Yes, i think i failed... my very first try at gardening... It has been almost two weeks now since i planted seeds of sage herb... and i haven't seen any sprout yet... i was so careful not to water the seed too much or too little... i put it in the area where it will get enough sun light... and i even bought the soil that they sell in the mall... I don't know what i did wrong... or am i too impatient... to i need to wait more days?... or did i really fail in my first bid at gardening?...

Just wait more and you will see the sprout, I dont think im right about this this but dont lose hope. But if it does not sprout, its ok to try again and plant another, theres always a second chance.

I think i will have to wait for a while... there is currently a storm and another one is coming... and according to my research... Sage plants trive well with lots of sun... so i will have to wait for all the typhoons to clear out...

Well, it think you are right in not to lose hope... but the sprout may have been destroyed by the typhoon... or the seeds may have been eaten by the birds because they are no longer there when i checked yesterday... so i think i will just try again... Thanks for the response...

Sage is a finikey plant. It can be very hard to start from seed. It is also possible that the seeds were too old to germinate. Give it a bit more time before you completely give up on it, though. If it does not sprout, you might want to try purchasing a sage plant that is already established. Some herbs are very hard to start from seeds successfully. But don't give up completely!

I tried purchasing a sage plant... but to no avail... i think it is not a very popular plant in my country... or i just do not know the local name for it... i guess i will just have to try again... i still have some seeds at home... so i think i will plant them this weekend... Thanks for the response...

lol..I'm not sure why they haven't sprouted yet....maybe you just don't have any green fingers (like me). I don't go anywhere near gardening because I know I'm no good at it. A neighbour once asked me to water a plant when she was travelling. All I had to do was pour a mug of water every day. And I did just that...and the poor plant withered away! No planting...no digging...nothing! It happened again (with another friend) and since then, I've asked all my friends not to ask me to water their plants. We have to get the children at my school to plant a few saplings and I have entrusted that job to my assistant teacher....or else I'll end up killing the whole set! And the kids will be so upset!

I guess i planted them in the wrong time... sage in my recent research prefer a lot of sun... and a little water... and right now it is the rainy season in my country... so i would have to plant my remaining seeds in the summer... but you made the right decision in entrusting the job to your assistant... so that that kids won't get upset... Thanks for the response...

Hi aseretdd, Maybe you need to wait more days to see if they will come up! I was like that also when it was my first time, I will check often and judge that I didn't make it but after waiting for a few more days, they started to sprout and begin to grow so fast!

Wow... you were able to grow some okra... that is really nice... but then... winter is coming there... so for sure most of your okra plants will die... but like you said... you can always do it again in spring... that is the best time of the year to plant vegetables...

I don't know... i check for the seeds and nothing was there anymore... maybe the typhoon destroyed all the sprouts and were blown away by the stong winds... or maybe the birds got to them first... well i think i will just try again... i still have a couple of seeds... so maybe this weekend... Thanks for the response...

My father's major in college was agriculture... but he never did use that because he went abroad and was in a different field of work... while my mother does not have a green thumb... and most plants die when she waters them... good for you that you have someone to ask if ever you decide to try gardening... Thanks for the response...

i think maybe you planted it too deep and thats why you havent seen the sprout yet. or maybe the seeds arent too good or something. it is possible that maybe you over watered it or whatever. i say next time grow them in a baggie with a paper towel and water that way you can see the results and then plant them.

I don't think i planted it too deep... because i followed the instructions carefully... but over watering may be the problem... because a few days ago there was a typhoon in my country... and it rained hard for a few days... Well i guess i just have to try again... Thanks for the response...

You may have not done any thing wrong. Do you still have the seed package? Some packages will tell you how long it will take for the seeds to germinate. If not I looked on the net and one place said that it take from 2 to 3 weeks for sage to germinate. I would wait one more week to see if the seeds start to grow. It you think that the pot is getting too much rain then bring it inside for a couple of days. be careful not to over water. It require moderately moist soil. Good luck.

Yes try again. Then set them inside until they are above ground or at least where they don't get extra water from the rain.

I can't see who has answered your discussion because I'm answering from my e-mail, but I hope Grandpa Bob answered. He really knows everything about gardening. I admire you for trying. I'm afraid I have a black thumb. I would love to grow something, and I have almost succeeded several times, but ultimately something happens to halt my success. The closest I got was planting lettuce and squash. Then the guy who mowed my parents lawn mowed over my garden with a weed eater! Is that how you spell weedeater?

I think Grandpa Bob is still busy with a lot of things right now... but i sure hope he can give me some tips... i think i will try to plant some seeds again... but i will have to check if another strong typhoon is coming... i don't want to waste anymore seeds... maybe you do not have a black thumb... why don't you try gardening again... so that you will know for sure... I think having a green palm or thumb is like a gift from God... because not every body can successfully grow a plant... i have no way of knowing if i have that gift... so i think i will have to try planting some seeds again... Thanks for the response...

