Best Buys Return Policy....Is This Bogus Or What?

Tonight my husband and I bought a digital camera at Best Buy and paid $283.00 in cash because at the present my husband and I do not have a bank account. It's an awesome camera! However, after we bought it we realized we wanted to get a cheaper camera because the expense of the camera we bought would leave us without being able to do much Monday for our anniversary because we have several bills to pay and things of that nature.
So, before we even got the camera home we decided to return it to the Best Buy where we had purchased it from and perhaps get a more cheaper digital camera. So, we go back to Best Buy and we brought it over to customer service in order to return it and we hand the cashier our reciept. She punches in all the necessary data and then she turns to us and informs us that they have a policy that if the a customer purchases something over $250.00 with cash, they have to wait 7-10 buisness days to recieve a check in the mail for the returned amount because they don't have that kind of money in the store. So, they were pretty much saying that I had to hand over the merchandise but I couldn't get my money back for about two weeks. Are you kidding me?
First of all, a half an hour before we had just gave them $283.00, so, how can they tell us, 20 minutes before they were getting ready to close, that they didn't have that amount in the store? Um....I don't think so! My husband pointed to the register where we checked out and told the cashier, "that register over there does." Of course she ignored that statement real quick.
Second, when we purchased it, the cashier who checked us out never mentioned this return policy at all. So, I mentioned that to the cashier who was trying to preform the return for us. She said that she would get the manager and perhaps she could override it for us. The manager comes along and she punches in some numbers and then informs us that there is no way that she could override it. So, I explain to her that the cashier that checked us out never even mentioned anything about this return policy and that if it's a policy then they should mention it because it's an important factor. She says, "well, it's on the back of the reciept."
Now, I don't know about you all but I never check the back of the reciept. Who in the world thinks to check the back of a reciept? I don't kniw anyone who does this. I just think that if they are going to reinforce this policy, then they need to inform people who are paying over $250.00 in cash for an item, that if they return it they will have to wait 7-10 buisness days for a check in the mail and that all the information has been printed on the back of the reciept. Am I wrong? I really don't think so...
I personally have an issue with the fact that they want me to leave my expensive item with them and go home with nothing but a reciept and wait for a check in the mail. That's just so bogus! I was so upset with them that if I didn't love their movie selection so much, I would never return to them pft...Thankfully, my husband and I worked it out to where we can keep the camera and have a nice time on our anniversary as well. It took some budgeting and manuevering but all is cool because we put our heads together and worked it out. Still, it just made me so mad, I swear! However, at least we got one awesome camera out of the deal . Still, I just think their policy is so bogus...
What do you all think about this policy? Do you think it's reasonable or do you think it's bogus?

That would have made me mad also. I have never heard of a place that refunds you by a chek in the mail. On top of that you brought your recipt back and everything on the same day. I am glad we don't have a Best Buy here in my town. reading this makes me not want to shop there.

Yeah and we had not even made it home before we decided to return it and get one cheaper at Walmart. We had the reciept and we had just bought it a half an hour or less, before that. It's crazy and I agree with what someone told me on her (I think, it may have been my sister Vicky), they just do that to force you to take the item with you and not return it.

I would think with all the sales that they make they could havew easiley returned your money that same day. as for their rules they sound utterly asinine to me. After all you paid cash and they should have been able to return what you had paid. that is so silly. It seems most unreasonable and maybe thats why i do not do any business with them.

Yeah, it's really a ridiculous policy in my opinon. I don't blame you for not doing business with them and I'm seriously considering myself. Thanks!

Most return policies are to protect the store from being ripped off. I fail to see how returning cash for an item that was paid for in cash, was still in the box and you had the receipt, the store could be in anyway ripped off.
You should have demanded that the manager call her boss immediately. If she says her boss is unable you ask to speak to the boss' boss.

You know, we really should have stood our ground but it was late and I figured they were closing soon and I felt bad about making a scene but we really should have did something about it. Oh well, I think I will definitely contact the higher ups now. I need to check on their website to see who I can contact. Thanks!

