What do you do when you spot a stray?

Of late my daughter has been bringing back stray cats that she picked up anyway. These stray cats have created a settlement in my home which is giving me tension. I am no cat lover and have tried to starve them by not giving them food to make them go but instead they hang around my legs, chasing me wherever I go. I talk over with my daughter to release or give away to the neighbors but she insist on adopting them. I wish that there is a place for 'orphaned animals".

Please be kind to these animals. Do not try to starve them. The best thing to do is to try to find homes for them after they are spayed or neutered. There are groups in almost every city in the United States that will help with spaying/neutering and some with adoptions. This is a very big world we live in. Even if you don't like cats, please help get them to a good home where they will be loved. There are lots of people who do love cats. I am proud of your daughter for wanting to help these defenseless little creatures. Please find them good homes. If you let your daughter keep any, please get them spayed or neutered so there won't be more unwanted cats with no place to go.

Sorry momiecat, I know you love cats. It is not that I don't like pets but of all animals, I dislike cats most. I am a dog lover as dogs can be taught to obey instruction. I am trying to find good homes for these cats.

I am sorry you dislike cats so much. I am just saying please do not be mean to them. I am glad you are trying to find homes for them. I hope you have resources where you live to help the cats get spayed or neutered. I hope you let your daughter develop a love for all animals. The world needs more good people to be responsible for any animal, including dogs and cats, to get them spayed/neutered so there will not be as many homeless animals.

Do you have anyplace nearby that will spay and neuter street cats for a reasonable amount of money? If you do you can sterilize them them and let them live outside in your garden. Feed them outside. I they are outside, they won't be under your feet. Have your daughter work for the money to do it. Explain to her it is part of the responsibility of caring for the cats. By altering them they won't breed and cause more problems. My town doesn't have anywhere for stray cats either. It's a problem. We have a dog pound, but none for cats.

I'm not a cat lover either. I love dogs though. I would not take in a stray dog or cat anymore. I cannot afford it. Cats do not like me anyway either. I think I would get rid of the cats also. I would take them and drop them off somewhere and hopefully someone else would care for them. We don't have a place for stray animals either.

I do love dogs too but not cats. Their droppings are vomit inducing. I prepared sand toilet for them but they seems to make my life difficult by not going to their special toilet. They prefer to be in the house. My dogs are too fierce for them.

They don't HAVE to be in the house. They can learn to live outdoors but to starve them is just NOT right! Put them outside and don't let them in but also FEED them while finding them good homes. Don't starve them for that's so cruel! They can get used to your dogs and your dogs can get used to them with your help. Don't let your dogs torment them, correct them if they bother the cats. Also, cats have claws and can defend themselves however, a dog can get angry enough to hurt or kill them so correct the dogs so they'll understand they can't be bothersome to the cats.

The same goes for you!!!! I'd like to take you off somewhere and drop you off to fend for yourself!!!! How cruel that would be to do that to these poor innocent souls who ask for very little and give so much!!!! All they want is some food and hope for some love!!!! Is that so hard to give???? I can understand that not everyone is an animal lover to either cats or dogs or both but to be cruel to them is NOT the answer!!!! Finding homes for them is!!!! Getting them fixed is!!!!

You're just like my mom.She hates animals except fishes. But anyway, she has no control over animals since me and my siblings love animals especially dogs and cats. She hates animals so she doesn't give a damn about them and sometimes,my dogs end up not eating for the day since me and my siblings are always away and we though they have been fed.Now I've learned my lesson to check up on my pets.By the way, there is an adoption center in our country.I'd love to adopt a new pet since my pets are getting old and are expected to leave us sooner or later. My siblings and I take stray cats home and really take good care of them.

After reading all the responses, I can see I don't have to preach to you about animal cruelity. Only thing you can do is keep them outside, maybe with access to a shed or something for shelter, and feed them there instead. Spaying/neutering is a must thou or you will end up with more and more cats. Good that you are trying to find them homes as well. Seems your daughter's soft spot for cats needs to be curbed somewhat as well. Nothing wrong with loving and wanting to rescue all the stray cats but if your not set up to do so, then not a good idea for her to be bringing them all home or letting them wander into your house. I feel the reason some are wandering in is because the other cats are 'telling' them that you house is a great place to be with lots of food and shelter. I'm wondering how many of the cats are actual strays. Some could be other peoples pets and your daughter thinks they are strays. We get alot of cats around here and oftentimes have to talk to neighbors to figure out which ones are strays and which ones aren't. I get the feeling most are indeed strays/feral cats being they hightail it the minute they see anyone. Had only one in the 7yrs we have been here actually come up to me and it ended up being a neighbor's cat that snuck outside on him.

You are so right about cats finding a new master when they don't like their current one. My SIL would always end up losing her cats and never figured out why. I finally broke down and told her one day that she's cruel to them and, therefore, are finding themselves new owners who will take proper care of them. She never takes them to the vet if sick or feeds them decent food or gives them the attention they so crave so, they disappear on her never to be seen again. None of my cats ever had an excuse to find new homes themselves. The all love living here despite the fact I have a dog who thinks all cats like to be pawed and chased. Big clumsy paws can seriously hurt a cat despite his good intentions.

Cats normally seek refuge where they can find food always. i am not at all that cruel to these animals but just want to highlight what am I going to do with these fast multiplying stray cats. If I would have been that wicked they would have gone by now. The fact that they are still around and breeding uncontrolled means I still have the heart of a human who believes in karma.Cats are sensitive creatures and if they don't like the master they will leave to find a better place.

