I originally went off to buy a DSLR camera with a zoom lens, I didn't want to pay a lot for it but when i got to the shop I sort of went a bit silly and actually bought one a lot more expensive one, I ended up buying a Canon Eos with an extra 200mm lens and i bought a monopod and extra battery and a large memory card and it cost me $2500, so I did go over budget but you can get cheaper , it was the 200mm lens that did cost a bit...good luck with your camera buying, I love mine, I just love the DSLR....

It does depend on what you actually going to use it for, I had to have one that would take good shots of bands on stage but most people just want an up market one from the normal digital camera...I would say if you can afford a zoom lens it would be good...I think a large pixel is good, say 10. I think you will find they are all much the same unless you want to do special things like I wanted one for, maybe just go to a camera shop with a list of any special features you want and your budget and see what they can do, thats what i did...

the Nikon D60 is a great DSLR camera. it's very user friendly. i am not sure about the price though but it's not too expensive.

Without understanding what you mean by a "primary DSLR", the use you intend to put it to, and you budget, it is really hard to even start to suggest anything.
DPReview is a good site for camera reviews, and betterphot.com has a useful "camera selector", while guides you through the choices and helps yopu narrow down your choice.
