How long til kittens are weaned?

April 27, 2008 10:09pm CST
My cat had her babies a couple nights ago. They're so cute! I'm sad because I'm gonna have to give most of them away. Anywho, how long does it normally take for kittens to be weaned? I had heard 6 weeks. Is that true?

Kittens usually will start eating food that is soft by 8 weeks. The thing about cats is that the mother cat makes the decision as to when she allows the kittens to start eating. I have seen where when forced to eat too early they will not, and can die from a failure to thrive situation. I have a feral cat colony of 30 or so and I can tell when the mother cat has decided because she will bring them out of hiding to the feeding plate and chirp to them to eat. I use kitten dry food that is soaked in a bit of warm water so it softens up when I see a mother bringing her kittens out. Good luck with your kittens.

And I almst forgot...no cows milk. It will give kittens diarrhea and they will become dehydrated very quickly. Use KRM (kitten replacement milk) if you feel really compelled to feed them milk. Older cats do better tolerating cows milk.

definetly 6-8 weeks! no sooner please! they still wobly on their little legs at 5 weeks, their eyesight is not comletely clear yet either. Give them a good fighting chance because the frightening part of giving these precious little bundles away is that no matter who you give them to...you have no guarantee that they will be taken good care of and given the nutrients and love they need to become strong enough to survive in this great big...cruel..world.

Thank you all for your thorough and informative responses. I'll be giving the kittens away to family members, so I'm pretty sure they'll be taken good care of.

On average it takes around 6 to 8 weeks for kittens, a friend of mine who works for a cat charity usually recommended 10 weeks to be certain. After that they should be weaned and independant enough to go to new homes.

They wean at about 6 to 8 weeks. When it reaches the point of weaning, make sure that you get food that is rich in vitamins so that the kittens have a good start. Check on line to see what is recommended to feed them when they are weaning. When you get a kitten food, get a good quality food so that they stay healthy. There are cheaper foods for kittens on the market, but I have found them less than satisfactory. Please, PLEASE don't just give them away. Many people that get their animal companions for free feel that since they got the animal for free they don't really need to take care of it as well as if they spent money for it. Ask for a token amount (remember that you have had to pay extra for food for the kittens and their mother...there is always extra expense for taking care of a family)and stick to that price. I usually ask between $10 and $25 for mix breed kittens simply to impress upon the new owners that they have an investment in the kitten. If you give the beautiful little babies away, you can't be sure of what kind of life they are going to have. (Not all kittens are as lucky as Willy and Khuay. I adopted them for free at WalMart last year. They are inside cats and are terribly spoiled. They even have their own screened patio that they are able to play and sun themselves in. It's about 300 square feet and has places to climb, hide, run and sleep in.) Give your kittens at least 6 weeks, preferably 8 or 9 weeks so that the mother can teach them to use the litter box and other things they need to know to take care of themselves.

The best time to wean is between 7 and 8 weeks of age but you also need to introduce cat food before they are weaned here is a great website on how to wean a kitten the right way it should be really helpful http://petcaretips.net/weaning_kitten.html I hope all your kitties do really well. I have two 4 month old kittens and I love them both very much.

Mine milked of the momma for 12 weeks and even up to 6 months they would try to get milk and the mother didnt mind. You only have to have them milk for about 6 weeks and after that you can start them on kitten chow.

I haven't had kittens in the house for many many years, but I would leave it up to the momma cat. She will know when her little ones are ready to be weaned. As was said, be sure to leave out food for the babies. I would use a good quality kitten food diluted with a little kitten milk to make a thick soup for them. Have a lot of fun with them. Handle them a lot if the mom lets you. It will help them be very used to humans.

Usually about 6 to 8 weeks, But when you start weening them you should start them on kitten food mixed with a little kitten milk, You can get it at walmart in the pet section or an pet store. let it get soggy that might help ween them closer to 6 weeks. As soon as there walking around and playing an exploring, set it out for them there noses should take them to it. once they hit a certain age there into everything, lol. good luck and have fun!!!!
