Written Word or Spoken????

I find myself listening to books when I am busy. When I am driving and working. As a child I used to fall asleep to the good old fashion classics. Do you feel that audio books are just as important as the hard copy? Do you get as much out of listening to a book as you do from actually laying your eyes on the words? If you don't please explain. I love to hear your different experiences.

I prefer the written word and nothing will ever replace it for me. But I do listen to audio books. It makes my workout time at the gym go by so much faster. I can not stand going to the gym, everything about it bores me, but being in the middle of a good book will make me actually look forward to my next workout. I have a hard time focussing on a book while driving unless I am on a long trip. But even still then I do as I get very caught up in taking in scenery.

I have never really gotten into audio books, though I tried to listen to one for a while. I don't know what it is about them... I do like radio dramas and shows - like old Jack Benny and stuff - so you would think I would like audio books. But I just haven't ever really gotten into them. Besides, I think they interfere with the whole reading routine. It's hard to get the same experience out of a book with someone else reading it.

I cnan see your point. I do get alot out of them. I prefer the written word, but i will listen if I need to. I love radio dramatizations. My father had some oldies. The ones that aired before television was popular. They were amazing. The sound effects were crazy. Thanky you for reminding me of those, I need to go find them. Thanks for sharing both of you. Happy working out Makingpots.

I like both. I love to read but sometimes, like when driving or taking a bath, it is easier to listen. It brings it to life, too, with the wonderful actors who speak the roles and the narrator. I cannot see a difference. Many blind people listen to books rather than read with braille. I learn as much by listening as I do by reading. In fact, I have about five that I borrowed from my cousin that I am getting ready to listen to. Either way, I just love books.

I really like audio's too. I am a huge bath person. I like to go in ther and soak unitl I am a raisin. I find that I ruin less books when Ilisten to the audio version. I have dropped so many books into the tub, and kept on reading by the way. :-) I like some dramatized forms, but I really like the unabridges version. I know that way I am not missing anything because it is exactly lME too, it is exactly like the book. Me too, I love books. Thank you nanjet!

Yes, I have had my share of soaking wet books in the bath tub, too! LOL My favorite books are mysteries and espionage. Maybe I was a spy or detective in a past life! LOL

I have never tried and audio book before... and i haven't seen one being sold in bookstores here in my country... so it is always the good old fashion classic reading for me... but i do want to try the audio version... and if it is more convinient... then i think i will use it a lot more often... since i rarely have the time to read nowadays...

I think knowledge in any form is important be it written or audio. I think that in today's busy busy world audio makes alot of sense. It's hard with work and family to sit down and enjoy a good book. I know for me when I try, the little ones are climbing all over my lap, the hubby is talking to me or needs me to do something for him, so it's really hard to concentrate. With an audio book you can slip it on and listen while you are doing dishes, taking a bath, cleaning the house, exercising or whatever. In all honesty, if I had to choose I like the hard copy better. There's nothing like curling up on the couch with a hot cup of coffee or tea and settling in with a good book, however I never get that chance anymore, so I can definately get behind the audio books.

Oh yeah, another busy mommy. I have three little ones and I know. I have taken the iPod to bed on many occassions. We lay with our boys to get them to sleep. i got through the whole Terry Brooks series Magic Kingdom of Landover series that way. I tended to lay there a little long than normal but I got the books finished. Oh nice cold winter day, hot cup of Joe and a grat book. Lets take a mommy vacation. :-) Thank you for your post. We should organize a mommies virtual retreat. sound fun?

Hello deees... I've never listened to an audio book. I see them everywhere but it just never crossed my mind to try one. I think I would stick with reading the book. I enjoy the peacefulness, the serenity and the quiet that comes with reading a book. This may be a stupid question but what if you fall asleep while listening to an audio book, do you easily find the "page" where you drifted off?

No, that is the only problem. Although with my iPod, I find it is easier to find my place than on a disc. I have woke up many times while listening and been completely lost. Funny youasked. That is the only problem with audio's. The other thing, I have to have a great book when I am driving. It can not be a monotone person, it has to be someone that is energetic and animated or I will fall asleep. Thanks for asking. Before you ever get an audio book, check it out at the library. They usually have a great selection. There are great for long trips, or a great bath.

