well,,i dont know about other countries,,
but in india it is usaully taught to children that they have to respect and have to take their orders of elders.
if a child rejects the orders of elders(like if a child rejects to bring a galss of water for the elder one ),then he is thought to be disrespecting elders,
i dont understand one thing,,from where does the idea of respecting others on the basis of age comes,
either you respect all,,or you respect those whom you feel have more knowledge in specific field???
i really dont understand this concept of elder-younger???
thanks

respect.. respect to others should be in our heart and soul...let it be elder or younger doesnt matters.. it is not required to show everytime respect to elders specially.. it depends up on the situation i think....

Well, Im not sure exactly Where it came from, nor does it really matter. Respect is respect, regardless of age. We should respect everyone, so it doesnt matter who started this or where it came from.

well,,
the meaning of respect i m talking about is,
for example:- if a child is sitting on a chair,,and someone elder comes,,then child have to leave his seat for the elder one,,otherwise he would be tagged as having bad etiquette.

they teach wrong things too,
secondly,,i m not talking about very old persons,,
i m talking about respecting on the basis of age,,
why would a 10 yrs old child have to bring glass of water for a 20 yrs old,,
what sort of respect is this??

i dont get it either.. because there are some elders that are just cruel and ignorant people.. i refuse to bend backwards or take abuse because of some ones age or status!! i think people should earn respect

for me, it is just etiquette... we have to respect elders i think it comes from God... He gives us a command in one of the ten commandments to respect our father and mother so that we will be blessed and have a long life... and i think this applies to elders as well and not only our parents... take care and have a nice day...

HI FRIENDS
Well every one has to respect other persons.in India it is taught that we have to
respect elders from the very young age.it is an intregal part of Indian culture.
respecting elders ,shows how well mannered a person is.we should have respect for
all the people not only elders.give respect and take respect.
Elders are houses of knowledge and they are very much experienced in life. They teach us everything. We treat them as our teachers,so we respect them.

I was taught as a child that you ALWAYS respect your elders. We all respect our mothers and grandmothers and whether we think about it or not.... if we disrespect our elders it is just like disrespecting our parents.
I raise my kids to say yes maa'am and no ma'am... therefore as they grow up the respect will be instilled in them.

yes respect your elders and respect all people but the line of respect has to start and end somewere and why not let it start at a place of honor with your elders they say you have to give respect to get it but with elders you have to give it first and then you will get it because they have already gone down the path that you have gone down and if you take the respect away then you left with nothing at all

I think it's important that children pay attention to their elders because they are often looking out for their own safety. But, as for the average adult respecting elders, I don't know where that comes from. In some cultures, the elders used to be extremely important for helping migratory tribes find food and for other knowledge essential for survival.
But, I don't think that the mere fact that a person is older that they should be respected more than anyone else. Some elderly people are horrible and abusive and deserve no respect at all.

We should respect our elders we should never make fun of someone because they are older. we should respect our elders, because our parents give birth to us and they are the first god for us and i also think we never make fun of someone elder because they are GOD and soft mind. we should give fun for them and also entertainment.
Thank You

Our elders have successfully made it through life to this point. If they have all their ducks in a row, show them at least some respect. The elderly have served society for some time, it is time to take care of them.
(I do not believe in obedience without question, but I believe in respect.)

hi
Yes, you are right we should respect others so that we are also be respected. And it shouldn't based on any parameter.
But when it comes to elders, it implies respect as well as etiquette. You can think it's a kind of extending your help more in case of an elder.
If disobey to bring a glass of water for an elder person, it implies you aren't behaving properly.
But if the elder person is an old person, in that case it's your moral duty to help him/her.
This is what i understand.

If respect to others then only they will respect to you. Give respect and take respect. Respect to elders is the very good manners. Because they experienced in life than us and they know so many things than us. It is not the concept of elders and youngers. Respect to all who ever comes in your daily life. I think the respect comes from our foreparents. Happy myLotting.

Hi friend, i think it is right that we respect the elders, not only in india but in many countries we have been taught to respect the elders. Of course if an elder ask you to do wrong things, you have the right not to accept. I guess we have been taught to respect the elders because they are older and they have more experience in the things more than us. Thats my humble opinion. have fun lotting!