That is very crazy. I am sorry to hear that you had a hard time. I agree with most everyone else said about understanding if you paid with a check.
I use to work in retail, so I understand the caution that some stores use, but this seems to be a little bit overboard. If they were concerned with counterfit money (and I don't see what other excuse they would have), they could easly use those counterfit markers.

Exactly, I think the only thing they were concerned about was making a sale and they don't want anyone to return their merchandise and this is one way to prevent them from doing so. It's just not right. Thanks for your responce, I appreciate it!

So basically, the store's policy caters to people with credit cards. That's not good for those who live on a budget and need to do things in cash. Bummer. Could they possibly exchange the item for a lesser one and send the difference in a check, per their policy?

Exactly, not everyone has a lot of money in a ban account. We are getting ready to open one but we have been on a tight budget and it's been hard. I think this whole world caters to the rich sometimes...
I'm not sure what they would have done if I asked them to do an exchange but we just decided to forget the hassle and just keep the camera. It all worked out in the end but still, we could have used the money. Oh well, next time we will think more before we buy something that expensive. Although, we are really enjoying the camera now

That is insane...if you pay with a check- yes, you have to wait so they can make sure it clears. If you pay with a credit card- it is put back on your card. If you pay in cash, YOU SHOULD GET CASH BACK! CRAZY! I would have been furious!
Glad you worked it out. At least you can take some nice pictures on Monday now...

Yes, exactly! I mean, we had just given them the money and they were trying to say that they didn't have that kind of money in the store? They are a huge chain and I KNOW they have that and more in their registers. It's just crazy if you ask me. Thanks for your responce! I'm glad we worked it out too. Maybe I will post the pics on here with my brand new camera

Hmm... best buy seems a bit cheapskate then.
Though I assume that you will indeed get the money back in the end, it is still unreasonable to hold the money for that long. And to say it does not have enough cash (whether true or not) is not a good excuse at all.
I have not tried returning items before so I am not sure about the return policies but still, I think you should lodge a complaint with the authorities.

Yes, I agree that the policy is so wrong and unreasonable.
I agree you should complain! You shouldn't let those big companies bully us small consumers!!

I just feel that I should not have to hand over an item that was that expensive and walk away with nothing. They had the money in the store because we had just paid them with it like a half an hour before. It was just all bogus! I think I'm definitely going to complain to someone because the policy is crazy and at least if they are going to continue with it, they need to have a huge sign at the registers stating their return policy in regards paying with cash of over $250.00 or more.
Thanks for your responce, it's very much appreciated!

sounds like a crock to me. I paid well over 250.00 for my daughters camera at circuit city. when we got home, she discovered that it was not what she really wanted. I was relieved because when we went back, the one she really liked was quite a bit cheaper. We did not have a problem at all. I've only been to bestbuy once. Thanx for the heads up...doesn't sound like a great place to do business with.

Man, we sould have shoped at Circut City! Darn it!
Yeah, I have always liked Best Buy but I never really have tried to return anything til now. I have lost a lot of respect for them now. This policy is just crazy and if they are going to stick with it they need to have a sign at the registers stating the policy and warning customers before they make their purchases.
Thanks again!

that is a bogus return policy - if it's written on the back of a recipt then how do you know what it is until after you purchased something and it's already too late???
If something like this ever happens to you, refuse to leave the store until you get your money back. a manager can over ride anything or figure out a way to get your money back even if the register won't allow it. you stand there in their face and show them you aren't backing down and they'll give you what you want real quick. what's their other option? call the cops so you? they won't do that as long as you are non threatening - they don't want that kind of bad publicity.
I know this because i've worked 5 years in customer service. i've learned every trick and secret to getting what you want. i could tell you how to get a free $30,000 kitchen from Home Depot, lol.
I personally don't shop at best buy anymore because they are so awful with everything. I bought a laptop there once and will never do it again. My laptop had nothing but problems, they sent it out for repair and held it hostage for 2 MONTHS!! Can you imagine not having your lap top for 2 months!
I won't shop at target either anymore because of their policies. i love wal-mart, they let you return anything for any reason, even if you don't have a reciept.

