many teenagers now does not like reading but instead keep themselves busy on playing online games and video games or sometimes just love chatting strangers on the internet. and most of the adults knows the importance of reading and its benefit. would you force your son or daughter to read? or would you just let them do their staff? im a gadget girl but im also a book lover. i shop books and gadgets at the same time. so my mom does not have any problem with me, it flows so natural. but if my kid does not show any interest of reading and losing his/her mind to games and all those alike, i would freak out. i dont have any kid but if i would... i want him/her to have the benefit of reading.

I think we should not force her to read, instead try to help her cultivate the good habit of reading. In fact I strongly against those parents who buy their children computers. Internaional world is much interesting than what's on their book, of course. So, buy them book, instead of computer when they are young. And never let them tough your own computer.

you didnt mention how old your daughter was. why not get her books on tape? my now 15 year old daughter absolutely hated to read and she started off reading the chicken soup series and now she loves to read, she reads every night and we go to the library at least every other week.

i will inject some appetizer on liking reading. I don't want to have a kid that does not how to read in the future. To have a kid that seems not interested in reading, is very embarrasing on my part. I will do everything for them to value reading process. I once a kid before and my parents has a good kind of discipline to us. It's not by forcing the kid to read. But finding his/her weaknesses and strength.

for me, i don't like to push people to the things that they don't like, i just let the person do his thing that he/she enjoys. if i have a daughter or a son, i will not force them to read if they don't what to read, but instead, i will do something that they will enjoy. but i'll make sure that the things that they do will not affect their studies.

You can force her to read, but you will get nothing out of it. She will just learn to hate it even more. Try to make her read books she might enjoy. take trips to the library and then she might try to read something that interests her. books that are made into movies are good. Harry Potter or Twilgiht. Well good luck.

of course i won't let my children to lose their mind just in the technology thing and forget the importance to read... books are the source of knowledge and it is very important that young children are being encouraged to develop the good habit of reading since they are very young... take care and have a nice day...

You can entice them to read by giving them a book which will fascinate them. But you cannot force anyone to do anything. If you try... they will only pretend to read... and go back to their games as soon as you turn your back. This is unhealthy... as you teach them to be deceptive. You know what they said... You can lead a horse to the water... But you cannot force it to drink...

Out of 4 kids, I have only one that just never got into reading. Still from the time they were very young, I always brought them to the library, I read to them and I read quite a lot myself. This one child just never grasped the passion for it. No, I did not force her. To force something like this would do nothing but perhaps turn the child off permanently from the interest. I did NOT allow internet or video games or even TV to replace the books. She is 22 now and is a very creative person in many ways. Reading just wasn't her thing. She also is not an internet addict...does not play video games and none of us watch tv hardly ever. I agree that reading is great but I think each child should be exposed to all sorts of things to stimulate their creativity and thinking. TV, internet etc...those sorts of things should be limited and supervised. They entertain the kids and if overdone, the kids don't have a clue as to how to entertain themselves...they get bored. Reading is just one of many boredome busters for kids. There is sewing, crafts, cooking, nature, music, writing, sports...on and on.

What we need to do about is while their still young we should not expose to them to modern technology yet. I read in the magazine that before your child turns 7 he/she should not exposed to it or they won't bother studying anymore. The computer should a tool for studying not for playing games. So the key is, we, the parents should teach or train them well while they're still young.

Force them to read,no.i think with the teens they want action and they want it now which they get playing those games, they don't want to wait turning pages "until" something happens.I used to read all the time until i turned 30 or so then stopped for some reason and didn't pick up a book or novel until reciently and now i'm 58 and feel like reading again.i'd take them to a bookstore and let them brouse around their sure to find something they like.

Forcing the matter will likely backfire. It might also be worth finding out if some else underlines the reluctance to read - such as dyslexia. Finally are you sure the games are the brain-rot you put them out to be? Many games require a lot of thought to solve. A different set of skills I agree, but a useful set. School will force a degree of reading on your kids. Finally some games might even encourage your kids to read more (when I was young I read The Hobbit after playing the game on the C64;))

Well, I think most of the kids now-a-days have trouble reading. There are more things they could do and have fun with than reading. Unlike us before when we do entertain ourselves with reading, it's really different now, they have all sorts of games online, and they have other ways to entertain themselves. Everything I guess is affected by technology. Some don't even books anymore, they prefer .pdfs or using their gadgets (which I found very unnecessary since the experience is different ~ but that's another topic). Anyhow, aside from reading, they're also not moving anymore, many kids are either fat, obese or going to that path. The price of technology, tsk tsk tsk.. So, if ever my kid doesn't want to read. I think I too would freak out as you will. But there's nothing we can do about it, maybe it's how we start their foundation. If we try to motivate them when they're younger by reading bedtime stories, then perhaps we could avoid their 'laziness' of reading when they're older. It's really difficult to change habits, you can't force a child or a teenager to do something they're not accustomed to. You can't torture them. The best way would be to start right. That's it I guess. =)

migenkc Istarted when my children were toddlers teaching them to read and love to read, I read to them, I gave them readers by the time my son was in school he loved to read, and was ahead of his class. I would instil the love of reading into a child very early so he or she would have no problem reading at all, and would love to read a book. once you learn to love reading you never get over it, you want to keepon finding new worlds and enjoying yourself.

I dont have kids yet, and I hated reading when I was little, but if I ever have children I wouldn't necessarily force he or she to read, but I would teach my child the importance of reading and I would definitely incarage my kid to read and now days they have all sorts of fun products to help children to read, and they make it fun for kids to read, with products like V-teck and other grate products and books I wish they had those kinds of things when I was little because like I said I hated reading or anything that had to do with words and I wouldn't want any children I might have to feel the same as I did, I want them to enjoy reading and writing and to learn as much as possible.

In my own opinion, a certain person should not really be forced to do something that he/she doesn`t wanna do. Simply because you really can`t force anybody to do what they don`t wanna do. It`s his/her choice... just try put yourself in their shoes, surely you wouldn`t also want the idea right? Just let them do whatever they wanna for as long as they`re not hurting or harming anybody. It`s what interest them so be it. Let me also emphasize that everyone of us has our own interest. What interest you may not interest me at all... Reading is indeed very important. It enhances our knowledge and let us be more aware of everythings that`s happening. But be it as it may be. You may not know that those who maybe giving much time for other stuffs than reading may be more than aware and knowledgeable about everything... Just my two cents!
