Something Old, Something New

I'm trying something new for dinner tonight. I found some really thin boneless pork chops the other day that I need to use up. I cut up some new potatoes and put in the bottom of the crockpot, half an onion, tossed the skinny minny porkchops on top, then added a can of cream of mushroom soup with a little milk, salt/pepper/etc and hit the button. My Mom used to make a dish that I absolutely loved that I haven't been able to replicate. It was regular boneless pork chops, sliced potatoes, cream of rice soup and I don't remember what all else. It was a favorite of mine growing up, and I loved chewing on those pork chop bones - mmmm mm. I don't really think this will come out the same, but I'm hoping it will at least be edible. So what about you? When is the last time you just threw a few things together and hoped for the best? What did it turn out like?

I think we should change food every meal. It'll make us feel interest in discovery the difference between the dish had eaten and the dish hadn't eaten

I wish I could think of more things to cook so we could have more of a variety. My husband sure doesn't complain though, and neither is my waistline.

I'm always throwing things together so it's hard to say what my favorite recipe is in that category. The pork chop meal sounds good. The little thin ones are my favorites. I'm not too sure I would put them in a crock pot though as the cooking times on a corck are 4-8 hours and with meat that thin it might dry them out. You can test them after a few hours or cook them on high for 4 rather than low for 8. I like chicken in a crock pot and meats that are a bit tough are great in a crock pot...the meat just falls apart. May I ask where do you find "cream of rice soup" ? I've never heard of it. Happy cooking!

Yeah, you said "cream of rice" LOL. Oh so you already had them and they tunred out good! I think I will try that too. So it's sliced potatoes, cr. of musroom soup and thin chops oh high for 4 hours or would 8 be ok? I love those think chops fried up and I just eat them with my hands. The sopping up with bread sounds good! Thanks.

Oh, it wasn't cream of rice - is that what I wrote? I meant chicken n rice. I know Campbells used to make it, I'm not sure if they still do. These pork chops were very thin and I didn't cook for the full 8 hrs. I guess it was near noon when I put it on, I don't remember exactly. They didn't dry out at all since I had the soup and just a little bit of milk in there. It was awesome sopped up with bread n butter!

I did it on low and everything was fine. I cut up the new potatoes (I'm sure you could use other varieties, I just didn't feel like peeling), added salt/pepper/garlic, etc, then tossed the chops on top, then added the soup and maybe a little less than half a can of milk. Oh yea, chopped onion with the potatoes too. Added a can of (drained) green beans maybe a half hour before serving and they were plenty warm enough. I did check on it throughout the afternoon so I could see if it was cooking too fast or chops not cooking, but my best guess is that it was about 5-6 hrs on low.

how did it come out? The last time I throw something together was 3 nights ago, I decided to try a cheese sauce macaroni. I never made it before, I boiled the macaroni noodles, in a bad I melted margarine with floor, then added mozzarella cheese and milk and simmered, I boiled broccoli, a new kind that I got it was rabaholi or something like that I don't know, any how I added the macaroni and the broccoli to the cheese sauce and I loved it it was wonderful

It was good! The best part was sopping up the 'juice' with bread and butter.

Actually, I haven't used my crock pot lately, as I have been cooking for 1 person. It had been one of my favorite ways to cook, but now it just makes to much food for me. I'm not really thrilled to eat leftovers.

I should use mine more, but I have trouble thinking of things to make. I knew I was going to make these little pork steaks today and it dawned on me that they were so thin, I figured they'd cook up easily in the crockpot in time.

I felt the same way since there are only 2 of us now, but I found a little tiny crockpot. Just 1 1/2 quart crockpot. I works out perfectly for a very small meal without all those leftovers.

I should get a small crock pot that is a great solution. Thanks for the suggestion.

About 36 years ago I made sweet & sour meatballs as sort of an appetizer. Just make up a bunch of meatballs, roll them in crushed corn flakes and cook in a skillet till done. Drain the grease off and then put them in a pot and pour a couple of cans of sweet & sour sauce over them. Nowadays you can use a crock pot but at that time I didn't have one. I used to use Contadina sweet & sour sauce in a can, but I haven't been able to find that brand for years, not sure if they even still make it, but any good brand will do. Add some pineapple chunks. Cover and simmer a couple of hours until meat is done and put it all in a serving bowl with a toothpick in each one. Or you can put them on a platter surrounded by white rice. Whenever we had a casual get together or pot luck with the neighbors, there was never one meatball left.