I never tried to grow something from a seed b/c I thought it wouldn't work too well. I like going to the center and buy some that are already growing lol. I cheat. I even look for some that already have the veggies already on them lol. I might try it with my kids so they can see how something can grow from just a seed but not sure what I want to try. Something easy for sure lol. I do have a container garden it looks sort of like a barrel so it can't be too big and I have been putting alot of stuff in there like coffee grounds and egg shells b/c I read that they make the soil better. I have some fruit peelings that I want to try and put in there also so that should help when I grow my winter veggies. good luck with your garden I hope it comes out soon.

Hello aseretdd, I think you are better than me. Well, it doesn't matter whether you succeed or failed, at least you did try. I am worse than you, as you already knew it. Aha, don't ask me question about gardening as you will definitely not going to get the proper answer! Try once more or you should keep trying!

heh seeds take a bit longer than 14 days to germinate and raise to the top of the soil where you can see them. chillaX. if they still show no growth after 3 months.. then you can consider yer attempt a failure.

hi! i hope your first try at gardening will not stop you to try again.. we learn from our mistakes.. we can also take some advice from others.. i love gardening.. for me it's a way to relax.. it's a very good hobby.. maybe the seeds you bought are not good, or the typhoon might over-watered them.. the next time, you can check if there's expiration on the seed packs, and try to have the pots away from direct rain.. usually i put my nursery pot in a roof-covered area with sun access (if you suspect the birds might have picked the seeds, you can put a screen protection as cover to your pot).. this way i can control the water.. when i think the sprouts are stable, then i will transfer/distribute them to bigger pots.. good luck!!

My first attempt will surely not discourage me from trying again... i still have a few seeds back at home and i plan to plant them this weekend... but i will check out if there is a typhoon coming... just to be sure... the expiration written on the packet said 2011 so... the seeds are still good... Thanks for the response...

I see this discussion was posted 9 months ago and from your responses, you still weren't too successful? Did you make a second attempt at gardening? If you're going to take care of it in your apartment, I suggest you buy those jelly things - those that don't need to be watered but replaced after a month or two? First because it looks better than soil, second because it's less mess, third because you don't have to know how much water to put :D Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Well, i did buy a poinsettia plant last December... and it is still alive today... i just water it twice a day... and it is growing and growing... so i think i just don't have to start from scratch... like just buy a grown plant... and nurture that... but the jelly thing is also a good idea... Thanks for the response... and for reviving this discussion...

There are a lot of reasons seeds don't come up, so don't give up gardening! I've gardened for years, but I bought a sage plant already started. Some things are harder to start than others. If you want to garden in the house, try lettuce or radishes first. Also, buy seeds from reputable companies.

i never try gardening before as i just know that i didn't have a green hand... i think i will fail as well if i try as i didn't have any knowledge at all about gardening... anyway, i would like to encourage you to try again as there is no such thing as a failure until you decide to stop trying... as long as you are still willing to try, you are not failed yet... it is just called a pending success... :-) good luck... take care and have a nice day...

You sound just like me !! The house we are living in we bought last year and one of the things that really attracted me to the house was all the plants especially the flowers but when I went to weed them I was not sure what I was doing . I told my husband either I just weeded the plants or I have killed every one of them . Thankfully I did get the weeds but am still never certain when I go out there if I am pulling a weed or a plant . Any plant I ever have in the house is sure to die on me in a matter of months . I seem to over water , under water , not give it enough sun or give it to much . I wish they came with an instruction manual and could speak up , they would last much longer lol .

I think you are one of those people who doesn't have a green thumb... just like my mother... all plants she waters would die... but when she resorted to talking to them... they survived longer then those in the past... some say that is the best way in taking care of plants... Hi Aseretdd, I've given up on growing plants since my first attempt during my teenage years. Every plant I had, would grow and then die. Whereas those planted by my brother grew like Jack's Beanstalk - so strong and healthy. I gave up - really didn't understand why. Same seeds, same soil, same amount of water, same sun! Yet mine fail to grow. I remembered accusing my poor brother of 'sabotage'. Now that I have my own house, I'm too lazy to try! Maybe one of these days!

I think you need to try just for you to find out if your brother did sabotage you plants back then... if you encounter the same situation where in your plants do not grow... then you do not have a green thumb... same as my mother... Thanks for the response...

Don't give up aseretdd, I think maybe the typhoon killed any sprouts you may have had. Here in the states we have dates on our seed packets. If you do there also, be sure to check the date before you buy. Just keep trying and you will be rewarded with nice fresh sage, nothing compares!

First of all don't worry it's only been two weeks. Second what is your soil like? I live in Denver and since it's mountainous desert out here the soil is hard claylike mud so i needed to be ECOTEK i think it's called and it's made with claybuster stuff in it. I put 3 big bags of that in my garden and rototilled it all up and i had stuff growin everywhere, the stuff really helped the soil get what it needs to grow new vegetation. Besides you did rototill your garden area first right? The ground needs to be tilled up to get the fresh stuff up and breathing to really make plants take off and grow roots. This is just what worked for me and it worked really well so give it a shot, what do ya got to lose.

Since i live at the third floor of an apartment building... i had to buy the soil from the store where i bought the seeds... and the sales lady said that it is like a treated soil... but i check yesterday... and the seeds are no long there... they must have been destroyed by the typhoon... or the seeds were eaten by bird... so i think i will just have to try again... since like you said... i have nothing to lose... Thanks for the response...