Thanks for the library tip! You are right, I'd better check it out that way rather than spend money on something I may not like. I don't think I would listen to it while driving though. I worry that it might distract me but it's worth a try during a short drive at first. I do hope people doing audio books are not monotone (or monotonous?). I have had enough of those at school. Heheh.

well, i think i'm in the opposite side... i prefer to listen to music while studying, working or whatever i'm doing...but the volume of the music should a bit low during my study time only... in terms of books; well i would prefer to read the hard copy instead of listening to the audio because i cannot focus on whatever i'm doing if i'm listening to the speaker... Many years ago when I had a boring job of data entry which did not require much thought I enjoyed listening to audio books. For plain old enjoyment I prefer paper books.

I agree. I listen to my ipod in a pinch. Like driving, or house work. I have downloaded some really great books from Audiobooks.com. They have a decent membership. But, I will always love *the book*. Nothing can compare. Thank you whiteheather39. Thank you for sharing.

I never listen to audio books. I'm a fast reader and I don't have the patience to listen to someone read. Also, I have my own idea about what characters sound like in a novel, and the reader's voice would get in the way of that. I don't even listen to audio files on the internet if I can find a transcript, and it has to be something I'm really interested in for me to do that.

Wow, that is great. I do the same thing. Although, I can get around the narrators voice. I have a very, very visual imagination. I have a world created that is all encompassing. That is where not watching the movie version of the book comes in. But, I can still visualize pretty good with an audio. Especially if I am laying down and can't sleep. I think that comes from listening to audio books since I was about 6 years old. I have always enjoyed them. Keep enjoying your books!! Thank you for sharing!

hi dee! i haven't tried audio books, i actually never have considered listening to one. i've always been into reading, the old fashion style of enjoying a good book. but i think audio books are beneficial for busy people who doesn't have the time to sit down and be idle for hours while reading a book. i think i could use something like that too. i've been busy these past few weeks and i still haven't finished the book i've started last month. ^__^;; even though i can't wait to finish it, i just can't because a lot of things have been occupying my mind, my time. but i think there aren't too many audio books available here that's why its not that popular here. welcome to myLot dee.

Thank you for the welcome secretbear, You know Ifyou have a Hastings or a movie rental place a lotof times they rent books out. I don't remember where you are but our library has a ton of them. From the good old fashion Moby D*ck classics to the new releases. It's worth a look. It might help you relax a little. I know how hard it is to pick up a book when your mind is totally preoccupied. HAve a geat weekend. Thanks for sharing.

I feel that books on tape are great. I have listened to several with my Husband! But it should never replace reading. I honestly believe that everyone should know how to read. I feel terrible when I have heard that someone can't read.. I am not a avid reader, never have been But I can read. And I do enjoy reading things of interest to me. It is a whole new world for those that couldn't read then have learned they are so excited and want to tell the whole world that they have learn! Because they can read everything... and that IS very Exciting!

I agree. My brother in law couldn't read in the 70's when he graduated high school. I was a very sad thing. My sister helped him learn how and now he enjoys it. I can not imagine going through life until you are almost 20 and not being able to enjoy a book. I don't know now that feels, but i imagine it would be horrible. Now, he was very embarassed. He made sure all his children were able to read. To think he graduated high school not knowing how to read, that floors me. Reading IS very exciting. Thank you for sharing. I would encourage everyone to join their local literacy program.

well, i think i'm in the opposite side! as i prefer to read the book itself instead of listening to the audio version.. because, i cannot focus on whatever i'm doing while listening to another speaker! i would rather stop what i'm doing and get my ears clear to listen ;p so, i prefer to listen to music on a low volume while i'm studying...but i would turn the volume loud while driving, cleaning or whatever i'm doing except during my study time... I could never listen to a book while I am studying. I would be very distracted. I liked low music for that too. It really depends on my activity as to whether I can listen to something or not. Thank you so much!!! Turn up that music and Jam...
