The incredible Mr. Phelps

This should probably go into a sports interest section, but I prefer a wider audience. A colleague said he didn't see what was so special about Michael Phelps. I asked if he'd ever swum even one race, and of course, he hadn't. He said that footballl players have others trying to tear them apart to prevent their success. Basketball players' opponents will risk a foul call to put a crimp in a player's success. Many other sports are dangerous, and there are opponents trying to stop progress, but all Michael Phelps has to worry about is water. I think competetive swimming is possibly the hardest sport in which to excel. I know the single hardest thing to do is to hit a well-pitched baseball with a bat, but at least the batter can breathe! What is really the most difficult competetive sport? Is all the fuss over this incredible swimmer just hype, and not deserved? What's your take on this?

Phelps deserves ALL of the hype he is getting. For one, he has a chance to win 8 gold medals... and for each of those medals he has to swim preliminary races to get to semi-finals, then place well in those so he can make the medal round. It comes out to him swimming a heck of a lot in just a few days span. He has to be in the best shape to be able to do this... I mean, think of the toll on your body!! And yes, people who have never swam before... Phelps makes it look like a piece of cake. They need to go try it before they make anymore judgments about it!

You're a teacher alright, swim, swam, and swum, but many people don't know that. I've tried to swim long distances before, hold my breath for long periods of time, etc. Many men are into team sports, but I prefer a sport where I improve myself, that's why I like swimming, canoeing, dance (dance should be considered a sport, but only competitive dance is sort of considered that way). All he has to worry about is water? Lots of people die because of water, getting a cramp or having muscles freeze up can kill you. I think anyone who doesn't think competitive swimming is cool, is like your friend, hasn't tried to swim or doesn't like water like my husband. Love your rose avatar, very pretty. I have a friend who loves yellow roses. Take care

Pool, heck no, Lake Clear Girl Scout Camp in NY State. Have him swim across and back, the girl scouts do. Also have him take the Life Guard test. See how he does. Take care

Now I'm going to have to watch him carefully as he navigates the puddles in the parking lot, during this rainiest of seasons!

You know, there's always somebody who downplays anyone else's achievements. A couple of Olympics ago, the nephew of one of our teachers was in the archery competition, and he did beautifully -- a silver if I remember correctly. Some of the coaches were teasing about being little Cupid, shooting arrows in the air. There are haters everywhere, and some of them have really big mouths. I'd love to invite the guy who mouthed off so much today to the pool, but we don't have one.

Hello my friend. I was looking at Phelps only that day getting around 3 gold medals, and I sure said to myself, 'This guy's gonna be getting more, for sure'. And true enough, with 8 under his belt now, I think he's really awesome and I'm sure he really deserves that. You can see his competitiveness, drive and determination when he swam . All the best to his career, and his family must be so proud of him..;)

The US is certainly proud of him. The Swimming Hall of Fame is not far from here, and I hope to go to the ceremony when he's inducted into the Hall.

I think the hype should be for ALL of the Olympians..these are our finest athletes, they have lived and breathed their chosen sport for years! I cannot even fathom it! I am awed and inspired by every one who is participating in the Olympics, and not just the USA, but ALL of them! The gymnastics, the swimming, diving, fencing, baseball, track and on and on and on. And me sitting in my little house cheering them on!

Go, Netty! You have the right idea! Michael Phelps might represent the pinnacle, but all the athletes have given blood, sweat and tears to accomplish their goals, and they do deserve recoognition. In fact, leaders and outstanding achieversin all sorts of areas deserve accolades!

I'm afraid my take on sportspeople in general is not particulary favourable because in our country they are lauded as heroes and taxpayer funded, whilst academics struggle with huge university debts. I've always considered sportspeople are doing something they love - it's a bonus for them to be put on a pedestal for it. In Australia, we've had brilliant minds who have taken their ideas and inventions overseas, as there is no government funding offered here - whereas if you are good at sports, the world is your oyster.

Your reticence is certainly understandable. Academics in the US have many other funding sources to turn to, and the government isn't supposed to back athletes, although I think they probably do. I admire Michael Phelps for his accomplishments -- he really had to put his all into the preparations, etc., but he's not competing with intellectuals or anyone outside of swimming. Frankly, I hope Australia can get its priorities a little straighter. I think they back the athletes because they have so much fan support, and they put the country in the spotlight. But that sould certainly not take the limelight from achievers in any field. As a teacher, and a person with 9 postgraduate degrees, I certainly have the utmost respect for academic people. They should be admired more than athletes, everywhere. Here they are, because people separate such feats so completely. Aussies have excelled in so many ways, surely their intellectual pursuits will catch up!

There is no way of cheating in competitive swimming. Either you are the best or you are not. Micheal Phelps set out to prove that he was better than any other swimmer that the world could find and put up against him and then he backed it up. No one has ever even attempted what he attempted and succeeded in doing. The pressures on his body and his mental focus were horrendous. And he looked like he dropped 5 to 7 pounds that he could ill afford to loose. If you saw the list of what Phelps eats in a day you would understand why the man must capitalize on his success. However isn't that the purpose of striving to be the best you can be. To capitalize in some way upon that success? BELIEVE THE HYPE PHELPS IS THE REAL DEAL!

i can't swim... let alone swim in the race under pressure... i really admired swimmers as it is not easy at all to breathe under the water... i am scared of water and i can never be friend with it... so for me michael phelps and all other swimmers in the olympics are great... take care and have a nice day...

I probably won't even attempt to swim for quite a while. Compared to those Olympic swimmers, I feel like a somewhat impared whale! It's hard to imagine that kind of dedication to something so hard, that even keeps you from breathing well.

As a swimmer I think it is really amazing what Phelps has been able to do. It is really an incredible feat to be able to move your body in the water that fast. They say he is able to use his hands and feet almost like fins. They say he swims more like a dolphin than a person. I take my hat off to him.

Wouldn't it be great if we were all able to excel to that extent in the area of choice! He's really mastered this sport and earned everyone's respect!

Hi Cobra Your colleague appears to be a bit narrow minded. I don't think I could repeat accurately the description of his training regime but i was totally blown away by what he goes through to be the best he can be. Why does this colleague feel the need to compare Michael Phelps to other athletes? Swimmers are just as credible as any other athlete. They work as hard if not harder to be the best they can be. Does the description of athlete mean that you have to be beating someone up to have that title? This colleague has a strange way of thinking. leenie

Those athletes have more than enough to do to compete with each other. Having different sports go head-to-head is just ldicrous! They're amazing, and Michael Phelps is unbelievable, even while we watch him. It's hard to imagine that he does what he does, no matter how carefully we watch all he does!

I believe Michael Phelps is a spectacular swimmer and deserves all the attention he is getting for his great skill. I honestly think that swimming is the most competitive sport out there. Not only are you using your arms and legs at the same time struggling to go faster, but you also must have a very strong lung capacity to be able to hold your breath for a great amount of time. So rock on Michael Phelps. you deserve it!!

Absolutely! One of the other athletes said he's finally socializing and the other swimmers like him. He's been so concentrated on his swimming that he didn't even talk to other people until this week! I can't imagine being that dedicated, but I certainly admire it!
