If You Were Given One Hour To Grab Items For Free At The Supermarket...

Remember the old TV gameshow "Supermarket Sweep"?
Till this day, I don't see how ANYBODY could lose that contest, and I'll guess it's because I have a natural calculator for groceries and what what they cost in my head...
Well anyways, I used to dream (Still do) about being let loose in my favorite Supermarket or boxstore for an hour to grab whatever I wanted for free! :)
I have a feeling that I could easily walk out of there with at least $5000.00 worth of goods, especially with prices the way they are these days!
That's probably the average cost of six months groceries and the gasoline to haul them home! I'm just kidding here of course, but I'm beginning to wonder where these price increases will end all the same.
Now back to my Foodie Fantasy Question...
If you had just one hour to shop as fast as you could and grab as many items as you wanted for free at your favorite Supermarket or Boxstore (Like Aldi's or Costco)
How would you do?
Here's a few numbered choices to help you start your answers:
1. I'd Hurt 'em, because I am a Shopping Tornado and...
2. I'd grab only durable goods and no treats because...
3. I'd stock up on all the luxury items that I could get because...
4. I'd probably just get a lot of the same items that I do in my normal shopping because...
5. I'd probably get scared and confused and really blow it because...
6. I'd have to bring one of my relatives to make all of my choices for me because...
Your answers should be as much fun as possible, and of course the more detailed the better! :)
Here's an expenses tracker for all of you brave and funny folks out there:

And a link to my blog, where you can play the "Millionaire " game for free! No log in required, just dust off your trivia mid and play!

Have BIG FUN with this one! :)

I think I'd grab a lot of the fresher food items. Less of the boxed items and more of the stuff that we can throw together a lot of different stuff and make really good meals. I'd probably also stock up on the stuff that we use a lot that tends to add up eventually. I'm not sure what else I'd grab, maybe some cleaning products or something.

Professionals always think of the Pantry as the heart of cooking... Staples and Spices, mixes and fixings are the Soul of Good Food...
Here's a Recipe Calculator that can show show you what you can do with whatever you have on hand in your Pantry right now! :)

That's a good list and method, too, Highflyingangel! :)
If you work that hour right, you can eat well for a couple years! :)

I think stocking up on the stuff we use the most would be great. It would end up cutting down on our costs and we could have more money to buy other food items.

As much as I'd be tempted to go for the produce and dairy departments, those items will expire quickly and can't be frozen. Too bad because those are the more expensive items and the things I eat most - eggs, yogurt, fruit. But my family goes through a lot of cereal (not me). I would get cereals, probably laundry and cleaning products, meats of course, and then anything already frozen like pizzas, fruit punches, pre-cooked meals or meats (burgers, meatballs, lasagna), and breads. Unfortunately I don't think I have the space to store all this stuff.
I wouldn't think they would give you a whole hour to do this kind of a game show prize... more like ten minutes. If they gave me an hour to dash around the store I would probably need to juggle several shopping carts.

You would make out better at a boxstore, Pat! :)
You could then get a freezer or two for your vittles, or move to Edmonton, which has it's own built in freezer! LOL! :)

10 minutes at the right store could do it, if you are quick and decisive, this feature however seems to be missing in a lit of the shoppers around here...
Have you ever been on queue in the supermarket when a persons gets their trun at the register, and they have to go back to the shelves in the middle of checking out to get an item that they forgot?
They'd fail at this game! LOL!

1. Laptop
2. The latest IPHONE
3. Best available perfumes(and the costliest)
4. The latest IPOD
And guess what would I do, come out of the store and sell all the items at half price when the contest was over....heeheehee.

Hi peaceful!
I would have to bring along someone too if I had that kind of hour in the supermarket. LOL and with the increasing prices of goods today, like what you said, it’ll be a great help to ease the burden in budgeting. ^__~ if I had that kind of hour, I would be getting a lot of food, from fresh meat to vegetables, fruits, and also junk foods and canned goods. LOL aside from food, I’d be getting a lot of personal supplies like soap, shampoo, lotion, deodorants, and stuffs. And then, I’d be getting a lot of colognes! ^__~ I like to have a lot of different colognes. I don’t usually stick to one scent so I buy a lot of colognes.

Alright, I shop mainly at Walmart. Hmm... soo...Given one hour to get items, hmm. this is what I would do. $5000. Oh boy, oh what damage we can do? To make sure I get the maximum out of this sweep. I would have to ask if Sam's Club can be included because you can get good bargains there for what I want to do and if so, then work it out! But at Walmart, this is what I'd do. An Hour can make ya get crazy.
I'd ask for my household to get what they need. So in food,
I'd work on getting about a couple of hundred dollars worth of meat for my freezer. Enough bread to stock in freezer. 50-100 lbs of sugar, enough kool aid so I don't have to run back to the store any time soon. more than enough favorite items I can work with. Of course, I'm definitely going with a grocery list. I hope to at least get like $500, no more than $1000 in groceries which should last me a while. With that done.
I'd buy bras(5-10 each)for each of my daughters and myself.
enough panty hose to last me for a while.a couple of jeans that I can get into and wear as well as some clothes.
Then I'd hit electronics. get all the dvds I wanted but couldn't. buy a nice hdtv with a dvd attached to it, a portable dvd player,a PSP for my daughter. another computer and a couple of wireless internet routers, ipod touch for me, a couple of Ipods for my daughters. couple of gift certificates for friends and such.
I feel the secret on this is HAVE A LIST and work it from there.

