I Was Infected...

Well, I’ve had a very busy couple of days. It seems that I clicked on a link on MyLot to go to a site (not a news site) and somehow a virus got through to my PC. All of a sudden, I started having a lot of problems with my PC and tried everything I could to get rid of it but it just hung on for dear life. I run Avast and it’s usually pretty good about catching these things but this one just snuck through.
I finally decided that reformatting was my only option. I had to move all of my files to Hubby’s PC, wipe it clean and re-install everything. It’s a lot of work and a pain in the butt to do. I finally got most of it done…I just have to re-install my EverQuest 1 game but that’s an overnight download.
I’d like to encourage everyone to be extra careful in not only opening links but also in posting them. I know no one wants to lose their PC to a virus. I’m not positive what site it was but I’m fairly certain…I clicked a link to a name matching site and it was shortly after that everything started going nuts. I’d just like to warn everyone to be careful and keep your anti-virus programs running.
Have you ever been hit with a virus? How bad was the damage? How did you get rid of it? Do you know where you got it?

yes it is awful, I don't know how I get them but then the anti viruses don't catch everything. I just lost my hard drive in October and had to get a new one, I lost a lot of stuff too.

I would have been devastated if I'd lost everything...I have stuff on here that I can't replace...I really need to buy some DVD disks the first of the month and burn it to them.

A word to the wise for sure! It is so easy to get infected. That is what crashed my pc. It is a pain to have to try to clean a computer system. I hope to get a new computer soon and one of the first things I will do is make sure I have a clean copy of the operating system even before I start to use it. And back up stuff often. I keep trying to tell my husband to back up his laptop but he hasn't so far.

HI Twoey: Ugh that sucks! Thankfully I've never been infected though via emails
many nasty things have tried, I run Norton Systemworks, in fact its still an old
version of 2006 I've not had money to buy any new ones but it still does its job
but I really hope to be able to invest in a new Norton Systemworks 2009 , I hope
you get it all back up and running smoothly! just what you didn't need right?

This was a virus that popped up and started scanning your pc. Then it would tell you that your pc was infected and you needed to download a special cleaner to get rid of the viruses it found. As soon as you download the cleaner your toast. I told Hubby and he said to just keep closing it out but then I kept getting other problems and some of my programs quit working so I finally decided to reformat.

Yeah, this has happened ot me but I was downloading songs and movies and my computer started crashing warning popping up saying I had a worm and 8 viruses attacking all at once and my AVG tried at the time to get it but it seemed to have attacked that first the worm..because it disabled it. and wouldn't even start kept saying error error that I needed to uninstall and reinstall I tried that and then it would even install cause the worm I was told..well I tried all that I knew to try even tried reformatting but the worm destroyed the computer I took it to a professional and was advised to junk it and get a new one cause it was useless since the worm damaged alot of it. Now it is very rare that I download anything unless I have to like updating software and such.

Yes we had the same thing happen and like you, ours had to be reformatted etc and we were not impressed. Neither my partner or I had the knowledge to skills to do it for ourselves but had to pay someone to do it, and the bill left us even less impressed. That was the first time and our comoputer was out of action for some time as we had to take it to another town since there was nobody here who could do it in our small town. The second time was just as bad although we were able to get the virus removal tool from Norton - at a cost naturally. That time we had only upgraded our Norton 2 weeks before but the darned virus still got through.
What annoys me more than anything is that the people who write/create most of these viruses are talented people. How else would they be able to create these viruses if they had no talent but instead of putting their skills to good use, they waste those skills on criminal activities.
We were usually pretty vigilent about our anti-virus program before but after those 2 experiences, now the first thing we do when we connect to the internet is make sure that the anti-virus program is current and updated.

Yes, I have had viruses due to my grandchildren and the gaming sites they go to. The first time I worked for days getting it all out. The second time It was so bad that my computer froze up. I couldn't do a thing. I took it to a friend of mine that works on computers it took him 2 days of constant work and my computer had to be reformated. Of course everything was saved and cleaned for my use when my computer came back up. As you say everything had to be put back into my computer which took me a couple of days after I got it back and him putting what programs he knew I ran on the thing.
He works on computers all of the time. That's what he does now as he is retired from the Air Force. He told me that most of the computers he gets has to be reformated because of people going to game sites. I'm real careful and only go to two different ones for my games. But my grandsons want to go to all of the ones the kids use these days. I can't remember the names of them and also the code cheats and info about the games for the them to exel in the games games. I don't allow my grandchildren to go to these things and they wer not suppose to. They took liberties when I wasn't in the room.
Now they are only allowed to get on my computer when I am in the room and only the games that I go to. I have Gamehouse and Shockwave that I use and have never had a problem with the games there.

No, I'm very careful. We have "No Script" installed on Firefox. Plus we keep up-to-date Anti-virus. There was a time a while back where we had the same problem. The virus infected the computer & we had to reinstall everything. That's so annoying! I didn't realize that any of the links could have come from myLot. Too bad about that.

Ooooo, nasty! I have both a Mac and a PC, but mostly use the Mac. I let my friend use my PC but have cautioned her not to download anything without checking with me first. I was using the PC yesterday and it seemed fine, so far. XX

I haven't had a virus or any breach since I downloaded ZoneAlarm firewall, Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware and a couple other things. People say it's overkill but I never get any trouble while they get nasties every so often.

Don't feel bad...I run Avast, we also have a Norton's disc we run when there's a problem, I have Spybot and Adaware as well. This is the first virus in two years that I've gotten...knock on wood. It may be overkill but I have too much on my pc to lose it all.

I'm sorry to hear that. I got a virus not too long ago also. I have Norton Antivirus and it detected it. Norton put it in quarantine for me. I'm not sure where it came from.

Don't you just hate that. I try to keep my anti-virus and spyware programs updated, but the evil ones just seem to keep outsmarting them. What is EverQuest 1. I love playing games but haven't heard of that one.
Hugs

I am sorry to hear that. I have not had a virus for years as Norton usually keeps me clean. I hope it continues to do so. I try not to put links in posts but I would not know how to make sure that the link had no viruses attached.
If I had been to the link and found nothing wrong and posted a link and then someone put a virus on the site you would not know. It seems strange though that the poster did not notice the site had a virus.

Hi twoey..I have McAfee anti virus and at the moment it gives me a warning sign everytime I come on here I have read the reports and one of them states that there is a cookie called tribalfusion.com yet all reports are good reports apart from bad shopping experience here (which I have never heard of!) and lots of pop ups apart from that there are minor annoyances so in all Mylot is a safe site but you are right we do have to be careful when opening links, my opinion is that it is the links that do get posted on here that could be the problem, but obviously the person sending it wouldn't know.
My only real bad experience was with the trojan Mal Warrior it destroyed my laptop and when I had it removed just the other week I had someone look at it cos it was playing up. and the shop hadn't removed Mal Warrior it was hidden deep in the hard drive so much for the people I took the laptop to they didn't know what they were doing....hugs littleowl

I'm a little bit worried when I read this topic because I also have a little problem with my computer now. It keeps hang many times in a day which delayed my work online. I don't know what's happening. I don't see it has a virus because hubby said, my computer is not easily infected with virus. I am using Mac by apple with fire fox browser. But it is an old version. It works fine sometimes, but lately, it drives me nuts. Keeps on hanging, and I keep on quitting the program. I hope this is not a warning for virus infection.javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$cphMainContent$lbStart','')
