I am interested in owning my own restaurant someday, so I am interested to know what kinds of restaurants people like to go to. Do you like fancy, gourmet restaurants, hip modern restaurants, places that serve comfort foods, places with international cuisine? What is it about your favorite restaurant that you like? What is your favorite food there?

I have to say that even though the food is usually very good in the fancier restaurants, I just don't always like the atmosphere. I would prefer to be in a casual restaurant where I can sit and enjoy my food, but at the same time don't feel too "uptight" or stuffy. I enjoy places like Applebee's, Chili's, etc, where I can get decent food but not worry about having to fit the surroundings.
As far as food, I love it all! As long as there's something on a menu that I like, I am not disappointed with restaurants. I do like having places where I can have more than 1 or 2 things though and have something new and good to try everytime I am there.

One of my favorite restaurants is in my hometown in Michigan. I like them because the food they serve is very upscale and gourmet, but their atmosphere is kind of like a cozy European pub. You don't have to dress up or anything, and they cover their tables in butcher paper and give you a cup of crayons to write on the table! I like it when high-quality food doesn't mean snobbish, elitist surroundings.

I know what you mean about the fancier restaurants. It feels like the waitstaff is just waiting and staring at you until you're done your meal so that they can get your money and get you out of the door then it's onto the next customer. The chain restaurants like Applebee's/Chili's are good as far as making you feel comfortable, like you're with friends. Also they're kid friendly, another plus in my book - you don't have to worry about getting too messy.

I'm not really a fancy formal restaurant girl, my favorite restaurants are mostly specialty and modern. There's Cibo, which serves more Italian food, their pasta is yummy and I'm craving for one right now, then there's Cafe Mediterranean which serves Kebab, Pita, Pizza, there's also Sumo Sam which serves Japanese food, their Agedashi Tofu, Happy Birthday Noodles and Ebi Tempura rocks my world. I have quite a number of favorite restaurants cos being a student and now a graduate of Hotel, Restaurant, Institution Management we were exposed to different hotels and restaurants so we kind of have a taste of almost every restaurant.
If you're planning on owning your own restaurant, make sure you study what people really like in your place, what people would really want to go to and most importantly, who your target market is. Identifying your target market would make things easier for you to plan the other things.

Well, I don't plan to start my restaurant where I'm currently living, because as soon as I and my husband are both finished with school we want to get the heck out of here! Colorado Springs is already really overcrowded and probably doesn't need any new restaurants- in fact, they tend to fail because people already have plenty of their favorites to choose from.

My favorite type of restaurant is a seafood restaurant. But, the prices are usually so outrageous. If they could make it more affordable, that would be great. I like buffet style, but what bothers me is people and kids going up there and handling everything and sneezing and coughing..if somehow that could be prevented, that would be nice. But, I know that's asking way too much. LOL I know I sound too picky...sorry...I usually just settle on going to a regular restaurant where you are seated and waited on. If not a seafood restaurant, then a homestyle type restaurant with comfort food is what I would be happy with.

Yeah, pretty much the only affordable seafood places are like, Red Lobster or Long John Silvers. I love Red Lobster's biscuits, but I kind of get tired of the same seafood dishes over and over again, and the more interesting dishes are more expensive. Seafood is expensive at the grocery store, too- I guess it's just harder to supply than land meats.

I usually like all types of restaurants but my best experience has been with buffets. You can eat as much as you want and save some money while you are there. Buffets can have a nice atmosphere about them.
Chinese buffets are the kinds of buffets that really strike my fancy and there are also some buffets that offer both American and Chinese to try to suit different customers. Good luck in your endeavor of opening your own restaurant.

I go depending on what I want to eat at the time. If I'm really hungry I go for those who serves real food. If I just want to eat something I go for fast foods. I think what really matters in a restaurant is that its food is good enough that it makes me wanna come back again and the way they serve the food and things like that. Cause there's this restaurant where an hour already has passed and still couldn't able to serve the foods we order and then when we started tasting the food its like crap food. And we really regret going to that restaurant and promise not to go there again. They also have only one staff circling and bringing and taking orders from the customers which is really disappointing.

Having to wait an hour for your food is bad, and if the food tastes like crap when it gets there that's horrible. I've had one worse, though- I went to a restaurant once on a busy night, and our waitress took our drink order and then brought us our drinks...and then we never saw her again! She never even came to take our food order! We waited for about an hour because we were with a group of friends who had gotten there earlier and already ordered their food, but when she never showed up again we just left. I don't think we even paid for our drinks.

We have an area of town that has over 100 restaurants in around a 1 mile strip. Mostly these are fast food chains. The ones that do well though are the ones that keep it simple. There is a couple of 50's style diners, Greek, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese etc. Simple menus but with added flare. Think of what MAMA would make. We all know that MAMA is the best cook. Then take that and add some regional flare that no one else offers. Simple comfort food. Back to basics.

Haha, well, it kind of depends on who your Mama is! I was raised by my grandma, and you know how everyone always loves their grandma's cooking? Well, she has about two recipes that I really enjoy, and the rest is like...no thanks. She put sauerkraut in chocolate cupcakes once, because she saw some cooking show that was talking about different textures in foods, and how sometimes you can substitute one ingredient for something that has a similar texture. And she thought, "well, sauerkraut has the same texture as shredded coconut..." It was horrible. But yeah, it is good to take good down-home foods and add your own appeal to them. That's something I try to do in my own kitchen.

