How do you deal with your old computer?

The old computer may not be useful for me any more because it's slow, especially I use the big software such as Photoshop. And I will give my old computer to the people who need it. They don't have a high requirement for computer. Mostly using Word and Excel and playing some little games will be good enough for them. So at least my old computer won't be a waste.

We still use ours. We have it set up for our 5 year old daughter. It is a great learning tool for her.

I sold an antique piece of a computer once. I couldn't use it for much, but a student bought it off me. I guess she found some use in it. :)
Cheers and happy mylotting

I was in Bangalore that time, and I was about to shift back to Mangalore. So I did not want to lug that computer along. No, I did not get much for it. Used computers are dirt cheap in Bangalore, and I had to almost give it away. Got just enough pocket money. :)

This is a great discussion, youless. I currently have 2 computers that I am ready to get rid of but I can't because I want the hard drives to be erased first. There is alot of my data on them and I want to be assured it's gone before I give the computers away. One of the computers actually crashed and the hard drive had to be rebuilt to re-capture the data. So that computer will probably be destroyed in some way as it won't be usable by anyone, except maybe for a part or 2. But still, I want to make sure my personal info and work data is not on there. So, I still have both computers in the closet until I find someone that can erase the data for me.

to erase the data....
make a boot disk dos 7.0
startup run fdisk.exe and wipe out all partitions make some new ones and format them run fdisk.exe again and wipe out all partitions put the harddisk in a windows pc bootup and make on big partition and format (do not enable quickformat)
and voila you can not restore or recover any data from them to be really really sure you can run killdisk this can peform what's called a lowlevel format but be aware if you interrupt this process you can throw youre harddisk away... good luck

I think after formatting the hard disk for a few times can erase the data forever. I have a doubt about it from the TV series Prison Break. Hard to believe that a broken hard disk can still recovery most of the data. It just doesn't make a sense

Wow, made28. That sounds pretty impressive. I did not hardly understand anything you said because I am clueless when it comes to things like that about the computer. However, you seem to know what you are talking about. I usually just hire somebody to do as I want and hope that they do it. I appreciate your information.

My husband likes to use the old computers for spare parts, so when we have a computer that has long passed its prime, we save it in our storage cupboard and use the parts we can in something else, and then take what can not be used, up to the recycling centre, so they can do something with it.

That is an awesome idea. For me when a new computer comes in I usually pass down the others for each room. And the one at the end (slowest/oldest) is sold for dirt cheap and the money split with the kids. The last one we sold for 60 bucks and each kid got $20. I am dying to get a new computer but I just can't afford it right now. Grrr. Someday......

I upgraded my computer few months ago. I don't tend to keep old things. Except for memorabilia purposes. lol Usually, i go for the latest if I have means. I always wanted to be in and convenient.

I tried to get my old computer repaired, but the motherboard was faulty and they wanted £300 or $430 to fix it and then they couldn't guarantee how long it would last! So I had to buy a new one, the old one I can still use to watch dvds on, but I can't connect it to the internet, so as I haven't got a dvd player it comes in useful and it has a big computer screen too to watch movies on which is bigger than the screen I work on!

my old computer unfortunately is not usable - and to repair it they said would cost $700. Well, for $700 you could have a brand new pretty dang nice computer! So sadly my old computer is just sitting in my closet in case someday i figure out how to fix it myself (unlikely, we couldn't even figure out how to take it apart!) or once in awhile i'll let the kids bang on it.

Previously I have 3 old computers. This is my forth computer. The first 1 I can't do anything with it cause it burned. lol. The second old computer, i gave it to my niece. At least she can play some low graphic games and learn window. The third computer I sold it to my friend. Hard to sell to computer shop because they always pay you low price. Instead of selling to computer shop, I sold it to my friend at the same price. In the same time, i can help my friend to save some cost as he does not need high spec com.
Happy mylotting

Many of things can be done with old computers, at least for me, this is wat weve done
with our old computers.
we upgrade PC every 4-6 years since PC speed was still 90Mhz tops-486DX era.
1) Donate to Science - Old PCs were used as experiment, tweak everything from software to hardware.
2) Test machine - This is used to check Software performance on slower PC and older Oses.
3) Other platforms - Can be installed with different OS like BSD or SOlaris or Linux.
4) Can be converted into POS and sell it small and medium businesses.

I never would sell my old computer! Ofcourse, I have bought new faster and better computers in the last 10 years, but I'm using my old computers to make one great machine out of it! And ofcourse, I can use the feeding, CMOS battery, hard drive disks and the jumpers over and over again! Ok, it may not be big, it may not be quick, but it's still useful!
