, and tons of herbs. I also have milk goats and even make my own cheese and soaps. I think it is much healthier for us than store bought products that are full of preservatives and who knows what else.

I agree with you completely, but you would be surprised how many people don't use them - at least in our area. I had a large amount of extra herbs last summer and tried to sell them at our local farmer's market - but most people did not even know how to use them in cooking, let alone what they were! I always try to have enough out of our garden to put up for the winter months.

There are only a couple things I use canned...beans (kidney, pinto, garbanzo) and tomatoes. I almost always prefer fresh...it's better tasting and healthier. I do occasionally like to buy frozen vegetable mixes for stir fry, stew or casseroles because there's no prep work needed. If there's a really good deal on fruits or veggies I sometimes buy a lot and then freeze.

Yes, I will also use canned beans on occasion for some things. I will also used canned tomatoes alot, but I try to can my own and use them instead of store bought. It is easier to control the amount of salt in them, and you know how fresh they are. Other than that I much prefer to use fresh veggies and fruits.

I definitely prefer fresh and use them as much as I can, but will use frozen too.
There are a few things I'll do from a can (green beans, asparagus, corn, kidney beans for chili), but there are some that I will never eat from a can (carrots - can't stand them from a can, and potatoes).

I will use the canned beans, and occasionally the canned chili for chili dogs, etc. But other than that tomatoes are about the only other thing I will use canned. I will use frozen corn and green beans, but would rather use fresh. When I fix asparagus I use fresh as well instead of canned. They just plain taste better and have less preservatives too.

Of course I do. The processed or frozen foods never taste as good as fresh.

Lately I have been using fresh fruits and vegetables because i have come across a few programs in my community that allows me to purchase produce for cheaper then in the grocery store. As well as a program that gives me FREE produce and milk and bread while i'm pregnant and have a child under the age of two! So now i can afford to eat better!! i dont mind the extra prep time, it tastes so much better!! ;)

In my opinion fresh is always best. Not only are they good to eat, but they are fun to grow. Even my grandkids love to grow and eat fresh fruits and veggies. They are more flavorful and have a better color and texture when fresh and have more nutritional value and fiber.

I like to use fresh and organic is great too! The frozen fruit and vegetables are considered healthy enough, compared to the alternatives, like fast food! The nutritionists tell the teachers that it is almost just as good as fresh! People who grow their own food need to do something with the extra food, so they can make it through the winter!

Yes, i prefer the fresh veg, fruits, and herbs.
Because the taste is better than the preserved one.
The minerals and vitamins is remained the same...
More healthy for digestion system and its contain "pure" water.

I agree with you totally! But too many people are using frozen or canned veggies now days simply because it is faster, easier, and more convienent. We tried to sell some of our extra herbs at a local farmer's market last summer, and I could not believe the number of people who had no idea what they were or how to use them in cooking! It is a shame really. We usually try to grow enough so that we can also put up some for the winter months.

Hello there, like many people, we try to live as healthy as we can. Every weekend, we will go to the supermarket once to buy the fresh veggies and fruits. Among them, apples; bananas; broccoli; carrots; lettuce and so on are our popular weekly must have items. We only use certain items packed with canned and limited frozen food since the former one has been processed with preservative and other ingredients while the latter one is also prepared with less nutrition.

Of course the fresh ones are most attractive, especially when we are able to grow our own, but it is good that the process of flash freezing has gotten much better than in the olden days and so the quality of some frozen produce is quite high. I use mostly fresh, some frozen and very seldom anything from a can.
The one exception is one brand of pineapple and pears that we get in cans or jars from a dollar store near our home--dunno what they do but their fruit is just so delicious.

I definitely love fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs! I live in a place where fresh vegetables and fruits are really abundant. However, when there is a need for certain fruits or vegetables or even herbs but are not available, I do used canned alternatives. But I would really prefer more of the fresh ones because they are healthier.

I think fresh fruits and vegetables are better than frozen or canned foods.fresh fruits and vegetables have minerals and vitamins in them.whereas canned food contains preservatives .canned food does not give health to the body as fresh fruits and vegetables do.

I also love to use fresh herbs and veggies as much as possible. I live near the country and buy from local farmers and it is so good to have fresh things. I don't like the canned veggies and some of the ready made herbs are not that great most have lost all their flavor and scent. Its nice to see someone who also likes the fresh taste of farm grade veggies versus store bought pestiside ridden ones
