Does eating spicy food help you to lose weight?

I don't know if this is true. I read on a website that eating spicy food raises the body's temperature, so it helps to burn off more fat, even when you are asleep, than if you don't eat spicy food.
I know that drinking green tea, and some herbal teas, increases the rate at which the body uses up calories, and this can help in weight loss. I had not thought about eating hot spicy food to keep weight down.
Have you ever tried eating more spicy food to lose weight, or do you know if it has any effect?

Yes spicy foods that are not too high in fat should help you lose weight because they increase your metabolism. They heat up your body which requires you to burn more calories.

I have also heard others say that eating cold foods and drinking ice water speeds metabolism, but again, it is not really enough to make you lose weight, just because your body uses calories to warm it up.

Yes I can see it could be effective if you add spices to low fat nutritional food, rather than just eating more spicy food.

You dont want to drink cold drinks with anything with fat as it will turn the fat solid and thus harder to pass through system so stays on your body! Have a cup of hot tea with dinner, especially if eating anything fatty to help it stay non solid and pass through the system.
As for spicy food its true but its the spicy not the food part. So if you eat something lean with hot sauce like a piece of chicken with rice then it will help. If you eat a spicy beef burrito then no. I add hot sauce when I have a late night snack of baked potato with just the hot sauce and it satisfies my cravings as well as I usually notice I have burned more off during my sleep than if I didnt eat it! I am not a big spicy food fan but I have one sauce I bought at a restaurant in Puerto Rico I love and I try and use it on my lean meat or fish at least 2 times a week and the baked potato at least 1-2 times a week as well and it definitely keeps like 5lbs off me. I notice that some veggies and fruit take my stomach longer to digest so if I snack on them at night I dont seem to burn them off.
Get a dog if you dont have one so you are forced to walk 3-5 times a day!

Hi Paid2write, as for me it increases my appetite & I enjoy the food more with the enhanced aroma & taste. But I do notice some people tend to sweat a lot after taken spicy food and also drink more water.
I think with the sweating some calories are lost & the amount of water consumed during the meal, one would certainly feel full much faster than anticipated. And excessive intake of food is prevented.
However during the hot season like my place over here and combine with spicy food, I have not come across anyone who has loss weight practicing this.
Not many people could tolerate spicy food anyway and would most people try this? That would be very interesting to find out.
Cheers,

That is a good explanation. I was surprised to see this recommended as a way to keep weight off. I don't think it is something many people would try.
I like some spice in my food but not to take it to extremes so I would sweat all the time, and it would be important to keep drinking water to replace the loss!

Thank you for for the compliment. I would have done the same - enjoy the food and not for the sake of thinking it will help in losing some of my weight.
Cheers,

There is and doubt ever will be a simple formula for loosing weight exept the reversal of the one that put it there in the first place.
i.e
eat too much food compared to your energy output and your body will store the excess as fat.
Eat too little food compared to your energy output and you will lose weight.
It is honestly that simple. No magic foods, powders or tricks.
Sorry this post is rather blunt and to the point but the subject of dieting and losing weight has been plagued by the smoke and mirror brigade for so long.
Its time we each looked at our own individual lifestyles and hard as it is to accept, we have to change what we are doing to ourselves..
Yours Adrian

I dont know if that is true.I dont like spicy foods so i really dont know.I guess the best way to loose weight is to eat healthy.have a balance diet.Eat more fruits and vegetables.Drink a lot of water of fruit juices.Exercise too will help in lowering down our weight.Besides eating too much of spicy foods might do something detrimental to our bodies. So i guess i will just exercise and eat a balance meal than resorting to eating spicy foods.
HAve a nice day!

I agree with you that is the best way. Even if you are not trying to lose weight a well balanced diet is rquired. I try only to eat natural food and I use herbs and spices in preparing my food.

me too. i have no idea if this one is true. but i don't want to eat spicy food any more though i really loved it before. one thing i hate with the spicy food is my body had odor when it perpire so i now i have really avoided it successfully. i t was difficult for me to stop eating spicy foods. guess i had enough of spicy food now. that i can stay from it. during the time i eat a lot of it, i smell bad after after eating eat. my sweat smell bad because of those spicy food. i tihnk or believe that those ingreadients like the onions and the chillies are responsible for the smell of the body during perspiration and even when we are not perspiring. i just want to smell great always that is why i have avoided it already.

No,I don't think so. Eating lots of spicy food can do more harm than good. In fact,it can cause heart problems to be more specific as i have experienced it.

I know that food containing a lot of salt, animal fat and oil will be harmful to the heart. Spice should be used in place of those bad ingredients, not in addition to them.

However my weight increase continuously and seems no trend of decreasing.

Eating flavorful foods tends to make us want to eat more. Some "experts' suggest taking these things in a capsule, but there is nothing that seems to really back it up. It may have a placebo effect. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables that have a high fiber content are really a better choice. It is propaganda to say these things make you lose weight.

I have also read that on several sources. HOwever, if it does 'burn calories' then it would be only a few and I can't imagine it would be enough to show weight loss. Losing weight is still a matter of burning more caloreis than one eats. If I take a bite of a candy bar and then a bite of a jalepeno pepper and do this all day long, I would still gain weight. The spicy pepper's effect on my metabolism could in no way keep up with the calories of the candy bar!

This is the first time I have heard of it. I don't like spicy foods but my husband really like it. Even though he sweats a lot, he still continue eating spicy food. I do exercise and eat less rice. And at the evening I don't eat much. I heard that lack of sleep makes you fatter and lots of sleep makes you lose weight. That's why I try to have enough sleep and have exercise. It is good for the health.

I heard that too from a friend of mine once told me to eat spicy food to lose some weight but i dont believe it for i have a uncle who is overweight and he always had a spicy food during meal time. He dont lose weight until now. I guess exercise and balance diet is the best way to lose wieght without any side effect than taking diet pills. Do it in natural way.

Maybe it is a myth that has been passed around. I agree the best way is to eat sensibly, with a well balanced diet and regular exercise. I make my own low fat meals, and I only use a little spice to replace unhealthy ingredients.

When I was much younger, my appetite was extremely poor. My parents slowly introduced spicy food to my meals and slowly I began to accept eating chilli and more spicy stuff. I started to eat more food and my appetite grew because the spiciness in the food makes you eat more.
Well, I am not a professional and not trying to give you any wrong ideas here, but I don't think it will work. Why not go out and exercise and lose weight the healthy and natural way?

I think spicy food speeds up your metabolism and like most things it depends on how you do it. If you eat a spicy curry which is laden in fat then that will do more harm than good!

Hi, haven't heard this, but if it works, then it's great! I simply love eating, and keeping the fat away, but I'll need something else that will continue to keep the fats away, when I'm no longer working. As I love spicy food, this is definitely good news, if it works!