Sadly theres nothing I can do. There are a lot of stray animals in the city where i live, and apart from feeding them sometimes I really can do nothing more. There is no good stray animals policy here :(

In most cities there are organizations that will take stray cats, so just look in your phone book, dont starve cats, thats mean, and dont take them and justdump them as they will likely be run over or otherwise killed. If nothing else go to your nearest veterinarian and they can direct you ro people who will take care of orphan cats. I cannot imagine anyone really hating a cat. wow.Myself I would love to have a cat but they are not allowed in our apartment complex.

Ok, first things first, starving the cats is not an answer. Your daughter is obviously a very kind person but you can come to a compromise with her. Talk to her and tell her that you are willing to adopt one or two of the animals and that she should find good homes for the remaining. Second, regarding the vomit-inducing smell from their toilet.. actually cats are the easiest animals to toilet train.. just pick up their poo and put it in the litter tray. You'll only have to do this a couple of times and they'll understand that that's where they should be going for their toilet. Just remember that you, as a parent, need to set a good example on your child and starving or dumping poor defenceless animals isn't setting a good example!

I agree with you on this. you can toilet train cats but if they keep multiplying the house will be full of their droppings and their urine is horrible. I can tell you my budget has gone mostly on disinfection liquid. I can no longer waste my money on these unnecessary item. Cat are smart creatures, they are good hunters and can survive hunting for birds or squirrels. They can fend for themselves. When they are hungry they will know where to find their food.

If it's a cat I'm bringing it home. A dog.......I'm calling the man! I don't like stray dogs. Once I went out to dinner and saw a stray kitten. I was confused as to if to skip dinner and take the kitten home.

Oh my starys, they are so wonderful as pets they really appreciate it when you rescue them. I and my family always do this no matter what it is. We have ytaken in so many babies from the street. We have kept many and found good hoomes for others. It also depends on whether they need to go to a rescue mission for wild life. They help them until they can set them free. I will help some if I can, but if they need more than what I can do I take them to a rescue. At least I now they care and will take care of them and help with their needs. They even keep them if they can't be turned back out to be with their kind.

Oh my thank you but I have enough from the ones here. I usually have many wild cats and babies to feed. I catch the mommies or any I can and have them fixed as to stop or slow down the breeding. They usually wonder off or some other wild thing gets them. But I feed what comes up. People I believe have dropped many off. I have and still do feed possums, turtles and even a baby bear. I love the deer and rabbits that hang around.

You want to know how I feel? HOW DARE YOU BE SO CRUEL!! That's exactly how I feel!! Cats have feelings!! How would you feel if you were one of them and they starved you?!?! Not good at all I assure you! They didn't ask to be born!!!! They didn't ask to be born a cat!!!! Nor did they ask for your daughter to take them in!!!! I'm glad your daughter has a heart but she has no idea how cruel minded her mother is!!!!! I wish I lived near you for I'd be more than happy to take them ALL in!!!! They're loving little creatures if you'd give them the time of day!!!! Learn to open up your heart and you just might learn that!!!!!!

Sorry CatsandDogs, you must be a real animal lover. I only wish to keep one cat and not too many. Not all the cats are taken in by my daughter but few just walk in the house to look for food. They have overstayed in my house and would not leave even if I don't feed them. There are 20 cats right now. I feel I am living in a zoo with all these animals around me. I love dogs and I have 5 obedient dogs with me.

I would be concerned too because you do not want it to lead to hoarding cats and 20 cats certainly sounds like grounds for infestation as cats breed all over the place and their urine smell is VERY hard to get rid of any your neighbors will not appreciate it either. You can contact the SPCA and maybe they will come out and talk to her and offer to spay and neuter them becuase there is so many they wouldn't want to come back for 100 cats later on. They could probably convince her to turn them over and obviously she is not able to make that decision alone its worth giving them a call. Your house is your property and its not cool to let the cats take it apart--just tell her over and over she is not doing these cats any favors not giving them homes.

Well, if you really have a problem with these animals, then stop letting your daughter bring them home, for one. There is a place for orphaned animals...it's called the animal shelter. If you want to get rid of them, pack them up and bring them to the shelter. They'll most likely be put to sleep if homes can't be found for them. If you don't want to do that, you could make flyers to find homes for the cats. Do these things, but don't starve them because you don't like them and you won't tell you daughter that she can't bring cats home.

I'm assuming you don't live in the US? Because here we have shelters for stray animals. In whatever country you live in you don't have animal control or places for stray animals? Its a shame that you have to starve them. I hate to hear of that happening. If you don't find some way to have them spayed and neutered you will have a huge number of cats before long.

Well then let them at least be outside so they can at least attempt to hunt for their dinner. I see by a few of your other posts where you had said you had them indoors and were starving them there. Others have yelled at you enough here for your view, I won't add to it. If you don't like cats, then don't be letting the child bring them in to you to kill by starving them. Thanks.

I have stray problems, too, and raccoons, skunks and the like, all vying for the cat food I used to put out. But I've had to keep the food INSIDE to discourage them and the other wildlife from their nocturnal visits. Your daughter needs HELP! She is fast becoming a "hoarder," and this is a psychological problem which is going to cause heartache for the cats as well. PLEASE get her some HELP. Is there NO HUMANE society or Animal Control where you live???? There are SO many rescue organizations which can help relieve your kitty-load, and find them new, loving homes. Call your local law enforcement or town/city hall, they will be able to refer you.

My daughter is a loner. She find solace in animals. We don't have a center that housed stray animals. the nearest I can get is the government vet. department but again they do not have this kind of service to house stray cats. If you insist on them they might come to collect but at the end of the day they will put these animals to eternal rest by jabbing. I might be relieved of them going but the thought of them being treated this way will haunt me.
