I was using Windows XP on my system and then I got hit with a trojan that wouldn't let me backup or copy files and I couldn't get rid of it.
I realized I was going to have to wipe my system so I decided to move up from XP to Vista. Well Vista sucks big time on my computer.
I only have 2GB of ram and that just doesn't seem to be enough ram for my ole computer and now everything runs so so slow.
My system is about 5 years old and only has DDR ram. They only manufactured 1 GB modules for DDR ram and I only have two slots so I am limited to just 2GB.
I am thinking about replacing my motherboard to a newer board so I can install DDR2 ram and have at least 6GBs.
I can't even browse a web page, play a video from Youtube and try to day anything because my system will slow so much it will stop the video and who likes listening to music that stops for a break every few seconds.
So my problems comes from a lack of RAM. A problem I can only fix by replacing the motherboard.

Well, you've had some practical advice already, but I was a bit surprised by the question. A computer is not mich more than a clever adding machine. It relies on adding and subtracting binary numbers held in its random access memory. The more discrete tasks you ask it to do at the same time, the fewer resources, including time it has to devote to each task, so the longer each one takes. of course it will run slower if more proigrams are open at the same time!
How much slower depends on how much RAM it has to work with, how fast the motherboard can transfer data between the various processing units and howmuch memory is devoted to the graphics card. Another significant factor is the memory load devoted to programs that are running in the background, inclouding the operating system itself.
When the RAM is fully allocated, portions of the running programs get switched from RAM to the hard drive, a portion of which is reserved to act as short-term storage. The fuller the disk and the slower the RAM, the more obvious the slowing.
Cleaning out the hard drive and defragmenting should be done regularly (I use Ashampoo Magic Defrag, which keeps the drive defragged in idle periods as you work); emptying the Recycle Bin is important, too, as this takes up a significant part of your drive.
Adding extra RAM is the best single thing you can do to improve performance: updating the operating system is probably the worst (if you use a Windows or Mac OS, every new version requires more and faster hardware); however, if you move to a Linux OS, you will find a very impressive improvement in speed, but you will have a bit of a learning curve - the latest versions like Ubuntu are quite easy to get the hang of though.
A larger, faster hard drive is often a good option, but no mater how big, they all fill up before too long!

hi first thing i want to know which operating system u r using vista or xp
means if u have vista then u need more ram for proper working .
some tips : -
1. disable windows aero for vista only.
2. unselect indexing option.
3. perform disk clean-up.
4. increase virtual memory.
5. use windows basic mode.
6. close, not necessary applications from taskbar.
7. use readyboost function with ur pendrive for vista only.
8. increase ur performance option from control panel in vista only.
9. perform disk defragmentation.
10.use softwares like tune up utilities 2008 or 2009.its is very good software.
11.close ur antivirus at the time of running heavy applications.
If i got something new i will tell u.

if your computer gets slowed down then you should download zonealarm with the free trail of the virus scan and adaware finder. The computer gets slowed down when you download from the internet of get spyware. also you need to see what you computer specs are and see if you need more ram. The Ram is a big deal in those dell and gate way desktops they sale now. Thats why its best to buy a custom made one or barabone kit. There are many reasons why a computer gets slow. if the computer gets really boged i would reformat the computer which is very easy.

I would suggest you to deleted unwanted programmes. If this does not help you to make your computer work faster. i would suggest doing a defragmentation.I hope this helps.

Ya i happens to me also even though i have one of the most powerfull confiqurations and i think that every user has this problem like you and me and this happens also due to multi tasking and people usually say that electronics do not need rest but when you take the case of computers it does need rest as the RAM gets heated up for a long time i.e. for more than 12 hours then it really is difficult to run and the processor and mother board also has the same problem and to run your computer efficiently and fastly do regular check upa and clean your mother board and processor and while cleaning your RAM just rubb it with a eraser and it would work fastly--try it out--it really does work...

Dear friend,
I do have experienced this slow down in the many years before and after I downloaded a software from internet Ccleaner the speed has increased as it erases all those not needed materials in computer. Hence I feel there are also other softwares in internet that cleans up our computer and increases speed. But at times my internet gets bit slow. But after I do clean all unwanted materials in mater it speed shows an increase. The slow may also occur due to overload too.

Your not the only one, mine slows down to. What you would want to do is upgrade the RAM (as others have said) this will allow it to run faster as it is the memory that the computer uses to run programs. Defragmenting and Scanning for viruses and spyware will all help in allowing your computer to run better

There may be many factors which effect the problem you are facing. If you want your computer more faster than now, you need to check you processor. Some time you may get slow with internet/Applications, if any back end application running on your computer like updates or scanning processes. Its all depending on you and how you planning to execute apps according to your requirements and reliability of the the system.

I'm not having problems with my laptop because I really do everything to keep my disk space free and I guess I chose a laptop with good specs such as the processor, the RAM and all. I don't know with others but Tune Up Utilities really helps me a lot in saving my laptop such as in cleaning the disk space and the registry as well and it also gives me recommendations for me to optimize the speed of my computer. As for saving the disk space, delete the unneeded programs and files. I don't store any music files but instead save it on my iPod to free space. Also try to check the start up programs. Well, I recommend Tune Up Utilities for sure. I'm not promoting or something but based from my experience, it really helps me boost my computer speed. Cheers!

I haven't had any problem with my laptop slowing down. I have always had problems with my PCs slowing down. Since I got my laptop my kids have taken over the PC and it is very, very slow. So slow I don't even want to use it anymore... but I have to for some things. I don't know what those kids have done to slow the computer down but it drives me nuts. I have told them to delete some stuff but I'm not sure that they have. I'll have to go in there myself, delete temp files, defrag, etc. I just don't have the patience to deal with it at all.

Hello jhl. It is the same case with mine if I open some other softwares, especially chatting software. I cannot do other things on the computer if I have a voice chatting with my friends. I know the problem with my computer, which is its being aged and used for seven years. But I don't complain it for its performance because if I don't have a voice chat, it works well. Happy New Year to you, friend.

Hi, My computer slows down whenever i download any kind of software or anything which has more capacity and not only that, if that all there are too many downloads that is when my computer usually slows down. I have good anti virus, but then, anti virus doesnot protect your computer from getting slow. Its very tough to be patient when it slows down when we really want some important work to be done. Earlier i had much problem downloading movies and making my computer slow down. Now, i hardly download any stuff which has more capacity and if at all i do also, i see to it that it is very genuine, because i had to format my system downloading stuff which had virus.

When a computer using after a period of time,it will slow down naturally.because the drive fragements are more and more, the programm is older and older compared to ever-changing virus and invation. So in order to keep your computer run normally, you have to do this things:
1.Upgrade your operaing system often.
2.Upgrade your hardware to use latest programme.
3.Install right againt-virus software and update it often.
4.Clear all temp files and fragements.
5.Leading a good and security habit.
I hope this can help you.

My computer, that i bought couple years ago, now going slow down, and getting worst when i make some internet browsing, may be planning upgrade the memory, or buy a new computer. The other cause could be a virus, or hardware conflicts. You can make some inspection of your computer hardware.
