Last night we were all sitting in the living room and my SO put our dog down and said go to mommy. My daughter called her but she came right to me and jumped in my lap. She normally will not jump up on you without you saying ok get up. We looked at each other in surprise so we tried it again and I put her down and said go to dad. My daughter again called her but she went right to him and jumped up in his lap. Can a dog know a person by name? It really left us baffled.

YES any dog can remember people by names or sounds. I have always had pets, especially dogs of all breeds, from local ones ( thought to be very slow learners), and those of good breeds. All dogs recognize people around them when they listen to their names for quite sometime. My dog recognizes everybody in my home by names. He recongnizes my car horn and hears it from a big distance and I usually find him on my gate. I would say,"manu has come"(my son) and he would immediately go to search for him. One very interesting thing that I have noted is that this ability does not depend on breed of the dog. They are equally intelligent in this aspect.

I believe that some dogs are very smart and yes, they do know people by names. I have a Jack Russell Terrior and her name is Chyna. We will say, Chyna, go get andrew~ and she will run over and jump on my sons lap. We can do this for all 6 of us in our house and she knows who everyone is. It's fun to watch.

I think they know people by their names. We had a yorkshire terrier for about 12 or 13 years before she passed away and she knew people by their names. You could even mention one of our names and she would get all excited and start running around LOL. I guess maybe with her just hearing us say certain people's names she just started associating that name/sound with that face.

depending on how you train your dog, this could be happen if the dog is will train, supposedly dog acknowledge only if we call their name. i remember last day when i am out of my house for a dinner, along the way to the fast food chain, i saw a dog and called him not mentioning the name, he never mind my call but when i call his name he immediately respond and run near to me. he acknowledge his own name.

I think they can tell by the tone of your voice, what your saying to them. You probably don't realize it but when you tell your dog something, your tone changes when you say certain words, and I think thats how they know what your saying. Like if you tell them NO...you make your voice sound stern, and they know what it means when they hear you say it that way. I'm no dog expert, but thats what I think...

Dogs can learn to do commands, and of course they can learn the name of their owners and the children and relatives. The things is that a dog has no sense of time like we do, so in its mind, it learned the name on the same day, even if years had past. I think it explains why dogs who are lost wind up at their old home. My dogs knew my name, but being the stubborn kind -- well they were more or less interested in doing what they wanted. I had a dog if you wanted her to stay, you told her to go.

I don't know if they can but I think so. I have a cat and I think he knows who is who by name. When Jessica is away Baby knows when I am talking about her. He will look around for her. LOL So I think dogs can as well.

Yes I believe they can because we've had several dogs and they know us as mommy and daddy so if I were to say, "Daddy's home!" they'll get all excited and bark like mad! lol Or if daddy says, go to mommy, they will. However they don't know other people unless they're around them often. Our dogs know their grandma and grandpa too. All I have to say is grandma and/or grandpa and they go nuts!! My parents love my dogs or any dog so my dogs know them VERY well. lol

Yes. My mom's Shih Tzu has learned my name, and whenever anyone says to go get me he will race right in to where I am and get my attention. Or if he needs food or water, he'll go bark at my mom and she'll tell him to tell me, so he races in to where I am. We've told him to go to one or the other of my parents before as well, and he always goes to whoever he's told to go to.

Yes they sure do ;) My dog knows who is who by name too. He also knows quit a few words. For ex. if you say 'fly' he will run away to his basket because he's scared of them lol. He also knows what certain food mean.

Our dog was able to distinguish who is who, no problem. We'd tell the dog to go to someone, and she would, because she would recognize us talking to the other person, the other person responding, and the name we used for each individual.

I think so. They can learn their own name so I would think they could learn who is who. I know sometimes when I say I'm going to bed my dogs will jump and run to the bedroom before I ever move.

Sure dogs know. Our dawg knows which child is which, as well as me and my wife. She also knows her 'grandparents' and 'aunts and uncles'. If we tell her to go get our daughter, or son, she does it. If I need my wife, or she needs me, our dog will go to find us. I think they know, without any problem.

My dog Indigo knows our names. When my husband tells him to sit by mommy. He comes to me. And I tell him to go to one of my boys and he does. After living with us for 6 years. He should know the names of the people who love him.

I think that dogs (or any pets for that matter) know our names just as well as people do. I mean our pets probably know a lot more than we think they know. Our dog is just a puppy and she is still in that stage where the only thing she listens to is her name.

Hi, TriciaW, I think dog can't know us by our name, rather they can differentiate us based on our smell. And if it go to the right person and we praise it, sure it learn to identify that person.

I agree with you.Dogs used their smell power to know a person. Anybody from our home arrived silently at night, the dog didn't bark. But if different person do the same then the dog bark.
