My husband and I have talked about this before. How can a country run itself and have a defecit? Everyone knows you can't run your checkbook like our country runs it's budget. We'd be in jail with hot checks, or bankrupt from all of the overdraft charges. Can anyone explain it to me?

i think they treat it like having a credit card with a huge limit.
they only pay back so much instead of all at once.
but it's still a huge risk.

If it were not so sad it would be funny. I have wondered the same thing for years. Even when we had a balanced budget during the Clinton administration, from what I read it was not really balanced. Do we call this creative? What happens if China, Saudia Arabia and others to whom we owe money decide they want their money? We will be in deep do-do. Of course that is one reason why we have taxes, right?

Are you kidding? Not even the US government can explain how the U.S. budget works! The fact is, sadly, it doesn't. As citizens we are not allowed to overspend from our accounts, but we can certainly give lots of money to the government so they can do it, with absolutely no consequenses. They even make election promises to balance the budget, which never happens of course.
