RABBITS - Can anyone answer this question please?

Hi I have had many rabbits over the years and have never experienced this before. At present I have a white albino long haired and what was a jet black rabbit, this jet black rabbit has now suddenly become mainly ginger in colour on his back half and is black at the front. Can anyone tell me why this may have happened and it has happened very quickly not gradually at all, he is in good health and I don't really want to take to the vets to ask about the colour change. He is about 10 months old. Is it usual for rabbits to do this? I have never had one change colour before, he looks kinda cute but he is definately not all black anymore. Ellie :D

I wonder if it is something to do with something in the fur or the sun because I had a jet black dog and she went ginger, a touch of ginger at first and then more and more as time went on. I have heard of others say that this has happened to their pets also.

Hi Gemini_rose, It is very strange, perhaps its just us and our pets eh! a black dog turned ginger now a black rabbit doing the same! It could be the sun changing the pigmentation somehow I really don't know. Olivemai found me a link which says that the sable rabbit changes colour throughout the year but they start off dark brown not black so still congused really. Ellie :D

That second web site I found above says it can be from the sun! It is not bad as it is fur not skin that is affected!

Well we know why our pets have changed colour so you were right with the sun factor Gemini, thank you and thank you once again Olivemai for resolving this one for us. Ellie :D

Hi Gollywog, it is really strange, I can imagine my son doing that but no, it is a definite ginger brown at the back and still black at the front. Thing is I don't think I have ever seen a rabbit with this colour fur and as a child we had lots. In fact I an intrigued now so will do a search to see if I can see one even that colour for starters. He has been jet black the whole time so this sudden change is bizarre, admittedly he is young but not that young in rabbit age. I will see if someone can tell me why without troubling the vet. I had rabbits years ago. I never had that happen. I couldn't tell you what's going on. Call a vet and ask if it's normal or look it up on the net. Maybe a breeder can help with this question. Best of luck finding out.

Hi Moondancer, It was just a molt but because in the past my rabbits have been white or light it hasn't been so noticable. Huggles. Ellie :D

Rabbits like some other animals coat color changes, for different seasons since in the wild they would have to blend into survive, it also happens as some animals age.

Apparently, it is common for most rabbits to change color! Here is a link with more information: http://www.rabbits-online.co.uk/Rabbit_Colours_Info.htm there were other pages too but that one is from the UK so it may be more accurate! Enjoy your bunny!

Hi Tamara, I have now found out that it is shedding its fur and also dur to the sun changing the colour sun burn but only the fur not the skin like us humans get so it is not dangerous. He is a very special rabbit though. Huggles. Ellie :D

Maybe is not only related to rabbits. My dog was all black when a puppy and now is beige, black. It looks like fur on her head and legs become beige. It happen gradually over one year long time ago, but it is funny to look at her old pictures and see puppy almost all black.....

I have now found out that this is due to shedding and sunburn but not dangerous as it is the fur not the skin unlike in humans, but to have an all black puppy suddenly become black and beige is strange, but then I remember from the 101 Dalmaions that the puppies don't get there spots until they are a lot older. It must be strange seeing the old photos though, thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

I have had rab bits before also and have never seen or heard of anything like that before. I have had the albino ones with the red or pinkish eyes also and I have also had the black and white ones. I have never seen them change color. I wander if it has something to do with how they were bred?

Hi Raydene no he is fed well, I think he is shedding his fur and new colour coming through and plus the sun is definitely a factor on his fur too. Ellie :D

I used to keep rabbits and they changed colour just before they shed their coat Ellie. (Assuming that he lives outside) Never had one that went ginger though. If he were older I would say that it was vanity. Dying his hair because he was starting to go grey!

Hi P1kef1sh, Rabbit hutches are as expensive as chicken coops these days too! He does live outside yes but he is the first one that I have ever had that has done this colour change, its not vanity as he is only 10 months old so I would say it is a mixture of the sun on his fur and the shedding of the coat. Olivemai put some links in, I couldn't find any useful ones when I done a search so have discovered that this is what it is, it is such a bright ginger though and he looks so funny with his rear end ginger and his front black where I am used to him being all black. I tried to get a pic earlier but he kept running off to upload to show. Ellie :D

hi ellie 333 my friends who raise rabbits say this happens when a rabbit is getting ready to shed his coat, it turns sort of rust colored but its nothing to worry about. It is all' quite natural. They say its really normal and your rabbit is 'not ill or anything

Oh thanks Hatley, that is really reassuring as even though I have kept rabbits I have never had one that changes colour before but then I suppose my others have been grey or white so not so noticable as this black one eh! Olivemai found me a link that confirms the same. I am not worried now even though it is in good health it just seemed very strange to me. Ellie :D

I don't know for definate Ellie, but I'm guessing that your Mr Rabbit has changed colour because he's grown up. I've never had one that's changed colour so dramatically, but I have noticed them change as they mature.

Hi Yes he is all grown up now but I have been given some links which say that it is shedding of fur that can cause this and also the sun. He is fine in himself though so not too worried but amzazed by the colour difference so quickly really especially as it is bright ginger now instead of black. Ellie :D

one of our bunnnies,in the rabbit page picture of the grey and brown couple, the brown one got reddish grey in the spring but is nowback to brown. He didn't loose all the brown, but got lighter. The grey one didn't change. As long as they are eating, says my sister they are well. Our bunnies also drink hardly any water because they eat lots of fresh vegetables which I rinse so they are wet. If bunnnies are not well, they hide themselves under something or in a corner, because in nature they can't run away when thy are sick so they hide until they are better. My sister and I love our bunnies. Happy Hopping ! p.s. look up the House Rabbit Society. It's a great site.

We have raised show rabbits for 15 yrs and one of two things are happening. 1. He is molting out his coat and you are seeing his undercoat, or 2. he as be been bleached by the sun. If he is an inside rabbit that isn't possible, but if it's a male and he is straying urine the urine will also bleach out their coat. If it's a molt, his new coat will come in and be the correct color again however it could take some time. Jill Gold Canyon Candles www.candle-diva.com Ask me how to get started for $49.00

Yeah you dont notice it as much on lighter colored rabbits, we have all colors, and the blacks and chocolates look the worse when going thru their molt. It might take some time for him to get an even coat again but he will. Jill Gold Canyon Candles www.candle-diva.com Ask me know to get started for just $49.00

Hi Jilly, He now has a full black coat again so I think it was from a molt thanks. Its just that I have never experienced it with my other rabbits but then I have had white and pale grey before not black so that may be why as not so noticable eh! Thanks for you help and advice. Ellie :D

Hi Elitess, Sorry for late response but have had problems connecting here for some reason. My last rabbit lived for about 8 years and yes this black one with brown during the spring is going strong and black mthe rest of the year so it is obviously a molt that I hadn't spotted with the other coloured rabbits, will check to see if I have missed your rabbit one. Huggles. Ellie :D
