There have been talks about ratatouille, the movie, so I thought I would ask about the dish itself!:-) So, do you like ratatouille? Do you make it yourself? How do you like it, hot or cold? What combination you like? Do you try variations? What variation you like the most?

I haven't tried that.I gathered that it is a French dish and the word Ratatouille comes from "touiller," which means to toss food. Ratatouille originated in the area around present day Nice. It was originally a poor farmer's dish, prepared in the summer with fresh summer vegetables. How does it taste?Do you like it?

Hello balasri, It's nice of you to look it up!:-) and yes 'touiller' means toss or stir up. It tastes great, balasri, and I do like it very much. In fact one can customize it according to one's taste. I have my own way of making it, so I'll try to find a good/standard recipe and will paste the link here. All of its ingredients are available in India. Thank you for your participation!:-)

Hello balasri, I think following is a good source. http://www.beyond.fr/food/ratatouille.html I especially liked how they have given three methods and commented on them too. I, personally, add very little amount of powdered ginger and coriander too, when seasoning! Once you make it, you will know how to play around to make it best for your taste. Best of luck!:-)

Kamran, I saw this discussion in my email a few days ago, at the time it made me laugh at a horrible memory I have. First let me say my grand daughter Emily loves the movie. I have not sat down and watch the entire thing from beginning to end but only caught bits a pieces of it. It looks cute. Now to my memory. LMAO. I simply adore all of the vegtables that make up this dish. When I was a young bride, my husband took me to an upscale restaurant that served this dish as a side for a French stewed beef concoction... It was sooo very good. Not long after that I spent a few hours hunting down the recipe and tried to cook it at home... OMG Kamran let me tell you, what I ended up with was some sort of vegetable mush that was completely inedible. Money was so tight, and I had just wasted nearly a weeks worth of vegetables on this dinner. RotfLMAO that was not my only flub in those days.. as I had many many dinner catastrophes. I have not ever tried that one again. However I do know how to cook my vegetables now with tenderness.

Go ahead and Laugh Sugar... I laugh now too. I was so young and so eager to please my handsome new husband back then. I once made some fried chicken, although pretty on the outside, when he took a bite it was raw down by the bone. I cried over that meal. Rotflmao..... I mean a country girl should be able to fry up a platter of fried chicken right? Oh it was bad..... All my poor mother could do is shake her head and laugh at me. We are all young and naive at one point. LMAO

Sorry Angel, now that I am out of fit of laughter, and hence able to think properly, I see that I was a little insensitive there and did not comment appropriately. It is all too evident that love makes us do things that we aren’t particularly apt to do, just so we could show our love and impress the loved one, it’s natural. My dear wife never had to cook as such; she was very rich and is the most beloved child of her parents. Moreover her medical studies made her stay in another city rather than her native without the possibility to properly cook. But, she did learn to cook few things without being expert at any. Why I am telling you all this is because I want to tell you what a husband really admires in that kind of situation. When she cooked something, I used to admire her (I am talking in past tense as we aren’t living together for some time now). And, when she used to say that I am praising just to keep her heart, I used to tell her that it’s not just the taste of food that matters… to me all the love and care behind it makes it unique and all the more tasteful than any expert cook’s cooked food. I am really serious about my belief of added taste to food because of love behind it! It doesn’t mean that she didn’t cook well; she did, and became more and more expert with time. So, I can bet that even if you weren’t able to cook something very expertly, your husband would have admired the related things, specifically, all the love for him behind your cooking. Have my words on it!:-)

I love ratatouille. My mom and I both usually make it without the eggplant but I like it both ways. It's so yummy with homemade bread dipped in it. I love anything veggy. I like it hot, slightly warm or room temperature but not cold/straight from the fridge.

Hello brimia, I was starting to wonder if someone really knows about what ratatouille is, let alone make it!:-P I am glad you responded to share how you like it!:-) I don’t particularly like eggplant separately either but in ratatouille, it’s acceptable, or in mixture in any dish. Yes, homemade bread would be great with it. I like it with rice too and mostly I take it plain (without any combination). As much as I like it hot, I can’t stand it cold, LOL! I just feel like vomiting if I continue to eat it cold! But hot is, well…yummy! I sometimes add a bit of my own spices and butter too, it just makes it Great! Thanks for sharing, brimia!:-)

Hello Sissygrl!:-) You made me interested in the other movie, Sissygrl, do come back to share if/when you recollect the name! Ratatouille is a vegetable stew made from eggplant, peppers, zucchini, onions, lots of tomatoes and seasoned with garlic and other herbs!

I saw the movie and I like it very much though I didn't get to concentrate much of it since I was also doing something else while watching. My children loved the movie too and have watched it more than once. For the his dish, I can't actually make something out of it. I thought ratatouille refers to the rat who is actually the chef.

Movie was really fun and great, cdparazo! I didn’t see it full myself. It’s obvious that majority of children would have liked it and yes it’s worth seeing twice!:-) As for the dish, it is a vegetable stew made from eggplant, peppers, zucchini, onions, lot of tomatoes and seasoned with garlic and other herbs!

Yes, julyteen, the movie seems to be very nice and quite interesting, have you tried the dish itself? Oh, and I did not have the pleasure of Mylotting and watching films simultaneously, as if I write, I can’t see movie and if I see movie, I can’t write (I write while looking at the keyboard). But, when I see movie on TV, I can just browse here! :-) Thanks for sharing!:-)

I do like ratatouille especially served over egg noodles, rice or mashed taters... or even baked taters for that matter. I think it is a fine home cooked wholesome vegetable dish that is very satisfying to the taste buds.

Hello Modestah, All the combinations you listed sound yummy! I haven't tried them with egg noodles or mashed taters but I surely will! Thanks for the suggestions!:-) I do believe that it's not only tasty, but gives us a chance to eat different vegetables and hence get the benefits of each of them! Thanks for sharing!:-)
