Does age matter at the White House?

At 72, McCain would be the oldest ever sworn in as a first term president. Sen. John McCain to release all his medical records to the public, not just journalists. McCain campaign officials told us this was a double standard, reminding us that Sen. Barack Obama released only a one-page summary, basically stating he was in excellent health.
American Airline pilots Boeing and Exxon execs are required to step down at age 65. What do you think?

You have a good point.
I never thought about that.
If he becomes president after 4 years he be 76 and that is quite old. I don't know how that would play out.

The minimum age for the President is 35, but there is no realistic maximum age. However, a letter from a POW who vowed not to vote for Bush expressed concerns that the hardships of being a POW have reduced the life expectancy of most of his fellow POWs. According to him, McCain's age is, therefore, a problem – especially if one considers that this might make Palin President.
Conclusion: I do not think the age of of a President matters. The health of the President, however, is of concern as is the wisdom of the Vice President who might succeed the President in office.

Hi! I think the question should be if he's healthy enough to lead the country. Age is not anymore an indicator of physical and mental health. If he has the wisdom and the experience which he developed with his age, then that would be good for the country. With his old age, though, comes weakening of the body, so the concern should be whether the Vice President would be good enough support and replacement later on. Just something to think about. I am not a US citizen so I'm not eligible to vote here in the States. Interesting topic because the elections in the US will definitely have global effects. Happy myLotting!

Yes I think it is an issue and I think that he should make way for young people who can lead the way to the future. At 72 he is part of the past not part of the future. He cannot guarantee that he will be there for the whole term and as for Regan being 72 when he left it was a pity he did not leave earlier.

I would prefer someone younger than a 72 year old in office. I am not saying that 70 year olds do not have enough energy to contribute towards society. However I would prefer someone younger, more energetic to achieve the goals and dreams of his or her party.

Age should not matter. If he is healthy and comes from a long lived family, then it is fine with me. So if they do have a step down age, who do you want, someone with life long experience or someone who wants babies who survive an abortion to die? It depends on your priorities. I would rather have McCain as president even though he might die in office. And that is no reason to elect Obama.

I do not think that age should be in the equation when determining whether or not someone is capable of doing a certain job, any job. My main concern about McCain's age and being elected is that if he were to die in office Palin would be in charge of the country.

Not necessarily. As long as he is fit physically and mentally I think age is not a factor. It is Ok as long as he is not ruling from a bed.

Well, he is old and dusty, but that's not going to be the thing that changes votes, probably, but it is at least interesting. What comes with age? Is it true that he will definately be more tired? I know that there is a lot of stress when you're president. I would think that a younger body would be able to handle the stress more easily. But he decided to run, so I guess he doesn't think so. I don't think age is an advantage for him besides the fact that people might assume he has elderly wisdom. I would vote for a six year old if he had the right policies and would actually do the job.
