It's Too Darn Hot, And I'm Melting Here!

Oh, joy...the NYC area, as well as most of the Northeastern area of the US is going through their first torturous heat wave and it began on Saturday. Just the Friday night before I was basking to the coolness of the mid-60s weather...The next day we were hit with mid-90s...Sunday wasn't much better and today it's 96 degrees..what's worse is I don't have AC (heck couldn't afford it anyway)--I feel brain dead, no motivation and all I want to do is to fill my tub with cold water and stay in it...LOL, but then I couldn't get any work done. So are you being affected by this lovely HOT weather, and in weather like this do you have any motivation to do anything or do you sit like a zombie? How do you keep cool?

pft..RI's got the same weather..and 95 also.this humidity bites bigtime.i tried working on the yard today, got in maybe 3 hours before it got unbearable.been chasing kitties with wet cloths all day, though i get the ick face from them (better than being hot, kiddo).for the life of me i don't know why they won't sit near the fan, especially blackums.

I didn't even go out at all today, save to take down the garbage and get the mail...Hmmm...I don't think my kitties would appreciate their mom trying to wet them down either...I don't know why my kitties don't sit near the fan either...my one Kissy is under the bed, and Pyewacket is in the traveling case..weird

I'm just a few hours south of you and it's hot here too (duh). We don't have AC either. Well, I have it in my room but I don't use it until about an hour before bedtime. I leave it on to get the room cool and then turn it off and keep the door shut to save on energy. I do a little less than normal because it's so hot, but I'm not in a zombie state quite yet. I'm fine with the heat; I'm just worried about my pets.

My goodness you have a regular zoo there...LOL. Yes I'm guessing the snake and tarantula don't mind this whether..do you still need the heat lamps on them since I know snakes in particular have to have a certain temperature to survive

How many pets do you have? I have two kitties and I'm always adding ice cubes to their water...nope can't take the heat at all..I'm a winter person...and we didn't even have much of a winter here.

I have a dog, cat, rabbit, snake, tarantula, and a fish. So I guess that makes six. My dog spends her day lying underneath a chair to keep cool and I've started putting half filled frozen water bottles in my rabbit's cage to keep him cool. The snake and tarantula and snake like it hot so they're fine and the cat just runs off and lies in the shade.

hi pye, i am having a huge headache for 2 days now coz of the very hot and humid temperature out here. our AC is non-stop and i have to shut off all the blinds just to keep our home cool. i think the reason why i am having a headache is because it is 70 inside and when i have to bring our dog out it is 102 so my head is really frying and i am having a hard time breathing and concentrating. yesterday was 100 and last saturday is 101 same as friday, it was amazingly hot and yes motivation is nowhere - i cant imagine your situation without an AC it is miserable as i experienced that before (wish i can be as naked as i can be but oh well LOL) my dog dont seem to enjoy outside as well, he is behaving funny as he seem to force himself to do all his business outside as fast as he can and come back home and be outside late at night. he usually wants to go outside like 24/7 hehe but now he is rushing to go back home coz of the humidity as well as the high temperature. we are thinking of camping next week but will have to postpone that coz we will just be agonizing in our tent if that is the case. i am just at home all day, except if i have to walk my dog out, other than that i am cooling myself with ice tea and fresh strawberries yumyum! hope you feel better soon, love the idea of staying in the bathtub but i cannot afford that much water haha. takecare

I didn't even go out today save to empty the garbage, and get my mail..LOL...oh, and iced tea...yikes if I drink anymore liquids I swear I'm going to float and I have some ice cream...that seems to melt almost right away.. That's funny about your dog...he sounds like even he has sense not to be out to long in that weather..LOL

hahaha, ice cream is a great idea if i am as skinny as i used to be i am scolding myself for gaining 20 lbs. in just 2 years geezzz. my hubby asked me out and i swear our car feels like an oven inside i checked the temperature and it says there it is 103, i swear it feels hotter than that. LOL he seems to test the hotness by stepping his toes first and if he doesnt like what he feels he is ready to go inside, i said this coz after i wrote my response to you this afternoon he wants to go to the porch and when i let him out he just tapped the floor with one paw and then look at me and then go inside again i was laughing coz of that hehe. anyway, hope it is a little cooler there now since it is night time i will sleep early coz i am still having this huge headache. takecare

To avoid from hot hot summer, the only way is to have cool drinks and have cool water bath and wear pure white cloths and if you are at home cover your windows and doors with white curains, where ever cloth is used make it white. And mostly if your house is only one floor or you stay on top floor then you can have some paint which keeps your roof cool, this paint you can get it from paint shop, which can be painted on your terece. If you cannot afford for A/c then go for some coire curtains so you can water them frequently and cool breeze will come out of it.This is how we in India try to keep ourselves cool.

