Miss Reynolds said: "An investigation highlighted that bags were being kept in an unprotected external part of the store despite management knowing about on-going rodent activity outside."
Tesco Stores Limited pleaded guilty to selling unfit food and was fined £8,000 with £8,000 prosecution costs.
The court heard Tesco management were previously advised by health officials to stop storing "pest-vulnerable foods" outside.
I read this on the daily mail online. I think that big supermarkets should be more concerned about health and safety issues.

That is absolutely disgusting. You'd think they would have enough brains to double check that the food wasn't gnawed by rodents before handing it to a customer.
The stores don't care about hygiene. All they care about is the bottom line. If they can make more profit by storing food outside or in unsanitary conditions they will.

yuckk... that is really so dirty and disgusting... how can a giant supermarket like tesco sell those kind of stuffs to the customers??? it is unbelievable... nowadays, businesses only care about their profits and never think about their customers... it is so sad... hopefully they will learn their lesson by being fined... take care and have a nice day...

It sounds like they are behind the times, I sure hope they wake up and get more safety and sanitary conscious. Our local stores quit taking recyclables a long long time ago because of the pest problems. I think they need to look at storage as well. Ours seem to be doing okay.

That's so gross.. Imagine sharing a birthday cake with rats?? lol =D Who will ever dare to eat that.. ANd rats are known to be very dirty and they spread diseases.. Just fining them 8000 pounds is too light.. What the authorities should do, is to close down that store for good.. MAke them learn..
PLus, it's not the 1st time they are doing it, when they have been advised b4.. Thus, a fine is too light for them..

It's good Tesco was fined. In Australia the authorities are starting to get really serious about hygiene standards in restaurants and food outlets. They are publishing lists of offending premises and inspecting them to make sure they've sorted the problems. I even heard the other night they were trying to bring in a law where the inspection results would have to be displayed on the door so customers could see. I'm sure that would be an excellent idea, and all food outlets would dramatically improve their habits!

i think that's really sorry...:( and really a very very disgusting news... they should make sure that all of their goods are safe and fit for human consumption. Instead of thinking how big profits they cn get, they should think that what they are selling is clean and healthy..look, now they are paying and spending more because their focus is on their profit..

That's why a lot of restaurants who want to be known for cleanliness have kitchens open to the dining room. It was a big thing in the late 70's early 80's.

for sure! thats so dangerous. they should get a few cats also. back in history, people were known to keep cats in their bakery and proudly let them be seen so people would know their were no rodents in their bakery.

That is horrible selling something that rats had chewed on. I would be so upset for my child. Yes, I agree with you and the cleanliness of stores and how they store foods should always be a major concern.

Hi ronaldinu,
Its the bad and lazy employees fault, Tesco should fired the lot of them and hire people that would do the job properley, thank goodness, where we are the managers are quite strict.

Hi ronaldinu! I think that is totally apalling! How could
they do that? Why would they want to endanger the lives
of anyone, especially children? How could they knowing
sell something that they know for sure has been touched
by rats who can be carrying all sorts of diseases, one
possible disease being rabies which can kill or worse!
I don't understand why they were only given a small slap
on the wrist fine for this! I don't know why the weren't
totally put out of business for this practice! I just
don't understand the laws sometimes and how cruel people
can be! All in the name of making money! How do they
look themselves in the mirror and justify such haneous
acts? Punishment to me would be making them eat the
product themselves!!!

Hi there ronaldinu
You wouldn't expect such a simple error from a big supermarket like Tesco now would you? My mum works for Tesco and says that they are strict about their policies that they have but I think she is talking from an employees point of view!!
