I really love both but, I think my favorite is probably Chinese in some cases. I really love sesame chicken. I know that I can eat sesame chicken all day. But yea man I really love the great taste of sesame chicken. I think that I like the rice better with the Japanese. Get some ginger sauce and put it in the rice. You should try Japanese also if any of you guys never tried it. But i like rice. I do not know now which one is my favorite. I really love them both.

I didn't touch on Nipponese cuisine previously, but from my childhood, it was and is one of my favourite cuisines. Partly because of the mysticism that surrounded a particular Japanese restaurant my parents would take us to every few years in the city. It was a fantastical mystical place. It began with the komono clad hostess that met us at the door and lead us over the little arched bridge and through a garden to the main dining room. Along the way we would get a quick glimpse of the sushi bar. The main room was surrounded with the sliding rice paper walls of the "private" tea rooms. All of which just made the place magical to a child!
Of course as a child, my favourite dishes were the shrimp tempura and teriyaki. My tastes grew as I did and now I am more fond of sitting at the sushi bar enjoying sashimi and handrolls. One of the most intriguing aspects of Nipponese cuisine is the presentation, it is one of the most intricate of all cuisines and is steeped in legend and tradition. I love getting a real Bento Box for lunch, it's so much fun opening all the little food gifts. And least I forget, a big bowl of Miso is a great way to chase away a cold!
Thanks Des for selecting my earlier answer as your favourite!

Wow! You should write for some of those gourmet food magazines! What a a setting you have just conjured!
I saw a film once called 'Yin Shi Nan Nu', of course I saw it as 'Eat Drink Man Woman'. I LOVE that film, in fact I'm going to go watch it.
I always thought it was Japanese, now I come to find out it is from Taiwan. I am pretty ignorant of the geography over that way, and the distinctions of the different cultures, but I do know they can take those differences pretty seriously! From my perspective they all seem to have more in common than different... that whole area over there just has such a graceful, appreciative, colorful, laughing, wise aura. It is the East - the dawn of civilization, the mysterious Orient, full of riches and treasure! I love it all, I don't care about the distinctions they make amongst themselves.
One of my favorite poems of all time is a poem called 'The Country House' by a Chinese poet named Ch'u Ch'uang 1, (translated into English by Kenneth Rexrode).
All these things your writing reminds me of. I would not be surprised to find that you were already a successful food or travel writer slumming on mylot! Hehehe.

I don't think that one is better than the other, I think they are both good. It just depends on which mood I am in. There are not a lot of good japanese restaurants in my hometown, but there is a really good Chinese restaurant. My husband loes to cook, and he can cook almost anything.

I live in massachusetts and we are lucky to have many good japanese restaurants. I think sushi is the way to go. it is definitely one of the healthiest forms of food and has a deep history that has not been completey americanized like chinese food. nowadays it is hard to find authentic chinese food, but you can almost always get authentic japanese.

I like both and agree, Sesame Chicken is really good, but I am a bit partial to Japanese tempura dishes. I like sweet and sour battered chicken, and I love Tempura Banana with Toffee Sauce. Yummy!!!
Brightest Blessings.

Granted, taste is individual, but from experience and experimentation I rank the major Asian cuisines as follows: Vietnamese 1st, Thai/Khmer 2nd, Japanese 3rd, Chinese 4th, and Indian and Korean tied for 5th. This is by no means a comment on quality, each of these cuisines is of high quality and contain a variety of ingredients.
I have eaten several of these cuisines in their native countries, and at both high-end restaurants and street-vendor stalls.
- I've eaten Thai in Bangkok and Khmer in Siem Reap.
- In Shenzhen Guangdong (Canton in English) China I of course had Cantonese, and also in Hong Kong. I found the Chinese food in Taipei Taiwan to be more like Fujian of the mainland.
I have eaten all these cuisines at American restaurants all across the country.
A cuisine I forgot to mention is Malay, which I have sampled in both Kuala Lumpur and in America. Which is a bit courser than the more refined Asian cuisines and in general is quite spicy.
I pick Vietnamese for the top slot because of not only its unique components but also its fusion of Chinese elements, French influences, and the citrus and curries of Thai.
The American-Chinese cuisine is mostly based on Cantonese with a bit of Hunan and Szechuan to add some serious spice. 19th century Chinese immigrants who came to America to work on building the western railroads created a style of Chinese food not found in China by utilizing local ingredients and catering to the western American tastes.

I think it's not that fair to compare Chinese and Japanese based on what you have in the U.S.
the Japanese restaurants in US are pretty much at the same level as those in Japan. But what Chinese restaurants cook are very different from the restaurants in China. And you don't have the opportunity to try many really amazing Chinese dishes in US.
If you really like Chinese food, maybe you'd like to try them in China :)

I prefer Japanese food myself. I love to make sushi at home, it is sooo good:) The last time I visited Okinawa, Japan was when I was 17, and I was so lucky to experience their wonderful restaurants. The bread from their bakerys can be so addictive:) I'm craving some right now lol.

I love chinese but never tried japanese but i've always wanted to try sushi. Is it good? I could always go for a nice Indian though. Even though I don't like really spicy stuff I love chicken kurma lol and onion barjees. But chinese is definitely best. I love aromatic crispy duck pancakes and shredded chilli beef and special fried rice with sweet and sour sauce and of course chicken chow mein. :)

Me too i like them both, if you like sesame chicken you should try General tao chicken, its a bit more spicy depending on whoever cooked it. As for japanese food, sushi is the most popular dish. If you want to go more into the japanese culture, you should try Okonomiyaki or Yakisoba.

I also like both, but I think I tend to choose Japanese more than Chinese food. Mostly because I really like things grilled and I find them more in Japanese food than chinese. Chinese tends to have more fried stuff and I don't eat fried things that much.

I can't decide. Plus some dishes can be found in each others cuisines (dumplings, fried rice, nikuman, ramen/noodles). If I had to choose I'd say Chinese is slightly better, but the jury is still out on it. Japanese has a lot of dishes that are fantastic (sushi, miso, takiyoki, eel, wakame, tonkatsu).

Each country has its culture and characteristics. As we stand facing a choice, our own choice, the choice of our own is worth pursuing.Perhaps you will reget it,at least we know the truth.
