My daughter was in a halloween costume contest today and won! She was so excited! I really think that she won because we made her costume rather than her wearing a store bought one. She was a piece of pizza. It turned out very cute. We made it out of a big box, just cut it in the shape of a slice, painted it red for the sauce, shredded paper for the cheese and cut out mushroom and pepperoni that we glued on. It was so easy, yet, she was the hit of the party. The other winners were a cowboy (homemade outfit) and an elephant which was a baby. Do you like the homemade costumes better than the store bought ones? What are some of your favorite costumes?

Congratulations first of all to you and your daughter. I remember last year, I saw this costume over the internet and it was an Ipod. It was also homemade but it looked really cool. It was a big ipod and you have real earphones connected to your ears. I think homemade costumes are good especially if you are really creative.

oh i bet she was adorable! how did you come up with the idea of being a slice of pizza? i love seeing the homemade costumes! my sister always does a homemade costume for my niece who just turned 6 this year. the best one was a last year when she was a little witch! the only store bought piece was the witchy hat in a deep purple with ribbons of purple and pink..which my niece loved..so the costume was designed around it. i dont think she was in any contests though, bummer cause i bet she would have won! there were a couple years when i was a kid that we tried to do homemade costumes instead..but the only costume i ever remember coming out of such a venture was the "beatnik" lol! all black and a beret! tadaa! course i bet nobody knows what a beatnik is anymore do they?

Hepburn as a beatnik - Hepburn and Astaire
aah that would explain it! beatniks were the sub-culture ppl who frequented the first little coffee houses and listened to free form poetry on open mic night and jazz..they pretty much wore black, or black and white stripes and lots of berets lol!..Hepburn did a movie and she was dressed like a beatnik..i cant remember the title though, i think she was in france. i believe the era for beatniks was in the late 50's early 60's?

I don't really know how I came up with a pizza. First we were going to do a round pizza, but then when we cut it out, it would have been really hard for my daughter to use her hands, so then we decided on a piece of pizza. Probably because I have 3 boys who work in a pizza parlor and that is our favorite food:) BTW..I have no idea what a beatnik is either.

congratulations for your daughter... being a pizza is so cute... i can imagine she will be the centre of attraction during the contest... anyway, i never celebrate halloween when i am still a child because it is not a big thing in my country and we don't really celebrate it... so i don't have any halloween costume story to tell... take care and have a nice day...

We went to a costume birthday party for one of my daughters little friends recently. There I saw a creative costume that I really liked. A little girl came dressed as static cling. She wore a pair of sweats with some socks and other laundered items safety pinned to her. My daughter has had store bought costumes that are cute as well. I like both, but really enjoy the homemade ones too.

Congratulations to your daughter, I am sure she looked adorable. I do like homemade better then any other kind of costume, and I will do that for my own children. I think that the cowboy outfit was a good idea, and the elephant was also cute but I would probably have an indian and a cowboy, a fairy princess (like rapunzel) and other characters from story tales but personalized to mine and our children's liking. Again congrats.

Thanks. Yes the cowboy outfit was cute. It seemed easy too. I like the idea of having a cowboy and an indian if you have two kids.

That's a great news. Congratulations for a job well done. you know it feels great especially that you created the costume and not ready made from stores. your effort was rewarded. When I was younger my mom sew me clothes and create stuffs for me. She was a crafty one and I am always proud of her especially when other people appreciate her creations. I am a crafty person too, I always like handmade/homemade better and I make my dog a Halloween costume too. It's a pumpkin style.

congrats to your daughter that is so cool. I do like making my kids comstumes but if it doesn't go as planned I get mad and it ends up taking longer then it should. This year I made them into spiders which was pretty easy but the legs kept coming apart where they were connected to move when she lifted up her arms. I finally used fishing line and had to sew it really well for it to stay. I hope it does stay all night. Next year I told hubby that I will buy their costume and maybe add stuff to make it look better but will not do anything from scrath. Then again this year and last year I did have to make them 2 costumes. This year it was b/c we are going to disney and they needed princess costumes for when we go to Cinderellas castle for dinner and then their halloween costumes b/c i didn't want to get their dresses messed up before we get to disney.

Thanks, I think that homemade costumes are so cute. Last night we were at a party and someone dressed their little girl as a tub of popcorn! It was soooo cute and definitely deserved to win and she did.

Congrats to your little girl! I bet she was excited to win. I like homemade ones best. One year when my son was little I made him into a California Raisin by using a garbage bag.....I gathered it up inside so he was wrinkled...painted his face black and he carried a box of Raisin Bran with him....he also won first place at a Halloween party!

I think homemade costumes are the best. It shows who has creativity and imagination. My grandmother sewed a pilgrim costume for me one Halloween. I loved it to pieces. I was the hit of the neighborhood trick or treating that year. I think on the Regis and Kelly show, they were showing pictures of costimes that parents had made for their children. There was one of a baby dressed as a whoopir cushion. Now that was very creative. I laughed until my sides hurt! DCMerkle

I saw a whoopie cushion costume at the store. I bet the homemade version was much cuter! I love watching Regis and Kelly when they have the costumes on.

That is so cool good job. I am not a big fan of halloween but I always make sure my grandson has a costume to wear. but he is 11 now and he always wants those scary ugly monster faces lol . This is where having a girl is cool dress them up in cool things like a piece of pizza jacob would not wear that. But I am glad your daughter won.

My daughter would love to wear those gory masks too, but I veto them. She will never dress real girly. I wanted her to be a hula girl, but we finally agreed on the piece of pizza. My boys use to dress with a mask every year. I think that they are dangerous.

I agree the only good thing is I always go with him while he is trick or treating so that is better. And I get lucky he gets hot and usually wants it off have way and switches to a different one lol. I hope he out grows Halloween soon.

I always made my kids halloween costumes. This year my neice dressed up as a fly swatter. We cut a piece of cardboard and striped it with painters tape, cut out a hole in the middle for her to stick her head through and painted her some antennas on the box. We did buy a pair of wings at the dollar tree for her but other than that it was all homemade. She won most original with it so she was happy!

a big congratulations to your daughter...to you as well for making the costume for her. i wouldn't be surprised if she won it. a personalized costume is way better than the ones bought at the market. it has more personal touch and you know what you really want...you have a costume different from the others too

We always try to come up with some homemade costume. Last year she was a tree. She went to a costume party, but my sister was the judge and she didn't want to play favorites. After the contest, many parents came up and told her that she should have won. She was beat by a clown.

Congratulations on your Daughter winning the contest. She one because you took the time and effort to make it. It was different. My Daughters always won the costume contest, because I always made them. Once my daughter was 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe' in a book character or book contest. I made a cardboard wardrobe, put a witches hat on her and drew a witch face on her. Then I put a small fluffy Lion on the wardrobe. It is really pleasing when they win, as making the costume was hard work. I think a good character or object is important also.

i think homemade costumes are always better then store bought because you get to make it exactly how you want it. sometimes you cant find a costume at the store that you really want so its good when people have the time and they know someone that can make them a costume. once my mom made my sister a costume for daycare and she won a contest as well. she won a basket with a bunch of Halloween candy she was so happy.
