i also calculate mentally like you do.a tip for all suppose you have to multiply any number by 11.
example:53 x 11
5 _ 3 (add 5 and 3,and put 8 in the blank space.the answer is 581).
example:58 x 11
5 - 8 (add 5 and 8,the total comes 13,put 3 in the blank space and carry over 1 and add to 5,the answer is 638.)

Thanks a lot for the tip. Many of us have learnt to mentally calculate but I have seen a lot of students just grabbing the calculator for any kind of calculations. They have got addicted to this form of calculations and never try to solve any problems mentally. I think it is a good habit of calculating mentally.

I do a little of both. My kids used to be upset when I would not let them use a calculator for homework even if their teachers said that they could. I thought that it was a stupid thing to do. How will they learn?

I mentally calculate. In school we were not allowed to have calculators, unlike students that are actually suppose to have them in certain grades now. I can calculate it in my head quicker than on a calculator. So I don't have much use for one. About the only time I may use one is when I have a whole string of numbers to add like 30 or forty. But most times I don't use one for this either. I guess I might be weird and not like others that may mostly use them. lol

We too were not allowed to have calculators in school and neither were my kids allowed to use them. But my daughter was never able to do mental calculations and always reaches out for the calculator. On the other hand my son is faster in mental calculations!

We didn't have calculators when I was in school back in the stone age.
If I'm doing something simple, I won't use one, but for most things I will. If I write a check I'll usually just do it in my head for the one entry, but if I have several entries to catch up on, I always use the calculator. Either way, I always check it every few days online and have the calculator handy while doing that.

I try as much as possible using mental calculations or pen and paper rather than using the calculator. I believe in keeping the mind active because the brain can lose its ability if not much stimulus is given to it. I have seen youngsters unable to perform simple calculations without reaching for the calculator. I do not want the same thing to happen to me.
all the best,
rosdimy

We have to use our brains and keep ourselves active. My daughter is not able to manage without a calculator. She has got too used to using a calculator even for simple calculations. On the other hand my son is faster with mental calculations than with a calculator.

i am not great intelligent in Maths.
But i never use calculator for doing simple calculations & also for other counting purposes which are in 100's..
but if i need to count plenty of 1000's, then i usually go to Start -- run -- calc -- enter
and start doing my calculations in system itself..
Actually, I totally forgot about the real calculator nowadays as i always use mobile and system calculator.
But a Good invention..
& nice days those are.. when i was used to spend plenty of hours in calculator, checking whether the calculator is giving the right answer, in my childhood days!

I have never tried the calculations on the PC which many do. Neither do I use the mobile to calculate. I find it very complicated. I have a calculator in my drawer both in the office and at home which I sometimes use. In school we were never allowed to use the calculator but today I find a lot of kids using it.

Mentally calculating is one of those things you can only keep doing right and fast if you keep practicing it, in my opinion. That's why I try to calculate without a calculater as much as possible. For the bigger numbers I use a calculator, for taxes, etc. For watching my earnings and expenses I use a speadsheet in excell which shows me exactly what I have left end of the month. I like to use a spreadsheet for the cause because it gives me more insight into the upcoming expenses so I can calculate ahead.

Using a spreadsheet gives us a clear picture of the earnings and expenses. I would also use a spreadsheet when I had income from different sources. Now it is just my fulltime job and mylot so I do not use a spreadsheet anymore. I too use a calculator for bigger numbers but for everyday I try mental calculations.

Most of the time I will calculate figures mentally. It all comes down to the complexity of the equation though and I will also use the calculator on my phone to double check my mental figures sometimes. When I was in school, we weren't even allowed to use them most of the time! It was only in my later years that they were introduced but I didn't study the math areas that allowed them.

I can do mental math for easy MDAS, but there are cases that I will really need a calculator like when I deal with scientific notations, logarithms, trigonometric problems and any computation that needs a scientific calculator. I always bring it with me specially in class.
Good day!

Even I don't like to use calculator while studying, but, now I grown and started a business, I do even the silly calculations with the calculator, coz, we are more thinking of business and other things, so, we automatically searching for the calculator for small calculations also....

Yes Mayka this is indeed a sad state of affairs. When we were in school we were never allowed to use the calculator with the result that we developed good skill in mental calculation of figures. But today's generation are encouraged to use the calculators at a young age(to speed up their home work),with the result that they are unable to calculate even small figutres mentally.....

in our school days,we were not allowed to use a calculator but nowadays i find that as soon as kids start finish learning their numbers, they are told to use calculators which, according to me doesnot sharpen their mental faculty.the simple 1+1 question, makes the kids to hurry to get their calculators.

I tend to do it all in my head, whether it's sales tax, tip, discounts, whatever. It's just faster for me. I don't even use a calculator if there's too much to calculate in my head - I'll write it down. I have used a calculator to see if I'm right, if I'm not sure, but mainly I just rely on knowing math.

I usually do mental calculations, and most of the times, when I go out, I usually take my son or daughter or at times both of them, and I ask them too to calculate for them to practice their Math. It's a nice practice for the kids and me, and we do have fun doing it.. :)
