I was at the grocery store the other day in the meat department. I saw several packages of meat that was marked reduced. The meat was marked reduced for quick sales. I have bought reduced meat before. When I do I usually cook it that day. Do you buy meats that have been marked down for quick sales?

I used to work in a grocery store and the reason meat will be marked down other than a regular sale is because of a couple of reasons. One is they have too much product and need to sell it by the allowable date or they will have to throw it away. Now there is nothing wrong with the meat, they just need to move it. The reduced price helps it to move faster. Second, they may not have too much product but there are items on the shelf that the date will be expiring soon(like the next day) and they have to sell so they reduce it. This can be an advantage for the customer and there is nothing wrong with the meat as they cannot sell it past the original pull date on the package. I have purchased many times the marked down meat and only once had a problem with the quality. You are right though, you have to cook it that day or freeze it. There are different pull dates for different kinds of meat. Like hamburger usually only has a 1 day shelf life where poultry is much longer. I have found some real bargins and right now in we could all use a bargin.

You are correct ryzach. I did compliance scanning for an out side company in a grocery chain. They sometimes get large shipments for promotions that are featured in the newspaper.

i always try to buy reduced meats as much as i can when i go grocery shopping... it saves me money and i know that there is nothing wrong with the meat at all... usually, they stil have 2 days for me to cook it and i can always put them in the freezer if i don't cook it straight away to make the meat last longer... take care and have a nice day...

Usually they do quick sales because their expirty date is near. I would be wary when it comes to meat products. If I plan to use it during that week yes I would buy meat at reduced price. If not I would not bother. © ronaldinu 2008

i actually look out for them when i'm doing grocery shopping. i don't mind reduced meat as long as i cook it on the same day. why should i pay more just to keep the meat in my freezer? as long as the meat looks okay and is not discoloured i'm fine with it. it's good to be able to save on anything anytime. cheers

Hi Chevee, We go to our local butcher where they get fresh meat every morning and during late afternoon their meat is reduce because they have to sell everything the same day and the meat is so lovely, we buy bulk and put them in the freezer. Hugs. Tamara

My husband is the manager in the meat department at our grocery store. It is fine to buy the meat that is reduced for quick sale and freeze it too. I buy it all the time. It just means that they ground or cut it the day before, not that day. It will still be good if you cook it that night or the next day. I have found if I go to the grocery store early in the morning, I will be able to get lots of the meats reduced. When I do this, I buy a bunch and throw them in the freezer. Saves a ton of money.

On Friday mornings, the grocery I go to, will mark meats "managers special" and mark them down usually half price - they usually only do it on beef, but that is what we like so it works great for us. I always check the "sell by" date, and it is usually by the following monday - I am assuming they are trying to get the "old" meats sold and have fresher meats for the weekend shoppers. They will do it again on Tuesday, and I figure they do it to get "rid" of the meats left from teh weekend and be ready for new meats for the next week's sale that starts on Thrusdays. But I always check the meats very well, dates, colors, juices and such to make sure it is still good meat. I then take it home and freeze it immediately. I seperate it into meal amounts and wrap it carefully to protect from freezer burn and my meat budget is very low!

Oh absolutely, I love finding things on sale. I can't afford to pay the high prices for meat so usually just buy chicken and hamburger. I was at WalMart the other day and they had a real nice package of country style ribs that started out at something like $8.50, marked down once to $7-something, and I ended up getting it for just over $4. They sure tasted good, more so because of what I saved.

Shelly buys those packages whenever she can. She will go to the store thinking chicken for dinner and then come home saying it's pork chops instead because she found a great deal

I have a habit of looking for quick sale meat when I go to the store because I love bargains, as long as the meat is ok to eat, which it is. We usually cook our meat the same day or just stick it in the freezer for a few days. I'm going to the store tomorrow, hopefully Winn dixie will have some quick sale meat.

Hi chevee, Yes I have bought meat that has been reduced for quick sales. But I am very careful to make sure that it looks like it is ok and that I will definitely be able to cook it that same day as you said. I have done this on occasion if I feel that the meat looks like it is not messed up or has been laying out for too long a time. I do worry a bit but I have never had a problem with any of the meat that I have bought that has been reduced. I like to save money any way that I can so that is very important to me.

If I do buy reduced, then yes, I cook it right away. I always check to make sure that it does not look like its molded or unsafe. I have seen them put it out when its terribly discolored and you have to approach this with caution.

I do this when I find the reduced meat sales. I either cook it or freeze right away when I get home. It is just fine to do that if you use or freeze it, and you can get some good meat prices that way! In this day and age every little bit of savings helps at the grocery store for sure!

I always buy the meats that have been marked down for quick sales. Some of it is still good enough to freeze for a few days, if you don't need it right away. It is the cheapest way to buy meat considering that everything is so expensive these days.

We are on a tight budget and I try to find ways to save money any way possible. Not only to I purchase reduced meat, but I actively look for reduced tags when I go shopping. That is the only way I can afford to purchase pricier cuts of meat. Otherwise it is just too expensive. I have never had a problem with any reduced meat I have purchased. I always cook it or freeze it that day. I also inspect the meat carefully before purchasing to find out why it may have been reduced. If it has to do with a best before date that is today or in the next couple of days, no problem. If the meat is a rather unhealthy-looking colour, I leave it alone.
