Large or small breeds...

St Bernard - He's just beautiful!!

Hello.:) I am wondering if you prefer a large breed dog or a small breed...and, if you can explain it, why. (I say it that way because I am not sure I can explain my preference for large breeds...lol) I like small breeds ok and some are downright adorable, but for the most part, I feel the bigger the dog the better! My family wants to get another dog but both hubby and daughter say not another big dog- they both want a smaller one. (They both just laughed at me when I mentioned the St Bernard at the shelter...*sigh*) So, which do you prefer...?

Oh, I love big dogs, the bigger the better. Tom always did too, until he got his little Jack Russells several years back. Of course I loved them too, but I still prefer a dog that you don't have to worry about hurting when you step on them. It was really funny when Tom and I got married last Aug and we had his three Jack Russells, one cockapoo and my Rosie (German Shepherd) in the bed with us at one time. THAT was fun!

Oh, crowded wasn't the term for it. Especially since two of the Jack Russells insisted on coming up on the pillows with us, rubbing all over him. Ick ...

LOL! that sounds very crowded! I let my golden up on the kids bed every now and then, but not mine. Not willing to share and she'd probably put a hole in my down comforter...holes in down comforters are not fun! Thanks for responding! :)

I dont much care for the small breeds. I think many times thy are much more loud, and bark much more than the larger breeds. My dog is black Lab/Chow mix. I would consider him a medium sized dog (except he is very fat) The large breeds are nice, but I feel like they should be kept outside, because they need so much more exercise. My dog is perfect, I love him very much!

I don't like to leave my dogs outside, but we have 10 acres (right next to my parents 470) that they can run around on. My golden ran with the 4-wheeler the other day for about 1/2 mile- she was pooped out for two days! lol Thanks for responding Jess. :)

I like all breeds large and small. However circumstance change and I went from having a doberman pinscher and an Irish setter to small dogs. At the moment I have 3 chihuahuas. A very important point in my choice is that I grow very attached to my dogs and really suffer the loss when they die. It is a fact that large breeds have a much shorter life span usually about 6 years whereas small dogs can live for as many as 18 to 20 years.

Interesting- I didn't know it was such a large difference. I had a couple Dobermans before- beautiful dogs. My daughter would love to have a teacup chihuahua- that is WAY too small for me. . Thank you for responding.

i like the big dogs. i am not real sure why i just don't like the little dogs. i can't tell you why i like the big but i can tell you why i wouldn't want a small dog. they are cute thats for sure but i don't think they are as friendly and i think they have more of a mean streke in them. i know not all of them are but all but one that i have been around have been and the big dogs seem to be more friendly and not as testy.

That is sort of how I feel, though I have met many friendly small dogs. Still, they make me nervous. Thanks for responding

I was always raised around small to medium sized dogs... and after I met my husband we tried 2 different times to have a big dog. Once we had a rotweiler mix and another time we had a pit bull mix and I just can't get used to big dogs. They slobber all over the place after they drink and then they want to come lick you and your soppin wet and they drool everywhere. I've had a maltese and a lhasa-poo since I was 17yrs old and they are my babies and go everywhere with me. Even on vacations. So I can say I love little dogs... and would never try to get a big dog again.

I'm more of a cat person than a dog person, but I like visiting other people's dogs. I'm the same way with children. I prefer smaller dogs, because they won't knock me down when they jump up on me, and they are more comfortable in my lap, than are larger dogs.

I think it is so funny that some big dogs attempt to be lap dogs- NOT funny when you are a guest in their home, though! We plan to get a cat, too, I love cats. Hubby says he doesn't like them so much, but he is always sneaking in a pat here and there. lol

Can I be difficult and say medium sized? I'm not for a small yip yip dog. I have a medium german shepard beagle mix. I like large dogs but they take up an awful lot of room. I prefer a beagle mix-- I might have to get a small dog though because I love those miniature beagles!!

There has to be one in every crowd, doesn't there...? haha. Medium sized dogs are a very good compromise. Thanks!

I prefer medium to large breeds. I grew up with a Great Dane and a German Shepherd, then later had greyhounds. we currently have a lurcher and a Scottish Deerhound. big dogs are better to cuddle. you can really wrap your arms around them and give them a big hug.

I have always had small breeds in the past, usually Maltese. I love the affection and let them stay in the house most of the time. Hubby wamted a Golden Retriever so I bought him one for Christmas of 2006. He was just the cutest little butterball then at 7 weeks old. Now he is 1 1/2 and weighs about 85 pounds! He is basically still a pup so is clumsy and goofy ball of energy. When he runs to me from the back yard it's like watching an approaching freight train at full speed. He doesn't mean to be rough but he can knock you down to love up to you. Small dogs are so much easier for me to play with and live with. Big dogs are beautiful, but I really like smaller ones.

Some of the big dogs sure do seem like big brutes, don't they? Ones that aren't well trained make me nervous, too. Thanks for responding

I absolutly LOVE St. Bernards! They are my favorite breed of dog! I guess that sort of answers your question as to which size I prefer. The bigger the better! I love big goofy dogs. I have a Pit Bull, and she's not really that big, weighing in at 45lbs. but she is big enough for her wildness. I personally would really LOVE to have a St. Bernard, or even a Newfoundland, because they are really mellow, loveable dogs that are good with children. I don't personally have any children yet, but I plan to have a few in my future. I like small dogs too, but not very many of them. I think they are too snippy, and some are way to yappy. My sister has a puggle, and his name is Meeko. He's the cutest little thing, but he barks so much, and tends to nip constantly. Don't get me wrong, I love him, he's just really annoying.

ROFL- snippy and yippy! :) I could have had a Newf for free- a lady had gotten herself into more than she could handle. Hubby said no. :( I know some small breeds can be very friendly and calm. I need to figure out which ones they are.

I have always had small breeds (Dachshunds) however since I am older and 3 kids later, I would have to say if I was going to get another dog. I would get a lab or a golden retriever. There is something sbout having a big dog. Those 2 dogs are great with children. The downfall is that they live for about 10 years or so give or take. My do research. You can check online which dogs are best with children. Check for which dog is better for allergies etc. I just love to cuddle on the floor with a big dog:)

We have a golden...she is good with older kids (like over 5). She is a nervous dog, though, not typical golden temperament. She had a hard first 3 years (before we got her). Thanks for reminding me to do research on normal breed behavior and such.

i prefer big dogs. i don't want to worry about breaking a little dog's bones if we're playing. I have a pembroke welsh corgi and a rottweiler lab cross and i can definately say i am alot rougher with my mix than my corgi.

Ah, good point...though we don't rough house with our big dog either, it is a good point to keep in mind. Thanks!

I would love to have a dog but my husband does not want any pet at home. If you are getting another dog then its perfectly fine if you make sure to introduce them correctly and you will be fine as long as they know you are the pack leader then they should be fine but if one is being more dinant over the other make sure you correct the one who is causing the problem. Good Luck!

It's good that they play with eachother and are comfortable. My cousin says that generally dogs which are strong in built try to bully other one.

I have a small breed and a large breed. I see no differents the large breed thinks she is as small as the small breed. My small breed dog likes to act like a cat and the large breed will follow the lead of the small breed. I love them both and I never have a bad day. They keep me laughing. They like to play with eachother. My small breed dog is 10 years old, and my large breed dog is 5 years old.

I am more into the medium sized dogs. I am just not a small dog person. I heard smaller dogs are alot more difficult to house train as well. Right now we are saving to get an english bull dog which I am really excited about. But I like the dogs that weigh anywhere between 60 - 90 pounds. their not small and their not overly huge.