I like plain food the best, and I like it to be seved without all the garnishes. Sometimes when I go out, I order a simple plain meal and then I see a load of onions or peppers sprinkled all over it, which I detest. Next to plain food, I like Chinese food but again I prefer plain sauces without all the vegetables. I guess I am a picky eater but I love to go to the restaurants which cater for people like me.

My favorite type of restaurant and cuisine is Italian. Give me a nicely
decorated Italian restaurant that serves everything from a slice of pizza
and a Coke to something more elegant like fettucini alfredo and a nice
chianti. Oh mama mia.
Nothing better than a place like that where you are comfortable wearing
jeans and sneakers or a tie and polished shoes. Good luck with whatever
path you decide to take.

My kind of restaurant is one that caters to not only the adults but the kids. I have yet to find one like that. I would like to see a menu that has all the adults foods and then something just as exciting for the kids other then chicken fingers grilled cheese or something to that nature. Also one that doesn't play loud music. I enjoy talking to my family and not having to shout over music just to hear what others are saying.
My favorite meal is shrimp scampi, so seafood would probably be my favorite restaurant.

I have noticed that most kids' menus are pretty bland- mac and cheese and tater tots and the like, stuff you can make at home just as easily, and far cheaper! Kids do tend to be picky and like homestyle foods better than gourmet foods, but that's no reason to not give them some different options!

I like going to restaurants which have buffets , lunch time and dinner time. With buffets, one can chose the items one likes. For instance, I don't eat beef, and at the buffet I have many other choices.

It all depends on what kind of food I am in the mood for. In general, I love to go to Japanese hibachi places though. Especially ones that serve tofu with the vegetable hibachi because I have found that not all of them do. I am going to miss our Japanese place when we move again.

I like a lot of restaurants. However, I think the ones that I like the most are Olive Garden and Texas Steakhouse. Everything I've ever ordered at both have been wonderful. I don't know anyone who doesn't love Olive Garden's house salad and breadsticks. Their veal parmesan is excellent as well as all their pasta dishes and even seafood/steak combos. I have to say though, every Olive Garden I've ever been in is absolutely freezing. What's up with that? Does everyone that works there suffer from hot flashes? As far as Texas Steakhouse goes I've had their BBQ ribs - oh YUMMY!. Their steak salad with crumbled blue cheese (to die for) and even their chicken fingers are great (not heavily breaded). I just wish that I had the chance to get out more to enjoy those wonderful restaurants. What are your favorites?

I'm one of those people who is almost always cold, so I get cold in most restaurants. So I guess I've never really noticed about Olive Garden being particularly cold. I do really like their Zuppa Toscana (though my best friend makes it better) and their other stuff is really good too. But I think I like Johnny Carino's better for three reasons: the one in my town has unlimited refills on Italian cream sodas, I like their bread better, and they have cannoli on their dessert menu. Typically, though, my favorite restaurants are independently owned rather than chains.

I have a family so I go to family places a lot. There is not too much of what I would like to see out there. I love places that make the food themselves. And there aren't that many places that make the food themselves and you can bring your family and still be able to feed everyone. I like trying a lot of different things. The two things that make the experience for me is very well prepared food and friendly attentive but not too present waitstaff.

I think the biggest downfall of "family-style" restaurants is that their food is usually lower quality than other restaurants- as if people with children didn't want to eat good food! And I hear you with "not too present waitstaff." My husband and I went out not too long ago and had a waiter who checked in at our table about every 5 minutes, and always asked us questions when our mouths were full. Why do they always do that?

I prefer places that are buffet style that serve international food, preferably chinese food. It's my favorite type of food. I'm not a big fan of sit down, wait for your food type restaurants because sometimes it takes forever to get your meal and I hate waiting. Plus, the service is not always the best.

My favorite restaurant serves delicious gourmet pizza, pasta, soup, and sandwiches. The main entrees are also good but more expensive so I don't always order those. Of course, they have an excellent selection of desserts. What draws me to that restaurant is the ambiance, which is very casual and at the same time classy (not noisy, not polluted) and the food which is memorable and worth every penny. Prices aren't steep, but nothing's a bargain as well. I think on top of he menu, you should also be able to manage the restaurant well. So be sure to hire good people. Good luck with your endeavors!

Hi, thyst07 I Love restaurants. I enjoy all the mentioned above (probably Iam of no help to you) but this is the truth. Now, my favorite is French gourmet cuisine, and some Provencal. I know nowadays the Asian fusion is on vogue. I myself remain classical Lover of Escofier and Paul Bocuse's French cuisine. As of atmosphere Iam an abdicate of Alan Ducasse Criteria. I still believe in The Michelin guide. This said, I will also say Iam an adventurous gourmet that enjoys new ideas I try them and if they are good for sure I will returned for more!
I have been very lucky to travel around and food has been one of my favorite ways to get to know the country's culture.
I really wish for you to accomplish your interest in owning your future restaurant. From a restaurant's regular costumer to an owner: Whatever cuisines you have in mind, always pursue Excellency in food and service with your costumers in real perspective.
Best wishes!
