Do you leave things lying around, lying open?

I'm a bit disorganized. I forget to close open cupboards, forget to put things back from where I took them, leave things around, leave the fan running when I'm not there in the room... etc, etc , etc.... the list goes on.
Now that I'm married I'm a little better, but still far from perfection. Am I the only one on mylot like that? Do I have company.
Do you know any way of getting rid of this careless habit?

No, you are NOT alone. I am similar, but not as bad to leave doors/drawers open... that can be dangerous!
There's a great website that can help you organize your life, no matter what stage of MESS it may be in... it's called
www.flylady.net
Give it a GREAT SITE!!! I do house cleaning AND organization for people, so I have seen lots of people like you. In fact, I am dealing with one right now... a cluttered, dirty mess. So far, I have spent 12 "man-hours" simply WASHING (you can't DUST) the kitchen, living room, 1 bathroom, and the hallway/stairs. We still have the dining room, bedroomS, and another bedroom to go... BEFORE we even begin to ORGANIZE the place!

I'm not like that but several people in my house are and I have to go behind them cleaning up their trail or else it will never get done. Or in some cases, they'll have to go clean up their own trail and then they'll complain because they think someone else did it.
I think the best thing to do is just to remember to do it while you're at it. If you get a plate out of a cupboard, close the door. Plain and simple. Just start making it a habit and it will start to stick.

I am far from being a 'neat freak', but I don't leave cabinet doors open, for the simple fact, it bugs me. I may leave something laying around, or not put back something I had out, but at least once a day I go around and pick up things and put them away. I don't leave on extra lights, fans, etc, cause I'm the one who pays the utilities! lol, so in order to keep the bill low, I just have gotten in the habit of glancing around whatever room I am leaving and turn off lights or fans or whatever, unless of course I'm coming right back to that room. My house is not the cleanest on the block probably, but I don't like a messy house either. When I look around my home and figure that I wouldn't be embarrased if someone stopped by unannounced, then I'm okay with it. I also like having it picked up for me. It's just me and my s/o, so there really isn't a lot to do, other than picking up after him, which I'm lucky enough to have a guy that will put his dirty clothes in the hamper LOL

Lol! Hi pitstop! No, you are definitely not the only one. My room is very messy to my mom, and I always get scolded by her. I also left electrical appliances on sometimes, forgetting to switch it off and got nagged..
Well, now I'm better because of my family problems lol. I start to think about the extra cost on the electrical bills and how much inconvenient it will bring to my family. Like when I did not close the refrigerator door properly, all the food inside will be spoiled; if I didn't keep my room neat (than it used to be), I will get nagged big time and nobody likes to be nagged =P

Oh God thank you!!! I thought I was the only one that was such a scatterbrain. I have gotten better at turning things off when I am not in a room, but I do forget about the cabinets frequently, and I tend to leave a trail of things when I am doing something, especially when I am engrossed in something that involves the computer. We have a glass-top stove, and I even leave the eye on occasionally when I am done cooking. I usually catch that before I leave the kitchen. If you find a way to solve this problem please let me know!!!

Hello pitstop.
I'm not super organized but still, I make sure that our house looks neat. At least almost everything is in their right places. Now, it's my husband who is a little messy.I usually, see his things lying around somewhere wherein they don't belong. So, I put these things where they are supposed to be because my husband tends to forget where he last these items.
I applaud you though for making an effort to be a little more tidier now that you're married. That is a big plus to your wife. And I'm sure she appreciates what you do. You may not be that too perfectly organized but at least you're doing your part.
Just put yourself in your wife's shoes. She is the one who picks up after you. And just think it will make her very happy to see you helping her. In a way that she regularly sees you making a conscious effort to be a little more organized.
If you want, you can take a step back and survey a room in your house. Look if there's anything that seems to be out of place. And I assure you, once you make a regular habit of doing these things, your wife will be very appreciative.
My husband is still a little bit messy but I can see that he's trying to do his part. And I truly appreciate that.

If I was in her place, I would be patient, too. Especially when I can see that you're doing your best to be a little more organized with things. It just shows that you respect her feelings by doing the things that you're certain will make her happy.

I always try to put things back because I believe I might not find them the next time if I don't know where to look.
I got my tiddiness habit from my grandmother who used to insist that we children be neat and tidy.
She, by the way, was the epitomy of tiddiness.
Everywhere I go I meet untidiness. You should see the office I work in. There's been several injunctions from the bosses about keeping desks tidy, not that it makes a very big difference.
Its a good habit to have. You lose a lot less things and you always know where to find something.
It will take some effort, though.

Omg, I have seen some work areas and desks that drive me crazy, for the simple fact I don't see how they know where anything is or get any work done. I do scrapbooking, and I may leave a page out on my work space that I am working on, but if I didn't keep all my tools and embellishments organized, I'd spend more time looking for stuff that I would enjoying my hobby.

I have a tendency to leave cupboard doors open and not put things back where they belong. I don't however ever forget to turn things off or lock doors. I don't like to waste electricity and I don't like things open for anyone to walk into. My husband is worse than me. He leaves things out constantly and he leaves lights on in rooms he walks out of and he forgets to close the garage door and turn off the light in the garage and he also forgets to lock doors. It gets kind of annoying. I feel like his mother nagging him to turn off the lights. He should know better by now but nothing has really sunk in. I don't really know how to get rid of this habit other than just try to remember next time. I tell my husband that but it doesnt work with him. Maybe it will work for you. Also, maybe put a little post-it up to remind you.

I think I was more carless with messes when I was a kid because most times it was like 2nd nature for my mom to see a mess and just clean it , or close an open cupboard.I sometimes will leave the coffee pot still on and my cup still on the table with a moring dish . For the most part I try to right away clean up after myself . It will bulid up and it just has became like 2 nature to me now to do it . My fiance is always leaving doors to all rooms open and leaving things all over the place . He must have a few pairs of shoes just laying around the whole living room , and the worse thing is he will put them on top of the coffee table like the are a decor . What the heck you know
My finace gets mad at me because I sometimes will leave the tv on upstairs or not lock the back porch door . Those are the things I do and he is the on who will make the mess .Ugg, he even leaves things outside and misplaces things and rebuys. well I will end there or this will go on .
Have a good rest of the day

I am a forgetful person as well. but sometimes when i knew where are the items that i have placed on the table or so, eventually, the things gone missing and it's due to my mum who loves to clear my things by treating them as junks. and i wonder whether am i really that forgetful or just because of my mum's actions.

My biggest pet peeve is to see open cabinet doors or kitchen drawers left open. My daughter drives me to the brink of my sanity wih this. My only clutter bug is tabletops if there is a tabletop available I manage to clutter it up big time. I don't even realize I am doing it. One day I have it all cleaned up the next minute I can't see the top again.
