Do you easily forget the names of the people you meet?

I forget it always, so when I meet them again, I just smile at them if they smile at me. And I will think who are they and where did I met them. Sometimes, I would ask them, because I just really have to remember. I am not good at names, I meet a lot of people always and I have lots of things to do, I am always busy and I think that makes me forget names easily. But I still recognize people's face, so no problem with being snobbish or something.
How bout you, do you easily forget names?

Yes I always forget the names of people that I meet. The place that I work at always has new people coming in but its hard to always remember there names. Sometimes I write the names down on paper so I can remember them.

Hi trishasantos...
Here's a little tip that you can use when you need to remember someone's name.
This is what I do...
When I first meet someone or am introduced to someone new, I immediately touch my thumb and index finger together, and think of an image that reminds me of their name when I hear it.
If ever I meet them again and can't recall their name right off hand...I simply touch my thumb and index finger together. This mind "trigger" device I learned a long time ago from one of my professors. I can't tell you how much it has saved my butt a number of times!
Give it a try. Of course...you have to REMEMBER to touch your fingers...else it won't work. (--smile--)

Oh, I would try that! Maybe it will work for me. That will save me too if it does work for me.

Yes I forget it as soon as they told me their name. I have to hear the name 3 times or more to remember it. I've just started in a new school 3 weeks ago and I have no ideas what half of my classmates names are..
I sucks at remember names.

I don't forget names usually, but my husband is so bad it is embarrassing. He doesn't even get the names right of his OWN family members. He doesn't just talk to Tracy and call her Karen and vice versa, he calls Laura Laurie, and Laurie Laura. It makes me positively insane. They are his own family members! Of course, he can't even get his own kids' names straight. Thank God he only has two of them. He doesn't even realize he has made a mistake until I correct him. He doesn't usually forget the name really, just gets it mixed up, though he did have to ask me what someone's name was at a soccer game last week.
What bothers me is when I see someone somewhere that I KNOW I know them but can't for the life of me remember who they are much less their names. Usually that is someone is so familiar like the cashier at the grocery store but you see them somewhere else and you struggle to remember who they are. Recently my husband and the girls went shopping at a mall outside of our town and I saw a woman in a store I swore I knew. I had to ask all three of them if they recognized her and they hadn't. She didn't appear to recognize me but I swear I have seen her somewhere before.
Overall, though, I think I'm pretty good with names.

Yes, my husband has a huge extended family. He doesn't even know the names of some of his cousins on his father's side because they always associated more with relatives on his mother's side. Karen and Tracy are sisters, only a year or two apart, however they look nothing alike. Karen has dark hair, is slim and athletic; Tracy is blonde, not so slim, and not so athletic. LOL! He is still very bad with names and I always have to gently correct him. It is a little embarrassing. You can excuse the Laura and Laurie except that they are close family members that he has known for years - Laura is my sister, Laurie is his brother's wife. And I have a cousin named Lori. I think he needs to stop and think before he speaks.

Patgalca are you the one who wrote having more than 200 relatives from your husbands family. I read a post like that minutes ago. Anyway, if you are the one, I dont know wheter to put you on my list of 'soes not forget names' and 'forget names'. But anyway, you'll be the 5th person who says they are good with names.
On your husband, I think it is okay if the names are like "Laurie and Laura". I have cousins and their names are "Jedd, Judd and Jude" - all boys. And it took me years before I could finally figure out which is which. I have aunts too that names sound alike like "Bining, Bibing and Mareng". I do figure it out too, but it takes me years. But the "Tracy and Karen", the one your husband forgets, maybe he forgets them because they look alike. Because, Tracy is way too far from Karen. Just a thought though.
Thanks for the response and happy mylotting! :)

I ask if I cant really figure out their names. I just explain something like "Sorry, I am not really good at names, I have a bad memory, what is your name again". I do it if I really have to.

I always forget names. I am on meds and that doesn't help much either. I can't even remember the person and what they even looked like.
I know I should try to remember, but no matter how bad I try to remember, I can't.

