I can't swim at all but my 2 children can swim very well. I'm so afraid to even dip my head under the water. I would panic thinking that I may not be able to breathe.

Pity you, but don't despair! If your son could lose his fear of water thru theraphy, then he might be able to swim perfectly. It will just need time and a lot of effort on your part.
Swimming is truly the best exercise there is. Swimming makes almost all the muscles in your body move and gets exercised in the process, promotes good blood flow to your veins and is a non-impact sport unlike running or jogging or even walking. It will be just a matter of you trusting yourself to remove your fear of water. you might want to employ a doctor who deals with your phobia so that you could overcome it. Then you could enjoy the benefits of swimming.

i can swim and i love to swim. the thing u talk about if the parents can swim the child wil be able to swim too, i think there is some truth in it. if the parents can both swim and they lvoe to go in the water they will be driven more to take the kid into the water. in this proces the kid will or will not develop a love for water. as i said it can also be that the kid gets to scared and doesn't learn to swim.

It's no where related, if parents can't swim, then child can or cannot swim. It is how you train them. Of course I cannot swim but my daughter can swim becuase we sent her to swimming classes. Actually I wanted her to swim, because I and my husband are short and somebody said, if you swim you'll become tall itseems. So I wanted at least my daughter to become tall, so I sent her for swimming.

i think i understand what you mean. if a parent can not swim, they are less apt to teach their kids to swim because they themselves can not do it. I can swim and my 3yo daughter is already getting the hang of it!

Anyone can learn to swim. Just because the parent can't, doesn't make the kid not be able to. Anyone can give lessons. Adults can learn too. It's not hard once you get over the fright of the water.
My DS is 13 months and has been swimming since he was around 4 months.

I canot swim .but I didnot agree with you on your opinion that if parents canot swim and child canot swim too . Swiming ,we can regard it as a sport .should practice .if your parents canot swim. and you practice everyday . you will be very good at swiming .so that's opinion is not exist .I want swim .but no chance ,and what's more ,I didnot know how to swim .haha .
