i dont know about nikon but olympus is good as i had used it but not the digital cam and the ordinary one, so i think he brand is good so you can trust on.
but as far as digital camera i have a canon an´d i really like it as it is easy to operate, good functional features, good model and can be recommended for long term and rough usage. i am using it from about two years and i use it frequently as i had to take more snaps of my small son and his all new moves and also on my trips which we keep going. so i feel it is the best for me and may be it can be proved good for you also.
i hope my discussion would be helpfull to you and wish you all the best.

I would recommend the Olympus, I use an Olympus E500 and it is wonderful, I have a friend with a D40 and I have used it, it's not my favorite camera, I don't really like the controls, the E500 has more options it seems and even though there are many options it does not take too long to get used to. I would recommend my camera any day, there is a nice shop on ebay where I got mine about two years ago, the owner is called "cametacam" or maybe it was "cametacams" I am not sure, but it is under that, or it should be... He has a bunch of different low priced nice Olympus dslr's. If you can't find it just ask and I can look it up in my history or something, that is if you are planning to even look. I hope you enjoy what you get!

Side by side, the E420 is the better specified camera, but you really need to try them for yourself. The Olympus may be too small for you, or you might find the Nikon too basic (it is right at the bottom of Nikon's DSLR range).
If I were choosing etween them, I would buy the E420 without a moment's hesitation. But if you were comparing the E420 with the Nikon D80, that would be a harder choice!