Mmmm, sounds good. I'll have to try your sauce. I get lazy so when I find a really good sauce or ingredient premade, I cheat and use that.

That sounds awesome. I make something similar for a main dish that we like here. Cook meatballs (sometimes I cheat and get the frozen ones) and in a large skillet drain pineapple juice, add a bit of cornstarch, vinegar and brown sugar and make that into your sauce. Add onion, green (and other colors, if you can get them) bell pepper and simmer in the sauce. Add meatballs and the canned pineapple and simmer to let the flavors meld a bit. Serve over noodles or rice. If you make enough, it's even better the next day.

hello friend, I knew this was your post without looking (reading via email) by sentence three...lol. I throw things together and hope for the best alot- usually due to poor planning and/or time management on my part). It almost always turns out good and usually is a huge hit. Alas, since I just threw things together, I can rarely ever recreate it.

LOL, you cheated, because you already read it on the group! I wish I could get the rest of the girls there to realize that they can make money here just by BSing like we do there, but it's their loss. Planning? Time management? What's that?

i think you can put anything in a crockpot and it will turn out good. at least thats what the hubby says cuz i don't eat the meat normally. i do love to try new things alot but lately being on the buget we are i won't cuz i am afriad if it turns out bad then i've wasted it. the last time we tried something new it was hotdogs. a friend of our worked at bar s and would bring us hotdogs, lunch meat, ham and what not all the time but it seemed like he would bring us about 10 packs of hotdogs every week. our freezer was so full of hot dogs we had to do something with them. my middle son would eat them right from the frig and would eat them every night if i made them but we still had a ton. anyway we love garlic so i cut a slit down the middle and added some garlic powder and cheese and my hubby did them on the grill. i'm not a big fan of hotdogs but they were very yummy. we also added garlic and cheese to the middle of our bugers and they were just as yummy. we are big on spices so we are always getting new spices to try and then we wiill mix them up and add to differentthings. last week i did rib in the crockpot with bbq sauce lemon juice and some new spice we had gotten and my husband loved them. he said it was the best he had ever had. thats his job though right.lol

I love hot dogs too but they're filled with junk that's not good for you, so I try not to eat them very often. Bologna isn't much better, but my husband loves his bologna and cheese sandwiches, so I'll succumb now and then too.

It sounds like it should turn out good. I wish you luck in finding the lost recipe...I know it can be frustrating not to know how to make something that you once enjoyed so much. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I wonder if Mom makes it anymore? If she does, I could still get it. It just doesn't come out like hers did, though ...

It is better to use new ones. New ones are fresh and would affect the over all outcome of your cooking. Having old ingredients would make your food spoil easily than having fresh new ingredients mixed with the food.

yaa I too have great experience of cooking. Once I had tried to make alluo kri..for my cousin brother. He is 6 years older than me..as I was not used to with cooking but that day I had decided to prepare food by myself.. so as I stared cooking sabji. I know that I hav to fry onions first, I put some oil in pan and then I put onions in it,but that time I forget to heat oil. But leave that then I put some salt and spices in that and mixed well with the stuff. And at last I put Potatoes in pan and left them for 1/2 an hour. After half an hour when i opened pan I found all it had burnt and smelled badly..that was my experience.............ha ..ha..ha..

Oh how funny. It's a good thing you caught it in time before something caught fire, though! How old were you when you did this - an adult or a child?

I don't really consider myself a good cook, but I've never had anyone go away from my table hungry either. I tend to just mix familiar things together and hope for the best!

My wife does it all the time. She did something with stewed tomatoes, beans and sausage that just came out really good. I didn't think I was going to like it but it was really tasty, served over rice. But now she can't even remember how she made it.

Oh, I do that all the time too! I don't write anything down as I'm doing it because I don't know how it's going to come out. Then when it does come out good, I haven't a clue how to do it again!