Man, where were you last night when we needed you?
That's scary about your laptop because my husband and I just bought a computer from them two weeks ago. So far it's working great. I really hope we don't have any problems. Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it!
Will you go shopping with us from now on?

in our country every payment made to an item that cost much, the one incharge of the item (the sales lady) will inform the buyer about the policy even it is written at the back of the receipt. i really don't why in your country did not explain what the policy, this is very important to maintain good relationship between the buyer and the seller if in case the buyer made any decision like what you've made to returned it an hour later. I they informed you about the policy and you already know that in returning the item you must wait 710 business days before you get the check by email. so why you returned back the item if you know the policy? their system lack of this program. hope they will improved their service and won't happen again to the next buyer.
thanks for the post.

Yes, they need a program like this here but that's some Americans for you, they do what they want without regards for anyone but themselves. Thanks for your post!

Wow, that is rediculas. I would have been so angry. They can't just keep your money like that. I can't believe that is even legal. I think if that is their policy then they should have to pay you interest on the money they are withholding from you.
I also don't believe that they did not have that amount of money in store. That is such a lie. I know from working at retail that at the very first thing in the morning every register is given at least $50.00 to start the morning off. At the end of the day they should have more than enough in the registers to refund under $300. I could see if it was first thing in the morning, but you said it was before closing, and you knew you gave them that money just a little while before you returned.
That is so wrong it is not even funny. I am certain that this "policy" is in place to get people to take their stuff with them and not attempt to return it. The whole policy is very dis-honest to me, especially when they don't even inform you of that at check out.
I will definately think twice about purchasing anything expensive from Best Buy using cash.
I am glad you were still able to enjoy your anniversary.

Exactly! It was like a half hour before they were closing and just a half an hour before or less we had purchased the camera. They had that money in the store. It did make me so mad.
What made it worse is when she handed me the camera she had the bag just letting it slightly hang from her fingers and far away from her, as if to say "too bad for you, now take your camera and leave", they didn't appologize, they didn't say have a goodnight, they didn't say anything. It was just a bad way to do business all around.
One thing I have noticed about Best Buy is that they have a lot of young teenagers working there and they girls that helped me were very young. In certain situations that doesn't really affect things but in this one it did. It was just wrong all around.
Thanks so much for your comment, I really appreciate it!

I am in between. I think that you should have been informed when you were buying the item, but I do check the back of the receipt, but only if I am going to return it, so that part it not too unreasonable. The fact they don't have that money in store is kind of stupid, since you bought it that day.

Well, you must be one of the few because everyone I know does not inspect the back of the reciept. Most reciepts have the store logo's printed on it and so, who thinks to check back there? Thanks!

In my opinion, I really believe that when the store was about to close, they did not want to stick around to do the necessary paperwork to do a refund. They could also have let you do an exchange and given you the difference back instead of the whole amount. Sounds like someone just wanted to get done and get out of there so they could go do whatever.

That is bogus. You shouldn't have to wait for a return on something you just purchased. Luckily for me, my husband is a tech buff that takes forever to decide what he wants so in the end we are satisfied with what we purchased. I'd write a note to the corp and say something about at least hanging a sign saying no cash returns on items blah blah.

That's not a bad idea, I just may do that. Thanks!
Actually, we took a while to pick out the camera because my husband and I are the same way, we want to make sure we are getting good quality but then after we left we decided that for now it was best to perhaps go with something cheaper and then get the more expensive one later but as you can see, we couldn't do that lol...
So, we are keeping the camera but it still made me mad but I think I may do what you suggested because I think people need to be warned about something like that before they make a purchase. I still think they shouldn't have to return an expensive item and walk out of the store with nothing but a small slip and wait 7-10 days for their money back. That's just not right in my opinion...
