I heard music and looked outside, sure enough it was the ice cream truck! I haven't seen one of them for a long time. I remember when I was little we knew the time he would be coming around our neighborhood. We always listened for that music and sometimes we got to get something. Most of the time, Mom had a popsickle or ice cream treat for us in the freezer though.

Yes, I do remember the Ice Crem Truck. They were not around when I was a child, but I am 56 years old. They did have alot of them when my children were growing up. seems that they could hear one of those things a mile away, they would come running in the house to get them some money to buy some ice cream. I am like you, I too have been seeing a few of them around again here lately. I think that the Ice Cream trucks are really a good thing for the kids. They get very excited when they hear that music start to play..

I'm 56 too, but I DO remember them from childhood. The Good Humor Man used to park his truck in our driveway and rang his bell so all the neighborhood kids would come a-runnin'.
We were the end of his route, so he'd often sell my mom whatever popscicles were left over for cheap. (I remember when they went from 5 cents, to 6 and then to 7!) She ended up with boxes of coconut popscicles because no one else bought them. Same with blueberry. I guess no one else liked them. :-)
When my son was a kid, we never lived anywhere where the ice cream man would come.
But here in the suburbs of Cincinnati, the ice cream man comes regularly on our street. Actually, there are 3 different trucks that come here, sometimes at the same time.
Sadly, the job of ice cream man is no longer a very good one. Last I knew, they don't make anything per hour, just 40% of what they sell. That's great if they're parked at a ball field or something. But in our neighborhood, for instance, the guy is lucky to sell one thing. (They are way overpriced now...)

When I was in high school, we also had the "ice ball man" who came around the neighborhood. This guy sold ice balls from the back of his car. Had the ice and all the flavorings in his trunk. They sure were good on a hot summer day. But I don't think you could get away with that today. Health/sanitation problems?

I remember those ice cream trucks too coming around our neighborhood in the summer months. Sometimes I even got to buy one and that was always an exciting treat! Now that I'm grown with grandsons that I live with, I rarely ever see or hear ice cream trucks anymore.

Those were the carefree summers of long ago. Now they don't have them and I sure miss the music. I remember my first Lab I got for my b-day. He learned quick when the ice cream truck would be coming and pester my mom to no end till she let him out to go meet the truck for his icecream treat. lol

Oh yes!
I haven't seen one around here since moving to Ohio, but I'm sure they are still around, just not in my area.
When I was in NC we had one that came around periodically and my husband and I walked out to treat ourselves and I about had a fit and told him to take it back. The simple ice cream on a stick was almost $5 - I was stunned!
I know it's always more expensive when you buy something like that, but I honestly couldn't believe that price. I wonder why so high? Insurance fees, maybe?

Yes, ice cream truck is a good memory, but there are less and less.
Actually what's really good is the feeling we had in childhood of buying and tasting the ice cream. The taste in memory seems to be the best we ever had.

How odd!!! I just finished reading your discussion, and the ice cream truck came up the Street, playing it's merry little tune! Is there something psychic going on around here? Not only that, he's parked smack outside my home! lol.
Also, yesterday was my nephew's thirtieth birthday party, in his partner's parents' large garden. Storm, the partner, had arranged all the party and entertainment, and had arranged for an ice cream truck to call in during the afternoon, supplying all the guests with an ice cream, which she subsequently paid for. It was real fun to have the ice cream truck park in the drive... the kids loved it!
Brightest Blessings, and please don't spook me like this again!

Yeah, we've one that travels around town in the summer. It's funded by a dessert company, which also sells frozen pies and cakes and such.
^_^ maybe they're making a comeback? =D
That'd be pretty awesome I say.

Hi there Sherry!
That sounds like fun! I haven't experienced buying ice cream from the ice cream truck. We only have ice cream carts here in the Philippines.

Hi There,
I remember how that sound always excited me when I was a child as well. I am fortunate that my children were able to feel the same thing as the ice cream truck still comes around our neighbourhood. They are older now and it does not excite them the same way but it always brings good memories for all of us.
cheers,

I grew up in Cornwall, Ontario. They didn't have ice cream trucks then but they did have the chip trucks. They would travel all over the city selling fresh home cut french fries. It never failed they always made it to our place right around supper. We would drive my mother crazy wanting one. Then when my own kids were growing up it was my turn to go nuts. When the kids heard the bell ringing from a few blocks away, our home turned into a mad house.

The ice cream truck brings back such a good memory of childhood. The music, the excitement.

I like the ice cream truck when I was younger. That sounds mean I can buy ice cream again. Normally, I'll save up few pennies just to buy my favorite ice cream as my mum don't allow me to eat many of it. So, if I buy with my own money, she'll allow me to buy.

Yes! When we lived in town and the boys were little we had an ice cream truck. When they would hear the music they would come screaming in the house, "Mama, where's our money! The ice cream truck is coming!" Of course, they had worked hard for money to spend on the ice cream so I would have it ready for them. It was so exciting to see their excitement! Thanks, Sherry, for bringing that precious memory up. God bless!

I remember those from when I was a kid, and we have them in our neighborhoods around here now. There are a few people here who drive the trucks into some of the neighborhoods here, and they do quite well from what I hear. Unfortunately, a few of them have given the honest ones who drive these trucks a bad name. A select few of them have been charged with child molestation and other similar charges. This is yet another example of how the actions of only a few people can give other honest working people a bad rap...

Here in the UK the summer brings the ice cream men out in force.I was on the phone chatting to my daughter the other day,the weather had been lovley that day...and our grandaughter had had a lolly on the way home from her school...well in the background I could hear the tinkle of his van..and then I heard Our grandaughter rushing in to ask her Mum could she have another ice cream...in the end it was a compromise..she had a small cornet...my daughter said to me if she had one everytime that the van came around she would have a good few in a day!!!

When I was growing up, we had the original 'Mister Softee' visit our neighborhood several times a day in the summer. Now that we've moved out of that area and over to Staten Island, we have a legion of 'lickety split' ice cream trucks. Their ice cream tastes horrible but the kids around here swear by it. I'm thinking Staten Island kicked out Mister Softee and created a monopoly with these lickety split trucks!
