I for one, cannot sleep unless there is some kind of noise. I have to have a t.v. on or a radio... a movie playing over and over... I have to have some kind of noise. When I try to sleep in silence, I start hearing "weird" noises and get scared. Even if I don't hear strange noises, I just can't seem to sleep without noise! I prefer sleeping with the t.v. on so that I have sound and light. How do you guys fall asleep??

I listen to talk radio all night long infact the radio in the bedroom is never ever turned off. It's a habit i have had for years and it doesn't bother my hubby at all. I don't like a TV in the bedroom - I always fall asleep when I'm half way through watching something and don't like the flickering light so its radio CD or nothing for me.

I've tried falling asleep with nothing on at all, and I just can't. I've heard it was better for you and you wake up more refreshed but I've always awakened more when there was no noise at all. I wish I could handle not having a t.v. in my room but I never go in my room until it's time for sleep and I just put a movie in and fall asleep!

Hi Karma, I must say that this topic is really interesting because I for one have actually mused about this issue on and off. I live in an apartment which is just about 50 meters from the main road so I hear the sound of traffic all the time. When I first moved in I was disturbed by the continuity of the sound of vehicles, the screeching of brakes and horns as well as motorcyclists who seem to enjoy stepping down hard on their accelerators as they zoom to goodness knows where. Anyhow, I must have gotten used to it after a few weeks or so and I just tuned it out but if I want some real peace and quiet I will not sleep in my living room which is facing the main road directly even though I am living on the 12th floor. Thankfully, my bedroom is at the back so if I close the door the noise is reduced by 75%. I prefer to have relative quiet when I want to sleep or rest - does not have to be complete silence but just the ordinary sounds of life which assures me that I am not alone. Usually I will read a book till I feel myself nodding off or I will watch television till I am sleepy. I suppose 'noise' is sometimes welcome and reassuring but at other times irritating and sends my blood pressure soaring.

Knock on wood, but for now I can sleep with the TV on or off, the lights on or off...whatever. lol I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing? lol I used to have trouble sleeping because I went to bed first. The TV drove me nuts from the other room. I started wearing headphones to bed and listening to Chopin. At one time, I could not sleep for hearing my heart beat. I have a heart murmur and it really gets loud! If I was on my left side, which I always ended up on, it kept me awake or woke me up. So I got a "sound machine." It plays like 10 different sounds, and my favorites were "ocean waves" and "rainfall." It really worked for me. There are really expensive ones and really cheap ones. I think mine cost about $25. Sleepwellbaby.com has quite a few of them for sale. You might like something like that.

I have to sleep with a fan running so that I have a constant sound that drowns out all the little sounds that I hear at night. I live in an apartment and there is noise all night long because we all don't keep the same schedule. When I'm out in the country and there's no one around, I usually sleep very well. I sometimes have the radio on when I first go to bed, but I always fall asleep. Luckily, I have a timer on it, so it turns itself off.

I do sleep without noise most of the time. In fact, I would be more awake if I hear noises. LOL. Occasionally, when I cannot sleep, I do on the TV and try to sleep in front of it. Not sure if it is the noise or the show that is boring me to sleep.

Most of the time I do not use noise during the time I am sleep. But I would say that I play my laptop music sometimes when I go to bed. I just play my gospel music while I am sleep. That is like the most peaceful sleep. But I really like peace and quiet a lot of times to go to sleep. But I think that television, can definitely make you fall a sleep sometimes. Especially if it is nothing that is entertaining.

I cannot possibly sleep if its noisy. I also sleep with the lights off. Personally , I find it more relaxing with these type of setup. After the stressful day at work and having been outside the house with so much noise, I would like to come home and relax. I am used to working in a night shift, and my work is really stressful. I worked at a call center and it is really tiring, answering calls, explaining this and that. My work world is pretty noisy, that is why probably I prefer the opposite when I am at home.

Sounds so bizarre! Why ,why you start hearing "weird" noises when you try to sleep in silence?I myself do not belive any ghosts or superstitious things exisiting in the world, but occassionaly I am confused by some inexplainable things happened around me. So if you could not sleep without noise, I suggest you keep your mind blank and count sheep mutely.Hope that can be helpful to you. I once suffered from insomnia.

I prefer a bit of quiet myself!! The bioler in our house is in a really funny place..at the bottom of the stairs...so if its running when i go to bed i can hear the chugging in my bedroom....!! On rare occasions if i feel like a bit of company i put the tv on very low...just to soothe me off to sleep

I am like that, too. TV is my lullabye, when I am about to sleep I turn on the TV and sleep. For me, it's an assurance that I am not alone. I just had it on timer (for 30 minutes), but sometimes I get to sleep right away because my mom would complain the next day that she had to turn off the TV for me. Just this week, because there were few good TV shows, brother just turn on the radio every night, and I sleep using the music from the radio as my lullabye.
