Does listening to music affect your moods?

I find that if I want to get on in the house I play something really upbeat and polish to the beat of the music, if I want to cry I'll play something sad and I daren't put anything with a fast beat on in the car as I am likely to speed, but I also find that if I am feeling low if I put some lively music on it can lift my mood. Does music affect you in this way. Please share. Ellie :D Any responses received tomorrow as away for a few days I will respond to but upon my return. Ellie :D

My mom said when I was a baby, all the way up to about the age of ten, when slow music would come on the radio or TV, I'd cry. I didn't cry when I was ten, but I'd become depressed. That doesn't happen anymore. I guess I grew out of it. I can listen to slow, even sad music and it doesn't bring me down. I'm glad I can appreciate something beautiful without it being ruined because of my emotions. I usually feel relaxed now when I hear a slow song. But some songs still do make me cry. : )

That is so cool! I think you might be right about the cause. I'm amazed at the studies that have been done showing babies can hear what goes on outside the womb. What a wonderful thought.

Hello AmbiePam, It makes sense really, they say also that if you read books out loud whilst they are in the womb it encourages them to want to be read to as children and that the type of music effects. I wonder what your mother listened to when carrying you, it would be interesting to find out if you are able, maybe she was emotional listening to music whilst pregnant with you which in turn was passed onto you somehow with you crying at sad songs. I craved chicken when pregnant with the particular daughter too and she absolutely adores chicken above all other foods. Very interesting indeed. Ellie :D

Hello AmbiePam, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on music. I am so pleased it no longer mads you sad listening to slow songs. One of my daughters when she was a baby would only ever go to sleep listening to loud music, I put that down to the fact that I went to see a lot of lively bands whilst I was pregnant with her! Even now as a teenager she can fall asleep with noise whereas it keeps the rest of the house awake. Ellie :D

Well, it depends when the song really catches my attention. If the song catches my soul, I tend to be carried away by the lyrics and the notes of the song. I'm a frustrated musician, but that doesn't mean that I can't play any instruments, its just that, I gave up this career and stopped pursuing it for some personal reasons. Btw, great topic you have.

With so much variety availabe, is is hard not to find the kind of music that changes our mood from being sad to being happy in an instant. It can happen the other way round of course but there are buttons that can be used to change the mood back again. Have a great day from Deeeky/

Another good point that you have brought up is that there are so many items that produce music wherever we go and even places where we can enjoy that same music played by live bands and groups and even orchestras.

I feel that music does affect your mood. If you are sad, play happy sounding music and you will be happy in no time at all.Soft meditative music can help you to be more calm in life.

Yes listening to soft music can be very relaxing. I play soft music to my son before he goes to sleep with the sound of waves. My daughter though used to only go to sleep listening to very lively music but we all put it down to the fact that I went to see a lot of loud, lively bands when I was pregnant with her and as a baby she would sleep through noise, which was great really. Even now she never goes anywhere without her iPod. Thank you for sharing. Ellie :D

i love music. It completely relaxes me when i need it. However when i am upset i hear the song differently and it worsens my mood lol So typically when i am happy, sad, angry, frustrated, or whatever my mood may be, i choose to write instead of listening to music.
@ellie333 (21016)

I quite often wrtie to release any frustrations and anger too and then turn what I have written into a poem. I think most people enjoy music but like you say if you are upset hearing a song you would usually enjoy you hear differently, I agree. Ellie :D

Music is one of the best stress relievers. I listen to music anywhere I can. Music affects your mood. If you listen to some sad song you will sense a gloom even if you are happy. When I want to pump myself I listen to rock kind of music and after I am really get pumped up. Music is great for lovers I mean if you are with you're someone special and you play some romantic kind of music you will feel the emotions very effectively. I cannnot live without music. Music is kinda of tonic to level my moods. Even writng this respense I am listening to music and it help to respond well.

Gosh, a week ago. I'm late~~ eh, it does affect. Oftentimes i'm clear, i mean have nothing in the brain, don't consider anything. Then i turn on the radio, if it's a sorrowful one, i'd feel blue, recall my sore mmemories. but it's animate, i'd be encouraged and try to be optimistic. do affect me a lot

I used to select music to go with my mood, like if I was depressed I wanted to listen to sad songs. Now certain songs will come on and I will perk up because I like the upbeat music.

yeah music is something that deals with my sudden mood swings all teh time!!it really works great for me.when i'm feeling low and down in the dumps i would play something peppy and upbeat and i feel better.and when i am happy and feeling great and somebody plays a sad song number it lowers my spirits in an instant.i think it has psycological effect on human beings.no wonder music has been given so much importance in every area.
