Can anybody tell me the difference between table spoon and tea spoon?

I have always wondered about the difference between the two spoons - table spoon and tea spoon. I am very interested in watching cooking shows (though I seldom cook any dishes ) and always come across the terms given to spoons as table and tea. I wonder what's the difference and why is it named so. I guess, tea spoon is the spoon used while drinking tea, then is the table spoon the spoon used while consuming the table?

,measuring spoons. - teaspoons and tablespoons are unites of measuring used in cooking and baking
Back in the last century our Grandparents used their hands to measure some smaller quantities of ingredients. Then a uniform teaspoon and tablespoons came into existence. They are not used for eating or stirring ice tea. It takes 3 teaspoons to equal 1 tablespoon.

dry measuring cup - dry measuring cup used to measure dry ingredients
These measurements have been around for a long time every since I stated cooking anyway. They are to make measuring more uniform. i would rather dip the tablespoon into the baking powder once instead of 3 times. cuts down on time. It's sort of like measuring with the measuring cup You have a a dry measuring cup and liquid measuring cup. The liquid cup has the marks for 1/4,1/2, 3/4and 1 cup. The dry measuring cup are individual cups for each portion so it can be measured exact.

Do you mean to say, it's just a form of measurement and nothing else? Then why confuse us poor folks by using both the measurements. Simply use the term 3 tea spoons instead of coining a new measurement of table spoon. Kinda confuses us males out here

I appreciate the picture of spoons. How'd you find the picture so fast, did you have it in your PC?

Besides being a unit of measure, table and tea spoons differs in size and usage. Tablespoon is larger than teaspoon. Normally, a tablespoon is usually the ones we used on meal dining and during eating whereas, teaspoon is usually meant for liquid foods like coffee, tea, deserts etc.

Okay, so does it mean that the difference is in the place of usage. The tea spoon during tea-time and table spoon during our lunch/dinner. I wonder why the chefs keep using different terms all the time while cooking something.

Not the 'place of usage' per se but the manner of how they will be used. You normally don't scoop food to eat using a teaspoon but you use a tablespoon instead to take on the amount of food. Unless otherwise you don't have any available table utensils than tablespoon, then you use the teaspoon. But of course you can eat desert (like cakes, sweets..etc) on the dining table but you use the teaspoon instead of the tablespoon to take in small amount of food. Again, unless otherwise you don't have any available table utensils than teaspoon, then you use the tablespoon.

The tea spoon is a much smaller spoon and it can be used either while drinking tea, or spreading some spices while cooking. I actually know of a sweets spoon as well, which is in the mid range between tea spoon & table spoon.

Unless I am wrong, if you look in your kitchen ( I take it you're a man that rearely ventures into it..) - you'll have big spoons which are the table spoons and little spoons which are the tea spoons. Voila!

Hey, Marina I just went to my kitchen as you said and I got more confused . I saw spoons in about 5 different sizes. Now, I am more confused as to which to call as tea spoon and which ones as the table spoons and still more what to call the three other sizes??? I usually use any spoon irrespective or tea-time or lunch/dinner-time. Yes, the only time I go for specific spoons is when I have soup (the large ones) and when I eat noodles (the fork). Please clarify further.

Perhaps the difference come from their volum. 1 teaspoon(tsp.)=5mL 1 tablespoon(tbsp.)=15mL Every one has a tea spoon when they have meal. And you can use tablespoon to serve soup for every one.

I don't use a tea spoon when i have meals, i use a dessert spoon or a table spoon, depending on what it is. I only use a tea spoon for eating cake or stirring a cup of tea or coffee.

Does it matter which spoon we use? I usually don't go for any specific spoon. I just use any spoon which comes into my vision in the kitchen and go for my food. Why the fuss between the type of spoon when the objective is just to facilitate the entry of food into our mouths.

I know that there are about 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon. Maybe it originally meant the tablespoons were used for table food like stews and such and teaspoons were used for tea and desserts.

Okay I get it, table spoons for stuff you eat at the table and tea spoons at your coffee or desserts table. Then why do the cookery chefs keep referring to those things differently, why don't they say 3 tea spoons instead of saying 1 tablespoon. They kinda want to confuse us?

The main difference between table-spoon and tea-spoon is their size as well as capacity! Tea-spoon is smaller size (approx 3 inches) and of 5 ml capacity. Where as table-spoon is of bigger size (approx 5 inches) and of 15 ml capacity. Also some 10 ml capacity are there as non-standard size. Your guess about the use of the two types of spoons are very correct! Thanks for this useful discussion!

A tablespoon is a large spoon used for dishing out stuff from a bowl and a teaspoon is a small spoon you use for mixing milk or sugar or something like that in a cup. You can use them each for anything, of course, these are just examples.

Hi bluepatch, yeah the usage is interchangeable. Anyway, I think the terms are used only from the quantitative angle.

I guess you should know the different between tablespoon and teaspoon. Tablespoon bigger volume than teaspoon. Tablespoon=15ml teaspoon=5ml. The measurement also widely use in medicine dosage.

easy. a teaspoon is small and used to stir tea, and a table spoon is the sort you'd use to eat cereal, for example.

Too smart you are Rajesh. So after this long discussion you must have come to know that teaspoon is small & table spoon is big one. Also one table spoon is equal to three teaspoons. Simply they are only mesurements for cooking recipes. You can use any of your 5 spoons in your kitchen as per their sizes & your requirements.

I'm not really sure the endepth of the them but I do know that the Teaspoon is the smaller of the 2 spoons. That is the one you would use for tea and small measurements in cooking or mixing ingredients. That is also the spoon that you would give to children to eat their cereal. Now the tablespoon is a little bigger and holds alot more than the tea spoon for both cooking, eating and mixing ingredients. That is the most information that I can give on that. Hope that it helps some.

Thanks a lot for the information. I appreciate it. It's the war between the small spoon and the big spoon, but I wonder why somebody coined words such as these for spoons.

Teaspoon is the spoon that is the smallest spoon found in the set of spoon and tablespoon is the actually one sized bigger than the dessert spoon of the same shape. Tablespoon can scoop about 25g of sugar when its flat. Hope this is useful to you

The Tablespoon is the bigger spoon - the ones that are the similar size to your forks and knives in a set. The teaspoon is the small one that you would use to stir your tea/coffee, or scoop in sugars. I always used to remember which was which by thinking that a table is bigger than a cup of tea hehehe

Yeah, it's a simple trick to remember it. As kids, we are always given such shortcuts to help remember many things. But being an adult now, I am not at all complaining.
