Why do we all fall for these stories?

How many times have we seen ridiculous discussions like "I have se* with my aunt, mother, dog or whatever? Those are the discussions that end up getting 90 responses and then we wonder why we only get 30 or 40. SENSATIONALISM....that's all it is. Make up some outrageous story and I'm willing to bet you will get at least 90 responses too. Personally I don't respond to them because for one thing I really have nothing to say because I'm sure it's not true and for another why should I help some fool (although I give them credit for being able to think of these things to get responses) earn money here on mylot this way instead of working hard the way the rest of us do and being honest.
Why do people respond to this type of discussion? Do you always "buy into" them and give them the responses they are looking for or pass them by?

Well some think people thought the kid was gloating about that,so people including myself,my feel the need to tell him how sickening that is.I usually wouldn't respond to something of that nature, but the boy seemed to be pround that it happened, which he should have been ashamed that hima nd his aunt let something like that happen.true or not,if really don't deserve a response, but its hard for some people to ignore subjects like that.I guess people have the right to respnd if they want, and pretty much post what they want,so if you don't like thet posting report it and just move on,because people will keep posting them no matter what really happens.ATTENTION is what they want and what they get.

I actually played along with one in which you are referring. Mostly out of boredom. I just wanted to let him know I was onto him, as was most of us. And, I told him that I hope he had fun seeing the $ signs in his eyes before that particular discussion gets deleted as does his myLot account. But, no! I did not buy into it and, if I weren't sort of feeling a little bit spunky today, I would have just ignored it! I just had a moment there and, it felt good to get the little snarky spunky twerp off my chest for the day. LOL!

The sad part about that is if the discussion gets deleted the people who responded will lose credit for their responses and then they get upset about losing part of their earnings.

Yea. I know! The good thing is that, like me, some people knew it would probably get deleted and decided to take the chance to tell him off a little bit! LOL! But, I do feel bad for those who did fall for it because their responses will be deleted which will upset them as they probably won't even know or remember what got deleted.

I don't respond to those posts. They are popular and get a lot of people posting, but you will never see me post that kind of discussion. I'm concerned that these same people post how much they are making and its a lot more than me. This means if they are making large amounts of money, then that is what Mylot wants to see on their board. Mylot should realize allowing that type of topic means many of us would never buy any of the offers on this board. I certainly won't based on this information.

There are members who earn a lot more money than I do and it's not only obvious by the discussions they have about it but by their numbers.

I haven't come across any of those discussions. Lucky me. Yuck! I would never respond to such matters. Also, I would have thought that those discussions would have been deleted by MyLot powers to be, so to speak. Well, don't get too upset, it's not worth it. Just keep doing what you're doing here, have a great time.

The only thing that bothers me about discussions like his is that it's probably a story made up to get everyone's attention and unfortunately some people make take it as the real thing.

To be honest, I would rather say, I wouldn't just look at such discssions - one thing, I don't care about such things - so no point in seeing them. And as you said, this stories are mostly made-up - what even I wonder is, why not be truthful and live and discuss and do everything honestly? There's nothing wrong with that I believe?
I agree with you. But I wouldn't say that those discussions get 90 responses - the reason being that I don't at all open them up. :p lol.

Yeah, really, I wonder why do they have to start up something that is false!! And so many things that are interesting, and "not made-up"... I myself have so many things to discuss upon and yet, and I end up with not starting them, since there are so many things to just respond to!!

My feeling is that if someone has to make up stories to be able to earn money here then they have a problem. There are so many things to start discussions about why make them up?

I dont beleive it happened and I dont like that he is getting so many responces for it.
and yet alot of us are still talking about it. this will be my last responce to this matter.
if we keep talking about it, it gives it power and will keep going I think we should just let it drop the more we talk about it the more people are going to try to find the discussion and respond to it.
thats all I have to say on the subject.

My point exactly....we are giving people like this the power to keep on doing something that is not right. That discussion should have had 0 responses yet they keep on growing and he keeps on earning.

These People know that they will get responses on them as so many People will be disgusted with what they are writing and before you know it they fall for it and respond even if it is to say they are disgusted
If People would stop and think first and realize if they respond this Person is earning easy Money the responses would not be so high

Hi Sweetie I know that yours are true believe me and just let someone doubt them and I will have my say to them
That is the problem here they believe the Sh*t like that but when it comes to truth like yours they say it is made up and that makes me angry when that happens but none of your Friends have ever doubted you Sweetie and never will

i did see one like this this morning. someone else started a discussion about it and i said just what you are saying. that it is untrue and i would not help them make money off from it. you have to wonder what kind of people they have to be to start a discussion like that.

