To Call Or Not To Call...

I see strays around all the time and as long as they don’t bother me, aren’t near a major road and they look fed and cared for I pretty much let them alone. If they’re sick, hungry, in danger or a danger to anyone else I’ll call the dogcatcher to come and pick them up. I figure they are better off in the pound where at least they are getting meals, medical attention and care. Besides some strays aren’t really strays at all but rather someone’s pet that managed to get out of the yard.
A couple weeks ago we had a beagle puppy out by our apartment. I know he belongs to the neighbor ppl in the house beside us and that he gets out once in a while. He doesn’t bother anyone and he’s just rather lively. Well, our apartment manager saw him and before I could tell her who he belonged to she had called the pound and demanded they come pick him up. She doesn’t like dogs by the way.
Well, I haven’t seen him in awhile so I don’t know if they picked him up or if the owners are keeping him at home more. I hope he’s ok.
Do you call the pound only when necessary? Why do you suppose some ppl don’t like animals? As an owner, would you be upset if someone called in your pet to the pound?

We don't have too much of a problem with stray dogs here, not that we see anyways. One of our neighbours lets their dog out all the time. Now this mutt is really bad tempered, and obviously abused. It has come into our yard a few times and tried to have a go at me. It has even been seen having a go at the children heading to school just across the road.
I'm guessing because I've not seen it for a while, someone finally put in a complaint and the dog has been permanently removed and hopefully put down (best thing for it really).
If everyone who owned a dog or cat was responsible with their pets, then there would be no need for animal shelters or for people to go and round up the strays. Sadly, more than a few animal owners think they can get away with mistreating the creatures in their care.

i will be very honest with you... i hardly encounter any stray animals in the place where i live now... i always go to work from monday to friday from morning to night and i am always inside the car... also, when i am not working, i spend my time at home resting... so i don't really know how to answer your question... i guess it is similar like you... if the animal is injured, then i will call the animal rescue organisation call RSPCA here to come and take it away... but if it is OK, i think i will just ignore it...

Nope-- I never call. We have animals show up at our house in the country every so often. 2 beautiful dogs wandered onto our land about 3 months ago- We fed them and played with them. They were there for a while- they mosied over to the neighbors and they put them in their garage and called the dog warden. It was probably a good thing to do- the owners came by and thanked us-- they went missing the day before- they were really cute.

Hey there well if you think you can help other wise the pound should be notified so they can then do some think about it.

I would only call the pound if I knew the animal was in seriouse danger and looked really sick health wise. Yes some people let their animals just wander and then when they come up missing start putting up signs whether in the paper or on a pole in public for every one to see. I like animals very much and it's hard to determine if they are ok or not. I personally do not let my cat go out he sits in the window and wants to so bad. I don't want to see this happen to my animal and if I did find him missing for a couple of days I would call the pound just to see maybe if he was brought there. Some people don't put name tags w/ a contact number on there animals collar. I know I should just incase my cat ever does get out that someone will have a number they can call me and say "we found your cat he's w/ us" and have him safely returned. I see these animals and want to help them especially in the winter when it's freezing cold out and they have no where to go. I hate to see them locked up in a cage but it's better than haveing them wander around and possibly get killed.

If I feel it's in the best interest of the animal, I will call the pound. Otherwise I leave well enough alone. If someone called the pound to come get one of my pets, I would be angry if they knew the animal belonged to me. Pets will sometimes get away from you, that's just the way it is. I always try to keep my pets close by, but luckily I don't have that problem where I live.

Yes I would be very upset, I think in common decency tell the owner first, bring the animal back to the owner is the right thing to do. I have returned animals to their owners a few times. That animal means nothing to the finder but everything to the people who lost it.

I never disliked animals, but I did go through a phase where I did not care for them much, one way or the other. I guess I was just too wrapped up in my self at the time. Anyway, I have never called the pound on any animal. The only way that I would ever do that is if the dog was attacking people.
I am one of those people that say live and let live. If dogs did not have to be confined, they would be pretty awesome pets. My nieces and nephews were feeding two dogs, at one time. But no one wanted to take responsibility for them. They named the dogs Tiger and Sammy.
They would walk with us, whereever we had to go and when we got home they would be there waiting. It is their nature to protect their owners. It becomes a truly special relationship.

I have never called the pound for any animal, including the cats that kept breeding in our neighborhood..I think the only time I would call is if I felt the animal was in need or dangerous...

Hi Twoey-it upsets me how many animals end up in the pound when its not nescessary-what really upset me was there is one person on my estate who doesn't like my dogs and is always complaining to the council about their barking and once he tried to get a petition up about the noise they made and to get them taken away from me-fortunatley not a lot of people did so he couldn't send it off-living on my own I do my best to stop them barking etc and most of the time keep them indoors now apart from taking them out for walks etc-everything seems to of calmed down the past year but the fear of what this man may do next is always there-it would devast me if ever god forbid my dogs were taken away from me-I cannot understand people who don't like animals-blessings littleowl

I have never called the pound and wouldn't unless there was a dire situation that warranted it.. I have taken in strays but never called in on them.. A lot of the time, they do belong to someone and have somehow gotten loose.. But the street where I live is like a race trac and I would call if I had found an animal running around this area, since there have been so many animals getting run over on my road.. My cat got killed on this road just after we moved in, (she was always getting out, so matter what I did to keep her in) it broke my heart so see her in the road, we buried her in our back yard with her own little white cross.. But as for my puppy, she is 4 yrs old, dog years, and she has never been out unless she was on here leash.. I would never let her out, but as for others dogs, I wouldn't call on them, unless it was a dangerous dog and I knew it to be dangerous.. We show what kind of people we are when we are taking care of our animals..

I would only call the pound if the dog/animal looked in dire need of nutrition and water. My dog ran away a few months ago, but we called the pound to let them know if someone took him in, it was our dog. In the 3 hours he was gone, we looked all over our neighbourhood trying to find him, expecting he would have gone only one way. Turned out they found him at a golf course across the busiest street in the city. I don't know HOW he managed to get across that street, but we are happy he was found without being hit by a car. That dog will run away if the gate is open. My other dog, on the other hand, will come to the door and bark if the gate is left open and will not leave for any reason. He actually looks both ways before crossing the street and keeps away from cars. If he isn't on a leash and we take him out front, he won't go past the end of the street. I would have to say Collies are VERY smart. My first dog I mentioned is smart but too curious for his own good.

I would be upset if my dog ended up that way. Of course I would not have a dog if I had to keep it outside. That is one reason why I have small dogs. I used to have a neighbor who kept a sweet lab on a chain in their backyard. He never did anything with the dog except feed it. That poor dog was scared of thunder and always got either tangled on his chain or broke off completely and ran around the neighborhood. The owner got some big fines for letting him run loose. Eventually I think the dog ran away and I hope that someone found him and adopted him rather than have the dog put to sleep.

If I see an animal with no collar who is friendly, I try to call a shelter that has a policy where they don't kill the animals. To me dogs need their vaccines and they deserve to have a home instead of being in the streets since they could be in danger.
