Jack Sprat Could Eat No Fat......

One of the things that I love to see when buying meat is a good marbling of fat. This tells me that the meat has been reared well. However, I am not a fan of eating cooked fat unless it is very well cooked, pork crackling for example. My wife will happily eat fat though. I am the same about other things. I love crunchy peanut butter, she will only eat smooth. Are you a Jack Sprat or his wife? (Gender license is permitted! LOL).

I'm somewhere in between. I will eat a little bit of fat but the problem is that it does a number on my stomach. Also what it does to my weight...

On account I'm an avid Atkins diet follower, I can proudly say I eat the fat. But it's the carbs I steer clear from.

I hate to see alot of fat on meat. I am fat enough LOL. Just kidding. When I buy meat, I like it to be mostly meat that I am eating. It is outragious. My husband likes steaks, pork chops and all with alot of fat. Not me.

Too much fat is very off putting Steph. I mean just a seam running through the meat, nothing excessive. Meat needs a little fat to cook properly but I can't stand then chewing my mouth off trying to eat the stuff.

I don't like to eat fat. Of course, I like my meat rare, so the fat doesn't get cooked too much.

I would have to say that I am Jack . I have a sister who loves to eat the fat from around the edges of a steak, pork chops or roast, whatever. I never could do that. If there is a good marbeling and it is cooked very well, to the point where I cant see it in the meat anymore, I will eat it. Otherwise, forget it. I can taste it, and I don't really like that taste.

I'm more like you. I can eat a little fat if I must, but I'd rather not.

Like I said, I don't like the taste. Not to mention the fact that I don't need to pack any more of that stuff on than I already have.

The only fat I will eat is on bacon or a really crisp fat on a pork chop. Otherwise I will cut off all the fat and give it to my dog. I even but off all the fat on my roast and steaks before cooking them. And I always buy skinless chicken cause I can't stand that either. My husband won't eat the fat either.

I'm no fat eater Becky although I do leave it on when cooking as it adds to the flavour of the meat I find.

I know I should but it just takes to long to pick through the roast after I have cooked it in a Crockpot which I had cut up in 1 inch cubes and added brown gravy to.

I do not like to eat fat on something. It just taste gross to me and I keep thinking in my head that it is the fat off the meat. I always cut mine off and put it to the side of the plate. Then I throw it in the trash after I finish eating the rest of my food.

Hubby and I are the same way...he loves things like ham sandwiches with fat still on it, eggs fried in grease and gravy made out of meat drippings. Not me...I don't eat any of those things. We both like crunchy peanut butter though. Most of the time we eat seperate things at meals b/c I don't eat the same things he does. Sometimes we eat the same things but not very often. We're peas in a pod Littleowl. I brought some double crunchy peanut butter back from holiday. It's super scrummy. I can feel the calories clinging to my waistline and it's going to be hard to shake them off.

I'm definitely a Jack. I hate fat - there's nothing worse than having a glob of gristle in one's mouth ... errk! I was brought up with parents who cut every bit of fat off the meat, but my husband was brought up on a sheep farm and is quite happy with any kind of fat. It's a texture thing - gross. And if you ever buy a Australian meat pie, be prepared to see little tubey things in there somewhere ... probably even hairy bits and toenails ...
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Just as I was thinking warm thoughts towards Australia you have to go and mention tubey bits in meat pies! Yum Yum! NOT. I so agree with you though about the texture thing. Gristle is disgusting. Shudderrrrrr!

I won't be sending any Aus pies to Blighty any time soon, then! It's a bit of a Sweeney Todd type manufacturing process, I feel.

Well i cannot comment on the meat as i am a vegetarian and have been for the last twenty years of so. So i asked my partner this one he says that it doesn't matter to him weather there is fat on his meat or not. But as for peanut butter i like both smooth and crunchy but much prefer crunchy but do not have it that often as i have a two year old son who loves peanut butter and i don't dare risk given him the crunchy one just yet. But my partner hates peanut butter of any description he can not stand the smell of it.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
20 Oct 08
So you don't like his meat and he doesn't like your peanut butter. Sounds a good compromise to me! Good idea to not let your son have it yet. It will be a wonderful treat for when he is older.

Fat is good for us and we need it, so I like fat on my meat, especially if it crispy, like on pork or lamb chops. I love crunchy and smooth peanut butter. I am Jack and his wife!! LOL

I feed a heart patient and have to be very carful about which fats I use. I agree that well marbled meat is more tender and has more flavor. But believe me it doesn't mean the animal has been fed well. Grass fed meat is the best and is good for the animal. It usually means leaner meat. Marbled meat means fat and that comes from corn fed animals.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
20 Oct 08
I agree with you about grass fed meat. That gets marbled too and that is what I mean. I'm not even sure that you can even get corn fed beef here! That suggests that the animal had been reared indoors. That happens to veal here. But not older cattle. I shall have to find out. You're right! They are reared outdoors on a higher percentage of barley feed. They are still free to range but they will naturally come to the easy food, just like us!! Thanks for that Savypat.

I like to see a nice marbling of fat too, it adds a lot of flavor while cooking. With societys influence to reduce fat in our diets, there is more an more extra lean meat (especially beef) and the markets, and if you ask me, a lot of flavor is lost. This leanness isn't necessarily an indication that the critter wasn't reared well. Some of the lean meat isn't beef, but actually cow. Her fat went to milk production, so the meat is naturally leaner. While I like meat with marbling, I also think I eat a pretty balanced diet, liking plenty of fruit and veggies, as well as chicken and fish. My husband is a beef eater...and anything else high in fat content. I have to struggle to sneak healthy things into his food. For example: I use a lot of ground turkey in recipes calling for beef - he can't tell the difference.

My view is that if we ate healthily then the fat in meat etc isn't such a problem. Trouble is that we've become a society of grazers, existing the wrong things most of the time and the right things some of the time! I used to do something similar to my daughter when she wouldn't eat certain foods. LOL.

Although i don't like taking fat, i agree fat in any meat goes a long way to show how good the animal vas reared. when i was little i take fat filled meat, but when i started getting the effect on my skin i had to pause. If fat is in a meat i will but because it is a well breed animal.
