Argh! Deliberate mispelling!

Am I the only one who CANNOT stand it when people deliberately mispell words? You know, like using numbers in place of words, or typing "ppl" for "people", etc.
It drives me absolutely crazy - is it really so much extra effort to type out the actual word? I don't think it is. But it's more effort to read it, in my opinion. And what must that be like for our non-native-English speakers? I imagine it can get a bit confusing.
Seriously, just type the actual word!
What about you all? Does it drive you crazy? Or are you one of the people that commonly does this, and if you are, why do you do it?

There is a time & a place for "text" typing...namely on cell phone when you're PAYING by length of message. However, I find it an ignorant way to type when in a chat group where you GET PAID by the length of your message & it makes me sad that most have gotten too lazy to type a few extra letters. I also don't think they realize how much money they lose simply because people don't take the time & effort to read & respond to their posts. I used to be in a chat group where I was not paid anything & was chastised for my lengthy speaking. Just when I finally got it worked out as natural typing, I joined myLot & now I have to remember NOT to "text" type. I do TOTALLY agree that it is NOT the smartest thing to do when you are GETTING PAID by the word!!!

Yes, I hadn't really thought of that aspect, it might actually help me get payout. Up to $2.43 at the moment, so that's over a pound sterling. A decent loaf of bread now, usually costs over a pound!!!

I'm not a native speaker and I could see why it could be confusing even though it doesn't confuse me that much. I have been writing and speaking English for a long time now so I think that also makes a big difference.
What annoys me the most is the use of the word 'U', it's only three letters out full so there is really no use for abbriviating it.
I once saw a whole discussion in this type of 'slang' and I had to ask the person to please explain what they meant as there were so much abbreviations I couldn't keep up with the story anymore. I never saw anything like it!
So yes, it does bother me aswell, and no, you are not on your own concluding from all the responses you got so far .

I'm with you - a whole conversation like this is something that I just cannot comprehend - it hurts my head to read it, because it's like learning a new language - and English IS my first language! I don't mind people doing it occasionally, or people who are just not great spellers or great with grammar or whatever - it's the CONSTANT use of DELIBERATE mispelling that really gets to me.

I agree, if someone makes an effort to learn a foreign language and they misspell something or have really akward grammar I can only appreciate them trying, if they do so on purpose however (and all the time) it does get bothersome.
Thanks!

Yes, if one is able and capable, it is far better to spell out each word properly, as you say for the better understanding by all our non-native English speakers! Bear in mind you texters, that when you write on here, you are potentially reaching out to an audience of tens, hundreds of people, so its worth making that extra effort. So good point, young sweetheart!

Well, I'm a script editor, so I'm big on spelling and grammar - using a mobile phone IS different, though, as using one of those things to type can be quite taxing. But there are so many that use regular computers - and it ISN'T always understandable, especially for those whose first language is not English. Shortening a word here or there isn't so bad - it's when an entire sentence is shortened in some way that makes it unbearable.

it really annoyed me sometimes as well... but as long as i can understand what the poster is trying to say, then it's OK... if i can't understand it, then i won't even bother to reply to that discussion... it is just a waste of my time... i think they get used to text messages... that's why they type in that way... take care and have a nice day...

I agree this is annoying! Though I am occasionally guilty of using "ppl", "lol", and some other abbreviations myself, I limit that to text messages with friends who know what I'm talking about. I can't see the point of substituting numbers for letters, it is more trouble than spelling it out, and it is irritating beyond belief trying to read it. And, I think all the abbreviations, misspellings, etc. have no place in forum postings, professional emails, or anything handwritten. I actually had someone email me at work once: "pls do such-and such. thx". (I don't remember what it was but that's beside the point). To me this was incredibly lazy, especially considering she was within earshot of me and could have just asked me. Another one actually had in his email signature "Brgrds" instead of "Best regards". All he had to do was type it out ONCE and it would appear in every email. And this was a manager. These type of things really irk me.

I may do this from time to time, but take no offense to this but what I am tired of seeing is this same post, it seems like every week someone is posting about, spelling, grammar, etc.
Some people get very nasty about creative spelling, grammar etc. I am sure the post is still there, check it out, very interesting conversation. Please, again, take no offense.
I myself posted a discussion similar to this. I was "ripped a new one" about Mylot rules, etc, I should look before I post, blah blah blah. It was not cool.
I just get tired of people judging others spelling, creative spelling ;), and grammar; when there is no one so perfect out there that has any right to judge. Please try to check out the similar post of this.
Have a great one!
