Did you have an epidural during labor?

I chose to have an epidural during labor. It made childbirth a piece of cake. I couldn't feel a thing. Was anyone out there brave enough to go without an epidural? How bad was it?

I had one. I was sitting there onthe table in the birthing room and they had to break my water for me. Oh boy did the pain start after that. I heard a lady screaming so loud in another room. The nurse told that lady did not want an epidural. I asked How quick I could get mine LOL :)

I am pregnant now and have been undecided, but after reading everyone's experience, I think I will have one now.

With my first daughter, I didnt have anything. She came to quickly, and I was in early labor so they were trying to stop me instead. My second daughter I had something given to me in my IV. I dont remember the name though. I almost had an epidural, but while I sat up to get it, she started crowning, so nothing else with her. And finally my son... I didnt have anything with him. My water broke and within 15 minutes I was holding him. I wish they had all been like that:) I slept through the night with my comtractions. It was the best Labor ever! All the others, VERY Painful. But I wouldnt trade it for anything.

The Goods - What every man should remember
yeah 4 times. I had my 1st one at 17 was told by the Dr. I was in labor at an appt. had her 56 minutes after getting to the hospital. No meds at all. No pains either. Sat up in bed and had Burger King right after they took her to the nursery, 2nd at 20, water broke that time, born exactly 3 years apart to the day and minute. Only difference 2nd was born in Okinawa so it was technically a day later. No meds, No pain, they tried to send me home. Not!! 3rd got to the hospital just in time was naturally numb from the waist down. Doctor didn't deliver her. Nurse did. 4th Yeah a boy. Thank God for Dr. appts. Yep doc didn't make it time for him either. He decided it would be a while and went home for dinner. But I still had to pay every one of the Drs. Lots of exercise and stretching is what I chalk it up to. Would have had more but it got to expensive.

I didn't. I didn't want to hae pain killers at all but in the ned I had one pethidine shot. My mum and my sister were running around screaming someone get her something lol, but I felt good. It didnt hurt all that much. The contractions do, but you would have felt them anyway before you had the epidural yeah? Once you start pushing you dont notice the pain (and trust me I have a low pain tolerance threshold lol so I am not being brave!) Don't epidurals prolong labour?

Yes, epidurals prolong labor! Also lead to other interventions which are known to snowball into an emergency c-section.

Never! I gave birth at home three times without any pain meds. Labor hurts, sure, but it is with the purpose of holding your darlin baby in your arms in the end! I chose to FEEL everything, and I think the physical sensations of birthing--helped make me the loving mother I am.

My mom gave birth at home...ALONE!!! This was a long time ago but I can't imagine the pain....Everyone keeps asking me if I'm gonna get the epidural...I'm not sure yet! It all depends on how I feel when I'm going through labor! I'm scared though My mom say's you can't compare the pain to anything else! And I totally take her word on that one she had 6 kids all through natural birth without any meds!

I have given borth four times: I did it three times without an epidural, and then one time with an epidural. With the epidural, the pain was gone, but the urge to push was feeble and impaired, and so the pushing stage took longer.

I had an epidural with my first child. I didn't even know when I was having a contraction! They had to tell me and tell me when to push! LOL. I didn't have anything at all with my 2nd one though. I had been in and out of labor for 2 weeks and had had all sorts of medication to try to delay delivery. They wouldn't let me have anything for pain, including an epidural. It was BAD!!!!

I have to laugh, because I think you were braver than me. One of my main reasons for wanting a natural birth, is that I'm terrified of needles. I couldn't imagine myself ever being in enough pain to REQUEST one. As it turned out, I was pretty lucky and my labors went well. I didn't really feel much pain with contractions, just pressure.

I have three kids. For my first I had back labor and got the epideral right away and everything was fine. For the second I stayed home for 12 hours of labor, went to the hospital, got the epideral because my husband couldn't stand to see me in pain, it didn't work and it hurt like you wouldn't believe, but I only had to push for 15 minutes compared to almost two hours for my first. I almost had my third at home, had to go to the hospital in a ambulance with a driver who kept telling "don't push! don't push!" I was thinking "are you f***ing kidding me?". I had him in the hallway on the ambulance stretcher with maybe 2 minutes of pushing. If I ever have another I will not have a epideral because you feel great afterwards when you don't. I was up and walking the halls very quickly after my last two. No stitches or cramps can compare after what you go thru naturally.

wolfe - wolfe
I started my labor without an epi. After 15 hours and back labor starting, I decided to get it. The pain from the contractions was very intense because it was in my back.

I gave in & asked for an epidural when I was in labor w/ my son. I feel I truly needed it - I had gotten about 2 hors of sleep in the past 3 days & I was so uncomfortable, it made it so I could relax & sleep before all that pushing. I didn't want an epidual when I went into labor w/ my daughter - but they had to do an emergency c-section & had to give me one. Unfortuately it had only partialy taken effect when they started & I felt that first "slice" of the knife. But after that it was all pulling & tugging.
