My dad always loved the mountains, but I always loved the sea, so we had vacations that involved driving for four or five thousand miles every year so we could go from one to the other and keep both of us satisfied.
In "The Lord of the Rings" there is a passage that says that when the elves first heard the sound of seagulls, it made them always long for the sea. Anywhere they went from then on, they always heard the sound of the gulls and it tore at their hearts becasue it made them long for the sea so much. That's how it was for me. I first heard the gulls when I was about three and my parents took me to a beach. I was lost to their calls from then on. That's how I got my nickname of "Elf". As one friend said "What else can we call some one who feels that way and loves green and growing things so much?". Now I'm 56 and I'm still the Elf.

It is a emotional question .Really .
How broad is the sea!
How tall are the mountains!
I want to swim , hands wide open
When the sun shines
Would you be with me
How broad is the sea!
Let us fly
Up to the mountain's apex
And see the earth
Flushed with gee .
I cannot choose between the sea and mountains.

I prefer the sea as well. To sit there on the sound as the waves come crashing on the sandy shore dragging out the seaweed and broken shells as if give the shore line a refreshing face lift or cleaning.... to sit there as the son goes down and the gulls and other birds heard in the background of the roaring waves is soooooo relaxing