I haven't had curtains up in ages, but do have white color blinds I have pulled down to keep out the sun...also I do live in an apt on the second floor...I feel sorry for those on the third floor as they get more heat from the roof

Man, what excellent advice on keeping cool you give chinnu! It made me cooler just reading your post!!! If this were my discussion I would give you the Best Response award immediately!! I would love to have some of these coire curtains! I will take advantage of the modern world that I live in and look it up online, hehehe. There is an actress here in America by the name of Darryl Hannah who uses as a couch a big, moss covered rock that was on her property. She says she has to water the moss! I think that is very funny to have to water your couch! I bet it helps keep her place cool though! So Darryl Hannah can water her couch and I will water my curtains!! Thank you for the excellent tip!

what!? it's about 50 in the northwest. around this time of the year, the northwest is GORGEOUS.. at any rate, you could turn up the AC and do low-key activities, like reading, surfing on the net.. talk about life w/ your buddies over drinks.. haha.

I'm in Montreal, and the weather has been unbearable since friday!! It's been around 95-100 and with humidity, felt like 110!! You don't even move and you're sweating bullets!! Thank God, we got an AC on sunday, 12 000 btu...then our house was cold! With an almost 5 months old baby though,we gotta watch out and not make it too cold, or else he'll get sick.

Oh dear! That does sound miserable. Today we got a dose of that same weather. I don't know how close to 100 degrees we got, but it felt darn close! Too close for comfort. Most days I simply take a shower and then stand in front of the window air conditioner. Not much else to do. We don't have central air conditioning. Gotta run, the munchkin wants more apple! Be well.

OMG that soooooooooo sucks! I feel your pain we're having that same heat wave down here too. And on the hottest day so far the freakin AC went out and it took the apt maintenance 2 days to fix it and that was with us calling them 24/7 and finally just going and planing ourselves in their office until they had no choice but to come fix it. I thought I was going to die! Even the poor cat got a little sick from the heat. I hope things cool down for you ASAP!! By the way, have you tried going to one of those organiztions where you can get a free AC and fans?

That would be a great idea for me to find a place that has freebie AC units..the main problem...the cost of running it...I hear people's electric bills go up to about $200 a month...that would be WAY too much as I'm on SSI benefits.

It's also hot east of New York City. I wanted to mow the lawn yesterday early evening , just before it got dark, but we ended up with thunderstorms, & it rained pretty hard too. That time is when the grass is dry, & it's also cooler, & I can see where I'm going with the lawn mower. Usually, things do cool off after a thunderstorm, but not this time. Uh - is it your presence in the Patterson-land area (formerly known as Spitzer-land) causing these high temperatures? I kind of think so.

This is the second discussion in a row I've responded to about it being hot. I really love the summer, it's my time of year but I could do without it being this hot and humid. I feel for you without AC, that's one thing I couldn't survive without it especially for sleeping. It's supposed to get a bit cooler where I am after tomorrow, so I hope it does for you, too! Annie

Well the sunshine state didn't let me down again. Today was another scorcher. I was on a metal roof building on to add yet even more metal to an already 140 foot long steel structure, and across the road is a bank,(you know the kind) the one that has this big sign out front that shows the time and temperature. Well lets just say I was melting already but here is this sign teasing me by showing me that it is 102 degrees out. Now you can imagine how hot it is at that degree, but can you imagine being on top of a metal roof that is painted white how much hotter it is there? If I was to guess you can add about another 20 degrees to that. So today was a scorching 122 degrees where I worked for over 9 hours. All I can say is thank the man who made A/C in the vehicles....LOL

122 degrees??? Yikes...oh, but don't you just love it when the weathermen not only tell you what the temperature is, but give the heat index as to what the temperature really feels like....like do we need that extra info? WE KNOW IT'S HOT

It was just as hot here in Pittsburgh . I was out by the pool most of the day and swimming . I should of stayed in and relaxed , because I got some mad sunburn that is killing me. The pool did help to cool me off though , and it was nice coming in to the AC in the house. stay cool and happy posting

There are things you can do. What type clothes are you wearing? Silk or cloth with a sheen will deflect the sun and make it abit more comfortable. Do you close up your house or apt.? Open it when it cools down at night. Turn your fan or airconditioner on during the hot part of the day (10a.-4p). Carry some wetcloths with you and use them to refresh yourself occasionally. Make sure you are well hydrated.

I prefer wearing cotton type clothes and light colors to deflect the sun's rays. I only have one fan now..my window fan conked out..groan..but I never had it blowing in, but out to take the hot air out...and I do drink gallons of liquids...mainly iced tea or just plain water
