I made my first apple pie and it was sooooooooo good I'm making another one today before I go into work later :)
I had some apples here that needed to be used up and so I made a pie without a recipe and it turned out lovely....It was so easy to do :)
So, what have you attempted for the first time that turned out perfect and you surprised yourself or was there something that you tried for the first time that flopped?

I can't remember that far bag pal ,I taught my sons to cook and bake , My eldest son still does .My granddaughters still joke that they prefer their Dad to cook rather than their MUm , I think it is great that you bake , it seems to be a dying art , People just want to have quick foods all the time , Nice subject pal , xx

Thanks Weemam *HUGS*
I truly love to bake cookies and make squares etc. at Christmas time :) I made heart shaped cookies for Valentines and a heart shaped cake also :)
This was my first attempt at apple pie and without a recipe I was quite proud of myself and of course, my husband was happy :)
Have a wonderful day my dear friend!

My eldest has a gluten intolerance and I always baked for him before he got married , I was always changing recipes around just for something different :) . I helped him to make a gorgeous gateau for my Mums birthday one year he was only about 110 or 11 , he decorated it with fresh fruit and cream and it was gorgeous , then he tried to put in on the top shelf of the fridge and pushed all the topping off he was so upset lol , he is now 45 :) xx

That is wonderful, I am not so brave to make something without at least some kind of recipe.. Actually, most things I make the first time, even with a recipe usually flop. But I usually learn what I did wrong and then do it correctly afterwards..:)

Well...I did get some advice from my Mom before hand but her recipes are all in her head and she just told me to put in some of this and a bit of that LOL I had to play a guessing game but my Mom was right....It is so easy to do! :)
I'm so glad you learn from your mistakes...the sign of a good cook! :)

Oh dear....well, when I was about fifteen I made this cake because my Grandparents were coming for dinner and it looked fine and was iced fairly nicely but could not be cut! LOL It was hard as a rock and I was so embarrassed at the time!

My dear, i am NOT a baker!! lol I like to cook, but baking is another story! I dont even have any baking equipment!! i guess it doesn't help that i have no cubard space as it is.. so i'd have no place to put it at all. Congrats on your pie. I love apple pie, but you know my favourite has got to be pumpkin. MMmm

Hi heavenschild,
I can't believe you're going into work today, with all of this snow!;) Congratulations on the apple pie. I'd love to try a piece sometime.:) A lot of my mom's recipes were in her head too, and sadly, that's why we no longer have any of them. She did have a well worn book, with hand written ones, but that disappeared many years ago. For our first Christmas without her, I attempted to make her dark Christmas fruit cake. It turned out great, and was so yummy, and I was just nineteen. However, I haven't attempted a pie in years, in fact, not since my teens. My mom 'tried' to show me how to make piecrust from scratch, and I botched it so badly, that it was hard as rock.:(

Oh Mom I must confess that the crust was store bought!! I am not gifted like my Mother in that area I have to go pre-made LOL!
And yes I must brave this blowing whirling snow and get a bus to the mall and then transfer there as I can get off right in front of my work then hope I have to go to Tims for a tea before I start to warm up!! The store should really be closed today but of course it is not!!!
Love and Hugs

Store bought crust is good too!
I do hope that you survive this weather, and make it on time, for your 'Tim's.' You're right, your store should be closed. I hate the way retailers think, in this regard. Things are quiet here today, as my daughter's been at a '16th birthday sleep over,' and then is 'supposed to be' coming home for a couple of hours, before heading out to a '2nd sleep over.' She's supposed to be at the 2nd one for 5:30. What a day for all of this. They may have to go by dogsled!:(

Dog sled is right Mom! I am so tired of this winter but you have brought a little smile to my face this morning with this comment ;)
Yes, there were customers in but it was pretty quiet and everyone was sent home at least a half hour early all day yesterday and we got a lot of cleaning done! I heard from another customer that the other PC was closed and she was surprised we were open so that just goes to show you something......Anyhow, I made it home safely with a ride from my supervisor as I waited forty five minutes for a cab that never showed up and so she made sure I got home...what nasty weather!!!

Much of any desserts I tried to make ends up a flop the first time. It's always the wrong ingredients susbstituted (yup, I like to experiment) or I did not beat the eggs long enough or the heat's too high...
Eventually I just relied on instant mixes but that killed some joy in the creative baker in me so after my oven stopped working, I turned to the microwave but the results aren't as great.
Now I got myself a new oven and am back to sourcing out new recipes to experiment with. As for my proud moment, I made a banana cake yesterday and succeeded on the first try!

I must say I knew what to put in because I asked my Mom but she did not give me the measurements so I had to guess the amounts and I am so glad that it came out so well!!

So glad your chicken turned out! :)
I made a Chicken noodle casserole from just throwing things together one time and it was so delicious that every one asks for it all the time now! That was over five years ago for my Husbands step mom only we weren't married yet so it was brave of me to do this but turned out very good! :)

Well done! No wonder you are so proud of yourself sweety! I think the thing I was most proud of making was meringues - first time I made them and they were delicious , nice and chewy in the middle! I only ever managed to make them like that and I have never managed it since! xxxx

Meringue is something I have never tried but my Mother's is excellent!
I must admit my second pie was not as good as I put too much cinnamon in it! :(
It is still quite good though if you eat itwith vanilla ice cream :)

Ohhh..can I come over and have some? And I just bet your whole home smelled great as it was baking...one of the reasons I love those apple/cinnamon candles burning as it makes the place smell like I'm baking an apple pie.
Well I've done a lot of cooking and baking...baked all kinds of pies..apple, cherry, sweet potato, lemon merange...but my triumph one time (at least I think) was when I made a homemade coffee flavored flan...which is a predominantly Spanish/Mexican type of "pie"...it's almost like a custardy kind of pie...the real challenge was to make the caramel sauce....one has to "melt" sugar until it gets slightly brown, then pour into a larger pie pan and place the flan upside down on the poured caramel sauce and place in the refridge to "set"
