Why don't teachers teach?

At the school i used to go to, the teachers don't even teach. They just say:"Get out your maths book and continue on from where you're up to", or "turn to page 47 of your english workbook and work on from there". If there is a question that you don't know and you ask for help they just tell you to check in the answers. This annoys me a lot so i told the principle and now we had to have a class talk for ideas. The teachers are just so pathetic and lame here.
What are the primary school teachers like in your place

you learn by doing things. If your looking at a problem and try to figure it out then its wrong, you can go back and see, think about it and try again, you learn from your mistakes,if you dont know then ask the teacher, they are there basiclly to help you and watch over the classes..Long time ago someone said, kids are going to school,so now its that way.

There probably are several reasons (i am not saying that they are good reasons)..
1) Timetable - teachers are given a timetable a tight one an illogical one at times where the teacher is expected to cover X amount of material in X amount of time
2) Simply NOT PREPARED - teachers are humans to... the probably didn't do their OWN homework!
3) BORED - these are the type of teachers that need to get a change in career.
---------------------------------
and lastly perhaps that teacher (teachers) simply does not have any idea how to teach the selected chapter... how to make it clear to his/her students.
Just some ideas...

Of course teachers teach. It's sad when you get a really sucky teacher. But most of the teachers I've had are decent or outstanding. Maybe when you go to college you'll find better teachers. I guess sometimes when the pay's really low, teachers aren't motivated to teach as well as they should.

I ended up getting held back in a grade once because I had no idea how to do some math problems. The teacher didn't explain them. She just set the paper down on our desk and told us to have them done before class ended. I asked for help and she said "you should remember this stuff from last year". Well I could barely remember anything at all from before. I had been through trauma and it was like my memory had just shut a lot of things out. I didn't know how to explain to her though.
I think the teachers for get exactly what their title "teacher" means. They think it means baby sitter. To them the parent is suppose to do it all. Well, the parent should be involved in their child learning but the teachers are the ones who are certified. I do all I can with helping my daughters but I am at a loss on some things.

I'm disappointed with most of the teachers in school. I can't affirm that they are just not irresponsible as they always read the book for us without stop for a whole
class. you know it's a liitle tired,hehee!
They can't activize your interest with the contents at all but to repeated the stale konwledge again and again for years without any creative and innovative ideas. It's really boring.

Teachers here are very busy. They have to prepare for tomorrow's teaching every night. On the class, they keep speaking till class is over. School is very strict to teachers. And students have a very high frequency of examination. If student's average score is low, teachers would be blamed. So they have to do as much as they can.If one need their help, they will explain in detail to him as possible as they can. Many people have criticezed the edycation system in China, saying they deprive students' ability of independent thinking and creativerty.I think you would know why...

my teachers in primary school are great... they teach me in a very very good way... they never just ask me to open up my text books and learn by myself... they always explain to me and make sure that i understand... that's what i can remember about my primary school teachers... take care and have a nice day...

hi pokemaniac!
well i did have some good teachers and some not so good ones. but yeah, i also had to study on my own what i want to learn because i think that the instructions are lacking.
so most of what i know are from self study. and i think that it should be for all of us us.
thanks and take care!
God bless you! :-)

In my place some of the teachers are like that too. They are too lazy to teach, so they just ordered the students to open a book and then do the exercises from the page. During my school time the teachers were like that but fortunately they know how to regulate the way their teach. One day they will teach but the next day they will give exercises. That was the way of their teaching back then.
Now my brother is in college and he said the lecturer does the same thing. He teaches in one day and gives exercises in class the next day. But my brother said it is not wrong to do it that way, because it is included in the syllibus. But my brother said if the students ask questions the lecturer must teach and discuss about the answers.

it seems that most teachers here go to another extreme. they explain almost everything to their students and they talk and talk in class so that students have no time to think about and practise what they have learned. i think teachers' teaching method should be different when they teach different students. they can ask college students to learn by themselves and inspire them from time to time but that is not a proper teaching method for primary students.

That's too much... Is this true? Teachers should teach and not just to instruct the students then leave... unless it was already discussed prior to that class... can't comment much unless i know more about them... share us more stories...

Well. I'm sorry that you have experienced such in your school. I am a teacher and I teach the small kids. It's obvious that to be a pre-school teacher, one doesn't tell the little kids to get their books and read them while the teacher sits and do her thing. This is not the case in my part. I am busy all the time teaching the children and assisting them with their works.
Well, teachers are not all the same. Many teachers do their jobs efficiently. Many teachers teach their students well and do what a teacher is supposed to do in school. I have heard a lot about how teachers of today work. I hope many teachers will read about this discussion and react. Better still I hope those who aren't doing their job well will be enlightened.
Thanks for telling the truth..

Some teachers are not like them. Some have with the same attitude as your taecher have but that was wrong. Usually that kind of teacher we called it lazy are most in public school becaused I have that observed when my first born was studying still in public school. They became lazy for the reasons we don't even know why, in a way, they have good salaries and benifits unlike in private school. But in private you are required to teach students in their own expensed or else when the student complain against you probasbly you get fired.