Your on meds? For memory? Well I think you should stop now if it does not work for you. You're spending money on nothing. I never tried medicines, I think it all depends on the person.

trishsantos - hi. I think everyone is guilty of forgetting names. As you suggested, we're all so busy, it's hard to remember anything in this crazy world.
I met one woman and her name was Sandy. I always got her name confused with her dog's name! That challenged me for some time. I gave up trying to remember her name, and asked my daughter to remind me.
I remember reading about word association and I linked "Sandy" to the memory of a beach, resulting in never forgetting Sandy's name again.
"Sandy beach" It worked every time.

You put words after their names? I think that is easier. Beach is sandy. LOL. But I guess that wont help on me because well names here in the Philippines are being used over and over by people. Like "Angel", I met lots of "Angel" before. And that mixes them up in the end. Easy name to remember but when too many, I dont know which is which, like what course is one "Angel" taking and what is the other. Anyway, thanks for the response and happy mylotting!

pengpendi, I think "sandy beach" is funny too. I think if the words are somehow related, it is easier to remember. I like anawar's idea of remembering. It is easy to remember.

Hey trisha, Don't worry! I know you're not alone! Alot of
people have that problem! I know I do! Sometimes when you
meet alot of people it happens. It's not on purpose, you
just forget a name. I have a friend who can't remember when
she meets someone by the name of John, yeah John! The
easiest name to remember! She has a neighbor who must have
told her 20 times in 6 years his name is John. She had
a mental block against it. And anyone with that name she
just couldn't remember. I've seem her do it over and over.
She can't remember peoples names and what's worse is she
gives them new names! There is this guy named Jim. She
decided his name was Vinny and that's what she called him.
Even when she was told his name was Jim she still called
him Vinny, and then she called him VinJim. So it takes
all kinds! At least your not like my friend!

When I married my husband I agreed to go to his hometown to get married since it was his first marriage and my second. He has a huge extended family since his parents came from families of 13 and 15 children. Every time I go down there I am expected to remember everyone's names. Of course they remember mine, I am only one person. But how am I supposed to remember the names of 200 different people? They say, "We met last time you were here." My response is always, "I met a lot of people."

Opal your friend is funny. She makes names. Yeah, your right. At least I'm not like her. And I dont forget names like "John". She is really funny. JIM is way too far from Vinny. That is letter J and letter V. Really far from each other.
Yup I am not alone. I got more that 70 respondents in this discussion and as of right now, I counted only 3 people who responded that they dont have any trouble with names. (Yes, I am counting, I think this discussion is fun.)

Patgalca, I totally agree with you. How could you possibly remember 200 names if your only one?! I have the same problems with my cousins and aunts before. My mom including her brothers and sisters are 10. I had problems with my aunts name because they sound alike like, "Bining, Mareng, Bibing". But good thing I figure it out. I have more than 25 cousins and gaining more. I dont have problems with my cousins who are older than me or the same age as mine or a little younger than me. I have problems with new borns because they are about the same age the other babies. But I will reventually be able to tell which is which when they know how to talk and walk.

same think happens to me.. I know the faces but I'm terrible when is about names.. I always think that I don't need to know people by their names, they have to know me! I really think that way and I believe than thats why I never can remember the name of someone. Maybe I got some kind of sort term memory lost..

ahahaha.. WOW! I think that way when they are the ones that needs help. But if I am the one who needs help, I think I have to remember their names, no matter what. Mines short term too, but when I ask them twice or trice, I already know them.
Thanks for the response and happy mylotting!

Yes I used to forget the names of the people I meet but now it has been minimized, I read an article in the newspaper which says that this kind of memory loss happens because of less concentration we pay when a person is giving his introduction and also the remedy for this is to concentrate on what the other person says, so it was hard for me in the beginning then with some practice I could remember most of the names now.

arycute, are you serious? bout your grandfather's name? I forget my cousins and nephew's name, well the new babies though, but when they grow older, I remember their names especially when they speak.
The one with honey? What do you mean? honey? couple? if that is what you mean, I think your memory loss with names is serious.

The older I get the harder it is to remember a name, though I tend to always remember a face, and try to place where I know them from when I see them again. I hate this, because I use to be really good with names.