Steaks, Chops, Filet Mignon, Poultry, Fowl and Fish...
These items would all make better cat food than the canned stuff, in my opinion, Scarlet! :)
If my dog and cat were still living, I would be in very serious trouble if I didn't share my meat with them. Especially with my cat...
She wasn't named "Jackie The Ripper" for nothing-- She'd try and kill me if I brought home fresh meat without sharing it! LOL! :)
I used to cook for them, and they really loved it!
May your (and your cat's) brilliant wishes come true! :)

Ooh.. this is a great discussion! I would love to have the opportunity to do this! I would definitely choose to shop Costco, because, well.. they have a lot of everything! LOL
Anyway, so I'd start out in the section that has computers, and software and stuff, because that's what I usually saw first when I entered the store. Basically I'd probably stick to a few hardware items, and maybe even grab a dozen i-pods.
Then I'd hit office supplies and get pens and paper pads, because I tend to have an obsession with that kind of stuff. I'd run down to get some meat items, pepperoni and bread.. oh, and Costco has GREAT pizzas so I'd get like 10 of those..
Then I'd get a bunch of cases of bottled water and diet coke. Then I'd get practical for a bit and get some cereal and stuff. Then I'd hit up personal care and medicine and get enough OTC's to last until they expire.
Then if I still had time, I'd run over to the fancy jewelry area (at least at the one I went to they had that.. LOL) and get me so flashy jewelry. Then run grab some books and dvd's, then last but not least, hit the gum and candy aisle, I guess kinda saving the "worst" for last.. haha but I would try to be good and just get a year's worth of sugar free gum.
Ahh.. just typing all that and thinking out the layout wore me out. I know one thing, I wouldn't take my mom on this trip, because she has trouble walking, but I would take my dad because he is in better shape than most people my age! haha So it definitely would be smart to have someone to help, if it was an option, otherwise I would be moving faster than I ever went before! haha..
oh yea.. forgot one section that I'd hit up in there somewhere, the musical instruments, I'd get a drumset, because well, it's the one of the few instruments I don't have, and I saw one at costco before.
LOL This is probably the "weirdest" list yet, but keep in mind, I am 25, single with no kids and I live at home, and I think more like a 14 year old than most 14 year olds do these days. haha
*phew* this was fun! I wish there were more discussions like this! I love making lists like this! Kinda a shopping fantasy.

wow that'll be like a dream come true. i can never get enough of supermarket shopping. but the prices these days really turn me off. if given a chance, i'll probably make the supermarket regret for the rest of their insolvent time. i'll definitely go for staple items like rice and oil. but i'll also go for items that i don't usually get. things like caviar, smoked salmon and all those fresh seafood that are out of my reach. given an hour, $5,000 worth of products is a not a problem for me. ;p

I would do awesome I think in a supermarket sweep. I love that show I would love to have been a contestant that would have been so cool. I was so much younger the last time I watched that show, I probably would not even been old enough to be a contestant! I remember going for what they thought would be the most expensive food items to fill their carts up with. While meats would be the most expensive option I wouldn't want to win a whole cart full of meat items since I am a vegetarian I wouldn't have much use for those items. I wonder if the winning contestant was really able to have all the groceries thay filled in their carts or if they just got that amount in cash. I always wonder where the shows get the money to give away thousands of dollars worth of stuff like they do. I think its from sponsers but still it just doesnt seem like it would pan out in the end.

I, too, have a natural calculator for groceries; I keep a running estimate and am generally within a few cents of the total (unless someone I'm shopping with drops something in the cart when I'm not looking).
I would clear head for the Ben & Jerry's and Amy's products; plus, I'd toss in some Annie's Mac 'n' Cheese, Steaz (sodas) and Inkos (iced tea) for good measure. Oh, and I'd stock up on Tom's of Maine toothpaste and stuff, of course!

Oh my, I'd be in heaven! I'd stock up on non-perishables (boxed items - pasta - canned goods, etc), enough meat to fill my freezer, household supplies and toiletries. But mainly the non-perishables as those would be my best bet since I know I could store them w/o spoiling!

Hey I used to watch a similar show that they ask this contestants to grab as many groceries as they can at a given time. If this happens to me gee whiz I will ran as fast as I can and grab everything I can. I might go where the hotdogs are and the canned goods and milks or chocolates...as long as it's something we can eat or something very useful to us. Then I will share it with my other sibs. It would help us a lot. There was this one time here in our office we have loads of samples from our vendors on stock and they gave it away. They let us go in the sample room and grab as many as we can. At first I didn't know we can get any or more so the next day they did it again I was ready and I grabbed as much as I could.

If I had an hour in a grocery store to shop for free, I would get mostly non-perishable items.
My freezer is not very big and it tends to freezer burn stuff after a short amount of time. We travel a lot because of my husband's job so I would need paper items and stuff that would not spoil.
I love free though, so I would have a lot of fun shopping!!

I'd probably blow it, I'd get confused and scared and blow it. I would be nervous, I would probably end up with alot of things I don't need, and forget to get things that I do need and use. I wouldn't know where to start. Yeah, with the prices of groceries going up, you'd be surprised at what little you would get actually, if they had a set amount of what you could spend, that is.

I would love to be let loose at Costco and have someone say to me, "you have one hour, take what you want". I would go crazy. I would first start off in the electronics deparptment. You know? Get me some new laptops and tv's anything i could put in my cart (although i might need several). Then id swing over to the clothes deptarptment and get everything in my size and my family's sizes hahahaa. next! i would go over to the food. they have free samples, but why waste time when you could just grab it here and take it home and test it out? Then i would go over randomly to all the aisles and get whatever I think I need or someone I know would like and just go crazy. I would be a very loved person after this show hahahaha!its too good to be true though. But a girl can always dream! :D