Do we get paid for number of responses we receive to a discussion? That would be my first question. I would imagine so, yet another mylotter said we get paid for posting the discussion as long as it gets at least one response. So I dont know whats true or not.. but I think people posting fabricated stories such as this need to be kicked off. I mean, obviously its not true and if it were and you post it on mylot, then I'm not going to believe you anyways.. so yes, country.. it is ridiculous.

There have been discussions about whether it's ok to start made up discussions or not and there were a lot of mixed thoughts on this. Since it's a public forum it's ok to do it but for me personally I wouldn't and don't care for anyone who does.

I've seen those discussions..sheesh..I avoid them like the plague anyway, like who cares? You're so right that it is some kind of sensationalism and to get attention...gee, why would anyone WANT attention like that anyway whether if the story is true or not??

Oh as a ps...maybe it's the same logic as to why so many people are drawn to the National Enquirer and want to read the "I gave birth to an alien" stories..heehee

I mainly stay away from this type of discussion because I feel eventually it will get deleted and of course I'll lose credit for my response. I couldn't care less what anyone does in their personal life or on mylot.

I saw that discussion, but I decided not to respond to it. While reading through the discussions I asked myself, "Why is everyone taking the time to respond and chew him out while still fueling his discussion?" Whether you disapprove of it or not your still helping him earn money by responding. The best thing to due is just ignore it and it will go away by itself...

I am fairly new here and i guess you could say niave, but i won't fall anymore....just like the one started earlier on "There is No God",i am still fuming over that one and upset,i will just pass them on by from now on....in all reality...they are probably just trying to boost their revenue...i won't take part.

There are a lot of discussions that get me "fuming" too and the best thing for me to do is pass them by. I know a lot of people like to really get "into it" but I was banned from here once for letting my opinion be known and I learned my lesson.

I really do not believe these stories at all, firstly any person who did engage in that sort of activity -in my mind- would not broad cast it to all and sundry!
I have only seen 1 post like that so far as i am relativly new and did not bother to respond to it, as i think they are doing it for the reaction and when people reply they are feeding them in a way.
So yes i think if we all ignored those sort of posts then they would stop - hopefully.
Regards
Lucy

they are only just doing it for the pennies, want attention, and figure that they can't get plenty of replys, I wonder did Mylot ever delete it, If they dind'nt something is wrong with there thinking.but yet honest discussion our deleted, for no reason, how abot the jokes, here, they don't want you posting jokes. this is worster than some of the jokes I have seen. People like the Jerry Sprinker kind of stuff.

I dont really know if i should believe or not... but sometimes i think we ought to at least believe and it takes courage for them to tell such things to us.
Maybe it is not true.. and it is acutally just now that i have thought that maybe, they are sying it for the money and to get too many responses. i dont think i have responded to these cause such topics really is not making me comfortable.. i have nothing to say so i wont reply to them.

I'm going to tell you Ctry, what I told that person (in terms of response)
"Great story. Could have used a vampire. (-_-)"
Alright I'll give you a better answer. Ctry, as long as the discussion gets attention and I mean really gets it, then they'll be the ones to get the responses. People don't want to talk about other peoples lives (unless its something outrageous). People don't want to talk about science, philosophy... they'll talk about the other things like that particular discussion because (its something easy, its something ridiculous, or people care enough about it). Pathetic, but true. Just look at many of the discussions that have 100+ responses. They've had the things I described (and another thing they might have is a large active friends list).
In terms of the discussion itself, occasionally its nice having a dumb discussion like this (instead of 50 discussions about O-drama, 50 discussions asking for Bush's hanging, etc and so forth... I know... I'm being facetious, but I'm making a point).
Sometimes I'll just not answer, but its been awhile since I've seen a discussion like that. Plus plenty of other people didn't believe the clown and made it known they didn't believe him. Maybe next time the guy will be left alone (like the discussion copier, and the news without links spammer).

I have just answered another post with regards to that same post, the two ways I look at it are it was done simply because the person knew it would ruffle some feathers and would get a lot of responses or because it has genuinly happened and wanted some advice from it. I just pass them by, I would not know what to say anyway!!

Such topics always catch the eye of people. People always like to hear shocking news and other peoples opinion on them. These may not be true too. But then such people are no more guilty than others who make up stupid stories to earn more response. Pity sells. So i have seen people making up sad stories just to earn more responses.

As what a friend always tell me - "Se* Sells." I guess it's human nature to respond to such topics, although I still haven't encountered of those kinds here.
